It appears to me that a lot of people dislike the "Tough Girl" personality in Ashley and Jack

Let me just make this clear. I believe most people can agree that all the female party members of ME1 and ME2 are indeed strong. People generally like strong women. However, that is not what I am talking about here and this is what brings me to my key observation. Whether you like Ashley or Jack yourself, you have to admit that these two characters are easily the two most disliked female characters in the Mass Effect so far. Lets examine the two

Ashley Williams is key example of a "tough girl" personality. She is blunt, aggressive, undisciplined, and not afraid to showcase her prejudices (especially considering her idiotic statements like- "I tell the aliens from the animals"). Many people seem to find these traits of her personality obnoxious and repulsive and therefore do not like her. While I may also not like Ashley, I believe that since Ashley has a generally strong reaction to her, negative or positive , Bioware may have created a very successful character.

Jack, on the other hand, takes the idea of "tough girl" to a whole new extreme. I remember the day she was revealed in a character trailer, people immediately hated her. While the hatred for her character seem to have declined, she is still nonetheless one of the more disliked characters. Why is that? For starters, she is overall an extremely aggressive individual. In fact, in my opinion, she is more manly than a typical krogan! Nonetheless, people overall find this very repulsive and do not like her as well.

So what is my point in all of this? Female characters like these two tend to be very disliked. Maybe their personalities would fit better on male characters? I don't know. Whether you liked these characters or not, why do you believe that there is such a negative reaction to these two individuals? Once again, even if you liked them, you have to admit there is a strong negative reaction to these characters.

Jack is the best ME2 romance, and If I didnt like Ash so much, I would say the best period.

Actually Jack has a pretty big fanbase. I thought she was cool.

Ashley was annoying as hell, in that she was cool until she started ****ing about there being aliens on board.

Jack is a psycho and this is a big turn-off for me, personally.

I didn't really like either. Ashley was ok I guess, but Jack's whole tough girl personality that covers her actual sensitivity that you can bring out in a romance with her was a bit too obvious and boring for me.

I like the fact that I don't love everyone on the team, it adds a sense of realism that not everyone is out to please me. So I like the characters being there, I just don't actually like them if that makes any sense.

I did initially dislike Jack, but that is because I tend to have a problem with wanton violence in general, true that I find it even more unappealing in women.

When I knew about her past though I understood why she behaved the way she did, as for Ashley I never disliked her "toughness" because it was that of a military woman. It was what I expected, I dislike Ashley for what is truly her own faults like her racism and ignorance. She didn't seem like a person who can see the big picture, which explains why she is in the Alliance if you ask me.

Jack may have a big fanbase, but as far as I know before the game came out, she had a very negative reaction. Now, that the game has been released it doesn't suprise that she has acquired a following, but many people still dislike her.

It's Ashley's Xenophobic/Racist attitude I hated.

even that Pressly guy changed his opinion on aliens after working with them so long (see his datapad on the crashed Normandy site) so why didn't Ashley? or maybe she did and just had no time to talk about it in ME 2?

that was the only thing I didn't care for about Ashley- the dislike of aliens. she was a great character otherwise IMO.

Jack is very hard to talk to, especially if you're a femshep or a maleshep not romancing her. doesn't seem like her character wants to be bothered. she's cool, but not approachable in the long run.

I dislike Ashley because I find her semi-animosity towards aliens to be childish and ignorant. But it does make for interesting character development.

I like Jack. But as others have said...the whole "I'm angry violent and psychotic!(but secretly scared and looking for love)" thing was extremely predictable.

it has absolutely nothing to do with tough girl anything.

She wasn't that xenophobic at all.  I mean now you are running around with Cerberus...now THEY are xenophobes.  I mean Ash opposes all the really serious xenophobes like Terra Firma.

I liked both of them. I think the hate is often ignorant. At least in Ash's case, she isn't a racist

Miranda has a rather tough girl personality, albeit it comes off as more "I'm cold and calculating, you would be wise to not cross me" as opposed to "I am woman, hear me roar!". I thought Miranda was a pretty cool character. Likewise as a minor character Gianna Parasini was pretty cool, and I thinks he fit the tough girl bill pretty well.

Well then you should hate Liara...that girl is a nut.
Jack has more of a False sence of Bravodo she just wants to be able to trust someone.
As with every character you have to look deep into them to see who they are.

Jack is more likeable than Ashley because of her deep backstory, but I'm turned off because of the "I'm such a dangerous b****" attitude.

In Ashley's case...she was just a irritating b**** and needed to be fried on Virmire.

And maybe I don't like chicks that can beat me up<_<

Her beliefs are not always the reason why people may dislike her. Her personality can just seem obnoxious to some people.

Jack... was interesting. I haven't done her romance, yet, though.

I initially disliked her. But, as tough as she acts.. she doesn't do much in-game. Oh, she talks a good story, but she's not disruptive, and her back story is really sad. I'm sorry we never get the whole story. Why her? Why was she subject zero?

She strikes me as someone who's looking for people she can trust, and she's just been disappointed over and over.

EDIT: <sigh> And I see that every point I made was made by other people in the time it took me to write this. :(  Well, at least other people agree with me!

I liked them both :S

Ash learned to get along with Aliens and Jack was obviously putting the tough girl image on and you could see deep down she is soft and just needed some good friends around her.

Its true that Bioware did a good job on these characters if they are getting such a strong reaction, Jacob on the other hand... I sware if he didn't turn up in ME3 and none of the other characters mentioned him, no one would notice he was gone.

What I find far more puzzling is that Kaidan and Jacob are so strongly disliked. I mean seriously despised, they are always right at the bottom of any opinion poll. It makes me wonder if good looking guys threaten the male gamers. I didn't think guys were like that so I find it a bit surprising.

Miranda is sophisticated though.  Ashley and Jack are far more raw.  It is like Captain Anderson is tough but not like Grunt and Zaeed are.

I liked Jack.

She was one of my favorite characters in the game.

I originally didn't like her (she came off pretty lame in the trailer for her), but once I actually got her on the normandy and started talking to her she ended up being one of my favorite characters.
