It appears to me that a lot of people dislike the "Tough Girl" personality in Ashley and Jack

Kaiden... it was similar in ME1. I've played both FemShep and male, and your walking approach to him makes it look like I'm interested as both male and female. I'm not homophobic, but I found that a little uncomfortable. But, other than that, I really liked Kaiden as a character as well. He was solid, bright, and capable. I'd be happy for him to have my back.

What I find far more puzzling is that Kaidan and Jacob are so strongly disliked. I mean seriously despised, they are always right at the bottom of any opinion poll. It makes me wonder if good looking guys threaten the male gamers. I didn't think guys were like that so I find it a bit surprising.
I like Kaidan a lot, its easy to sympathize with the character as your comrade-in-arms, even when he goes a bit emo on you on the collector mission. To me Jacob suffers from the replacement problem, he's the "strong male npc lead" that was needed to replace the role of Kaidan for ME2, and as such his character was uninteresting.

People must stop listening to Ashley after arbitrarily deciding that she's xenophobic. She really isn't. She doesn't stand with Terra Firma and can even be swayed to appreciate the galaxy as a whole by the end of the game.
In fact, she's not xenophobic at all. She's very pragmatic in her thoughts that species will generally and instinctively look after their own, first. If she was in a firefight protecting a human and an alien, but could only save one, she'd save the human. But, I could see her laying down her life to try to save an alien, if necessary.

Must be how you treated her. She doesn't open up much, but a little throughout the game.Big Yam wrote...
Jack is openly hostile to anything my character says. Why bother to associate with people like that?

If there is one example of Xenophobia.
Its CERBERUS AND T.I.M for crying out loud....Theyre human facists ...jeez
I like Ash, she had the right amount of spunk, that it was endearing.
Jack is just f**ked up, even when she opens up to you, she's still a b****h

I think people just get frustrated with their attempts to soften Jack and write her off after that. You have to admit Jack is not an easy person to like, subjectively speaking.

Jack is a psycho. She's barely human. She admits herself that she only trusts her instincts. And that she wants to be safe. Being safe is all well and good, but her idea of safety is being the only living being in the galaxy (when asked about killing she says she figures her survival chances go up each time she kills).
Conclusion: I like Ashley. I don't like Jack.

I don't think she's racist; just ignorant and borderline detrimental, since most of the squad are, in fact, aliens.

Jack is the best ME2 romance, and If I didnt like Ash so much, I would say the best period.
I think she is the best. She has by far the best romance between both games. It has far more depth than any of the other romances, including male and female romances.

No that's just how she is. You just have to understand her personality. She just keeps her gaurd up, you can't blame her considering her history. But she opens up a lot the more you talk to her, especially during the "sex" scene.

No its because Bioware purposely doesnt make them exciting, so they dont overshadow Male Shepard.
Look here- for why Kaidan is pansy

Trust me if there was a good looking human male squad member that was also pretty exciting, then he'd become a favourite

Exactly, hardly an extreme view is it.
The illusive man, 'With this we will achieve human dominance in the galaxy'
This is extreme xenophobia

Oh come now any military man would answer the same way...especially with his superior officer standing right there.
What a guy cannot be laid back and just a good guy? He has to be an over-the-top badass? I didn't realize I was a pansy just because I don't go around fantasizing about fighting everybody.
