Virmire Optional? (Also, forced Ashley romance)

So, I'm doing a second ME1 playthrough (wanted to do things specifically for ME2, plus avoid romance) and I'm doing things in much the same order: Pick up Liara, do Noveria, do Virmire, then Feros, but I've always wondered:

Is Virmire optional? If I don't do that mission, once I pick up Liara, the Cypher, and the location of the Mu Relay, I should have everything I need to stop Saren, right? What reason would I have to not go after the Conduit at that point? So is Virmire skippable? How does it change things if I don't do it?

Also, I -hate- how easy Ashley is to fall into a relationship with. By the time you figure out you've lead her on and she's calling you skipper, you can't shoot her down. Glad I had her sit on the nuke the first time around, because she's going to be doing that again this time too. The xenophobic whiner.

Parts of the vision are hazy and by going to Virmire and picking up the second beacon the vision is cleared up and you point the location from the Mu Relay and that the signal was a distress beacon

I have to admit after playing ME2, ME1 got a lot funner because I knew some of the repercussions of my actions

think the Virire question has been answered.

As far as Ash goes I'd agree that it's difficult to put her off without being a bit of an ass, so I had to choose between her and Liara. Thing is I kinda wanted to like Ash but she seemed a bit Racist/Xenophobic when it came to aliens and as a I lean towards the Paragon side of things I don't really find that attractive.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Virmire is required. Alot happens there, you know....genophage stuff, encounter with Sare, WREX!!!

I always thought that Liara was kinda forced. I know my first playthrough I had in mind that I was romancing Ash. I talked to her and set it all up...but I also talked to Liara. Then I use the Conduit, go to Illos, and bam...in walks Liara. /facepalm. So what I got from that is that if you dont want to romance anyone dont talk to them...or if you do, be careful, if the bring up a relationship just leave if you can. :)

I really can't figured out why everyone treat Ash xenophobic approach as something very unnatural?
If you pay attention at Pressly talk whit Commander right after game start you will saw that Pressly is as same if not bigger xenophobe as Ash. (by thee way his datapad founded on Normandy crash site show that pretty much in first entry.)
And you can change Ash attitude but that will required many paragon talks whit her.
Heck... i got once situation that Liara suggested to let Council become "one whit the eternal force" when Ash takes defensive stance and tells me to save Council and honestly that was really weird situation but show up pretty much that Ashley is not stone writen xenophobe and can be turned on the pro-:alien:alien side of the force.

It's not at all surprising that Ashley and Pressly are somewhat xenophobic. I mean just 35 or so years ago we got in a war with the very first living alien race we met. Then, we settle an area of space and immediatly get in a war with another race who doesn't want us to settle in the area. After being told we were allowed to settle there (by the council), they started slave raiding our settlements.

Also, we FINALLY have a colony that isn't being constantly attacked, and BOOM! It gets attacked and wiped out.

And if you talk to Ashley, she's not xenophobic, she just thought humanity should solve it's own problems itself.

Back on topic, I believe Vermire is needed to get the full vision, telling you to go to Ilos. However, you need to go to Novaria to get the actual location of the Mu Relay (as it got knocked off course by a supernova sometime after the beacons where made).

Don't forget that if you talk to Ashley on the Citadel, she comments about not being able "to tell the aliens from the animals."  That's kinda racist.  If you are romancing her and also talk to Liara very much, Ashley can comment that perhaps you're being friendly with an alien because the brass told Shepard to "make nice with the bug-eyed monsters."  That's also pretty racist.  She's not a human-supremacist or anything.  You can definitely get her to lose most of her xenophobia, but she is still a little racist.

On Topic: The second becon on Vermire is what allows Liara to finally recognize Ilos.

All 4 story planets are important.

Feros gives you the cipher, with which you can actually understand (some parts of) the vision.

Noveria gives you the location of the Mu Relay.

Virmire gives you the complete vision, and the destination: Ilos.

Therum gives you Liara, who can actually make sense of the vision and who recognizes Ilos as the destination.

Without Virmire, you would have no idea that you'd need to go to Ilos, because of the incomplete first vision from Eden Prime. The Mu Relay links to dozens of systems and hundreds of worlds, trying to check them all out would take too much time (as Liara explains ingame after you finish Virmire).
