I liked Ashley, she was a soldier plain and simple with a bad family reputation due to an alien attack. So of course she’s not going to be to fond of aliens. Anyone who fought in the First Contact War and especially on Shanxi would likely feel the same. Keep in mind humanity has only been in the same galactic arena with other races for less than 30 years. So her ideals about aliens are likely pretty common. Its not about xenophobia but lack of trusting them. Look at Pressley he had similar opinions but did grow to accept them. Her comments about not being able to tell some aliens from something that belongs in a zoo is an observation. Honestly look at the Elcor, Hanar, and the Keepers and tell me you wouldn’t think that they look like something you would see in a zoo? The Elcor look like some sort of huge tailless sloth, the Hanar a jellyfish that can live out of water and the Keepers look like bugs. Keep in mind that she was also heavily religious.
Jack, I liked as well. She was the troubled youth who had no one to look out for her all her life, no friends or family. She was always abused in some way so she never trusted anyone. No wonder she would hate everyone and lash out as she does. I don’t think her loyalty mission is bad either. She needed to access Cerberus files to find where that lab was since she certainly didn’t know. Going back there to blow it up is her way of closure on that part of her life. As for why the Illusive Man would suggest her as a team member, my money is on he knew about her past at the Cerberus lab. He either wanted her to see how she has grown in biotic power first hand against the Collectors or wanted to try and clean house by making sure she can find that lab knowing she would want to destroy it and anyone who was there. In either case I’m sure she was chosen because she was a powerhouse biotic.
