Did you tell the forces about the oil in the shop beforehand? did you get the dwarf to join the battle and get the smith to fix up the forces armor?
The battle is easy, the undead are melee only and die in seconds.

Seriously what the hell is wrong with this game? I get the sense these devs completely lost their mind when it came to difficulty settings. I'm playing normal and yet the game is just stupid in difficulty.
Right now I'm in Redcliff during the nighttime defense against the walking dead and I'm constantly getting swarmed by these guys. It's impossible to survive this fight because no matter what I do inevitably we get overrun. Am I completely missing something? This is just stupid to even try to win this fight right now.
Seriously,
my wife beat this first time on normal with her Elf rogue - and the last time she played a computer game was Diablo 2
you must really be struggling with the game mechanics and maximising the use of all members of your party
I didnt use the oil and killed the dwarf and still beat it
the only hard bit is when you run down to the town sqaure and half the militia are dead already (took me a bit to realise I had to go down there)
my advice use pause more

I beat it only losing the bartender (who was dead when I came down), having Wynne in your party to heal the militia helps, but mass paralysis helps more. If your party members are strong enough you can also have them stand at the spawn points and draw fire away from the militia. If you beat the initial group that's attacking the militia and can keep the militia healed they'll do most of the work.

But not to be a complete ass invest into having a mage with AOE sleep, it will help you greatly.

When you say not a single person can die does that include the militia? I take it that it does but I don't want to assume anything. I can't see that ever happening without cheating though.

Ah! Maybe this is why so many waves came. In the one there were a heap of waves I had Dwynn, the Mayor, Thomas, Lloyd(Barkeep) all in the mix. I kept casting Force Field on the Mayor because he died in all the other battles. When it was all over I noticed Lloyd was the only one dead. I might create a AW and take them, Shale, Morrigan and Alistair through and try to keep everyone alive. Sounds like it might be tough though.

Edit: You actually get two rewards if you do it with the same people you did this time

That said, upgrade everything. Armor, added NPCs, morale, oil, etc.
It's not a melee thing because I went through it on Nightmare with 4 warriors. Taunt is your friend to keep undead off of militia. Better they swing at me than the worthless militia. The free helmet wasn't that good anyway.

also: if you are playing a more logical character then you have no reason to fight there at all. sure you will defend a village against undeads while the castle where you are trying to seek help for your own quest is obviously already overrrun? somehow i doubt it is the smart thing to do

Mind blast, CoC, warcry, etc. is your friend. I had nobody die of the npc's and I didn't even have to heal them. Also keep your party to the sides cause in town the militia will probably block up the middle (making it hard to move and position yourself).

Also having trouble on normal means you're probably playing on PC. Download the respec mod and make Leliana into something useful. [IE NOT AN ARCHER]

Let the militay pelt them with arrows - you keep them busy and away from the milita. Easy-peasy.

Or, you can use the tools given to you and actually complete the game without cheating.Vicious wrote...
From now on, Go to the mage tower first. You get a ton of stat bonuses that make the rest of the game a bit easier.
