The Normandy getting destroyed and Shepard getting killed in the opening minutes of the game. That was pretty surprising to me.

That bathroom door... four plays through and I only just find it looking at the lazarus-hamster.

There were quite a few really shocking moments for me.

But the one that sticks out the most, and not in a good way, was.

The Termireaper  Image IPB

I mean seriously, that was the best they could come up with?

What the fig were they thinking? Image IPB

-EDIT-

I wil have to say though, that when Kelly was turned into Reaper juice, I sat there for about half an hour debating wether to go on and finish the game or start again from scratch and make sure she survived.

On a side not, did anyone else feel slightly guilty that they may have spent a large amount of time killing 'friendly' Geth in ME1?

YES!

There are times in the ME1 storyline where it seemed odd that the Geth would be attacking -- such as at Zho's Hope.  And since Legion refers to the "bad" Geth as Heretics, it's logical to presume that the "Heretics" are the minority -- which means that most Geth you've casually run across in the galaxy are "good" Geth.

The Legion conversations were fairly shocking, but would have been more shocking if I didn't know that you could recruit a Geth into the team -- so I was prepared for some sort of rationalization about how all Geth are not badguys or how this one Geth is different that most.

The Things that WOULD HAVE BEEN Shocking if they weren't spoiled for me by the trailers/ads/publicity:

"Jack" the convict is actually a crazy, tattoo'd *woman*

You don't recruit a Krogan doctor, you end up using his Baby-Frankenstein super soldier.

Garrus on my Team as 'Archangel'.

You can recruit a Geth.

Normandy being destroyed  and Sheperd dieing (#1 thing that WOULD HAVE blown my mind)

The "Most Shocking " thing that happened to me during the game was when the Collectors attacked the Normandy #2 while I (and my entire team) were conveniently off the ship.  I saw the attack coming, but what I didn't see was PLAYING AS JOKER and limping around the ship constantly cussing and trying not to be seen while Collectors killed or collected every member of my crew.  That was absolutely insane and intense, especially knowing that I couldn't kill anything, do anything to stop it, and that I had to depend on an AI that I was fully especting to "Go Hal" on me and betray me later in the story.

One of the pleasant surprises (like seeing Mordin sing) was finding out that the AI didn't "Go Hal" on me, and that the AI actually considered herself a part of the team -- making the ship seem like an real character in the story.

-How true about the previews containing spoilers. It ruined a lot of potential surprises in the game you could have had. Just like movie previews ruin movies. Even the package has a spoiler on the back showing Tali as part of your team.

-I to wasn’t surprised at all that something was about to happen on the Normandy when all 11 of your companions (12 when the new one comes out) and Shepard squeeze into that shuttle like clowns from a circus.

I guess thinking on this a little bit the biggest surprise to me was how the game chose the renegade outcome from ME1 (including killing Wrex) as the default start up way to go. Topped this off was that just because you play as a male Shepard you let Kaidan die or as a female Shepard it was Ashley you chose on Virmire to die. The fact that they have no trust in you anymore just because your working with Cerberus was odd as well. You can even have Garrus with you and not only don’t they acknowledge each other but its still a “your with Cerberus and I’ll never work with them” attitude.

One the shocking moments for me is when Legion told that the geth had quarian memorials.

IMO, it was little things that "suprised" me in ME2, which ME1 utterly lacked.

There is nothing really shocking in ME1

I personally found Garrus' loyalty side quest to be the most moving. The silent patience in hearing the others point of view....mild heartbeats coursing through the audio. To either aid Garrus in a vengeance kill *a sense of loosing himself in revenge and maybe playing a more distant part later in the future* or reminding your companion that there is always a highroad, and that sometimes its best to cast off the shackles of restraint so that we may walk a path of nobility by remembering who we are within the construct of mercy, held with the hand of compassion and guidance....*begins downing the Doritoz and typing away hours of fanfics.*

Watching Kelly get dragged screaming onto the elevator by a collector. Those screams and her desperate flailing-for-her-life thing was so awful when I knew I couldn't do anything about it and just had to keep on walking.

And the Nassana Dantius story was also a joke.Did i miss some emails??
Why she ordered to kill her workers and who was the one that ordered the assasination??
Total nonsense.

Not "total".  In her ME1 storyline she contrives to get Shepard to kill her own sister; she knowingly breaks laws - she's a corrupt individual.  She also says she "has trust issues".  In the two years since ME1 ended, her paranoia has grown to the point she's putting down people left and right.  It's unusual but not completely farfetched.

And Thane said he wasn't hired to kill Dantius; he took it on himself to 'brighten the galaxy' before his death by eliminating one corrupt, violent criminal.

A twist that surprised me only after plaing the game and looking back was Harbinger not being a 'true' baddie in the purist sense of the word. Being controlled by another Reaper certainly makes sense in hind-sight, but I assumed all along he was just some sort of construct used by the Reapers to maintain control. A sort of middle-management bad guy.

Harbinger is a Reaper.  He was using the Collector General as an intermediary in controlling the Collectors.

I would not be surprised if the Collector General was his "generation's" Saren Arcturus - he tried to "save" his people by demonstrating they would be "useful" to the Reapers and was "rewarded" for his efforts by being the only one kept alive/capable while the rest of his race were slaughtered and reduced to drones.

it did seem that when Harbinger 'left' him he reached a claw up as if trying to implore his god not to foresake him...

On a side not, did anyone else feel slightly guilty that they may have spent a large amount of time killing 'friendly' Geth in ME1?

Nope!  Didn't Legion say that 'he' was the only 'mobile platform' beyond the Veil?  I took that to mean that the only Geth anyone has encountered to date have been Heretics.

When I got to play as Joker. Also, when that Collector ship appeared out of nowhere, both me and Joker both said, "Sh*t!" at the exact same time, it was beautiful.

The most shocking: The lackluster ending that makes the game undeserving of a full sequel number since it appears to be little more than a cop-out prelude to ME3. (This is what happens when they don't have enough material to make a true trilogy.)

I know same here. I regretted buying the collectors edition. And some jack**** put the new prothean vision pic so that spoiled the collectors. Frak
