It was shocking because it was so dumb.A machine race transform protheans into insects...UBER GEEKZILLA wrote...
i though the part when it was revealed that the collectors are protheans was unpredictible
Mass Effect has really a weak main story.
Its good, that the side quests are better.
Mass Effect 1 main story was stellar compared to this.
And the Nassana Dantius story was also a joke.Did i miss some emails??
Why she ordered to kill her workers and who was the one that ordered the assasination??
Total nonsense.

I didn't find it until after the final mission. I don't know why it never occurred to me that I shouldn't have to take an elevator to the crew quarters to take a .....

I went through the suicide mission several times, I lost Jack the first time, and several accident-free attempts later I began losing Mordin. I hate losing people.
I was also surprised that the Collectors are actually twisted Protheans, and discovering the Reaper Larva was also a surprise. Immediately made sense to me though.

The part of Mordin's loyalty mission where they stop and discuss the genophage at the dead female Krogan.
I really thought Mordin and Shepard were going to start swinging at each other. The deeper i got into that conversation, the more i was like O_O

As for a good surprise, I'd say Legions stories about the Geth and the Human Reaper. When I first saw the Human Reaper I was confused. Then it started to make sense as EDI explained, it after thinking about it later I thought it was a good plot twist. I expected the Collectors to must be making more Collectors to attack the Citadel.

I had a few warm fuzzy moments though. Seeing Garrus again was good but the best was the Normandy 2 unveil -- i was expecting it, but I still can't stop grinning every time I play it.

I thought, "Oh, does she know Han Olar... or, ooh, maybe she's a friend of the asari spy and she's out for my blood?"
And then when her eyes rolled back into her head and I realized who the "friend" was, it was one of the few times a game actually made me say "Holy ****" out loud.

I mean there was a clear build up to it, but I still didn't think they would have inter-species sex not involving Asari. I still think it was a bad decision, but whatever.
Also discovering the identity of Archangel and then apparently losing him again a few minutes later.
And discovering what was going on in the Collector base, especially witnessing Kelly's gruesome death.
Oh, and also discovering that they had completely rewritten Liara's character.
I remeber reading speculations about the Prothean/Collector connection in the old forum, so that didn't really come as a surprise to me. If anything it was a bit of a let down, since the Collectors apparently aren't really Protheans, just based on their genome. It would have been a bigger deal if the Collectors were actual descendents of surviving Protheans with their own agenda.

... I was mad pumped when Normandy blasted the Collector ship.
This was my "awesome" moment as well. I never finished ME1 and as such wasn't so emotionally tied to Normandy to fully relate to Joker's disinterest in abandoning. But man, the ship grows on ya, and not just because of EDI. So when I lost the crew to the surprise Collector attack (still suspicious about that potentially connecting to Illusive Man btw), I was ready for blood. But took my time buffing myself up before I entered the Omega relay.
After all the cool sequences that followed I'm ready to somehow "land" on the Collector home ship by having to scuttle a pulverized Normandy. So I had one of those "holy s**t" moments when the upgraded gun blew right the heck through the Collector ship that took down the first Normandy.
I've been around awhile. Kudos to Bioware for being able to tell an awesome story for someone as jaded as me
