I never understood why people have problems with this battle, even on nightmare.

Did you tell the forces about the oil in the shop beforehand? did you get the dwarf to join the battle and get the smith to fix up the forces armor?

The battle is easy, the undead are melee only and die in seconds.

Seriously what the hell is wrong with this game? I get the sense these devs completely lost their mind when it came to difficulty settings. I'm playing normal and yet the game is just stupid in difficulty.

Right now I'm in Redcliff during the nighttime defense against the walking dead and I'm constantly getting swarmed by these guys. It's impossible to survive this fight because no matter what I do inevitably we get overrun. Am I completely missing something? This is just stupid to even try to win this fight right now.

Seriously,

my wife beat this first time on normal with her Elf rogue - and the last time she played a computer game was Diablo 2

you must really be struggling with the game mechanics and maximising the use of all members of your party

I didnt use the oil and killed the dwarf and still beat it

the only hard bit is when you run down to the town sqaure and half the militia are dead already (took me a bit to realise I had to go down there)

my advice use pause more

one time i had one who died and i wanted to complete it with without any casualties to get the helmet so i reloaded a few times to get it right , the fights were easy for the first tries and then on one reload the game seemed to have went crazy i had not a single pause while helping the villagers i kept having waves after waves non stop , i mean in the first tries i had pauses between waves but in that one i had none at all they just kept on coming untill i finally killed the last one , i was like erm something went wrong in there and was completely different than the other tries

I've fought this fight 3 times. First two times, it was a long grinding battle, to the point I thought it was set to end only when my party was nearly dead. But I also found out later that I'd missed things like the Free ale and getting the Amulets to the men, as well as the innkeeper into the fight. Once I got all those, the battle was a cakewalk. the militia held up nearly on their own, the waves seemed far fewer and the fight in general was far shorter.

I rarely have issues with the upper battle but the one near the Chantry is a real mixed bag. Sometimes it's over after I kill 10 or so baddies yet other times I stopped counting at 30 and 4 more waves came. I almost got 2 levels from it though. I have headed to Shale, Warden's Keep then Redcliff after Lothering for every play through so why each time is so different is a mystery to me.

Look at the 1.02 patch notes. There was a bug where some of the NPCs could spawn in unfortunate locations.

I think I recall someone finding a bug with this quest where the corpse that has to die to end the onslaught getting stuck, so waves keep on spawning. But this was a while back and I can't vouch for its veracity. It might help to send a party member down the docks to track down the corpse that has to die to end the encounter.

I beat it only losing the bartender (who was dead when I came down), having Wynne in your party to heal the militia helps, but mass paralysis helps more. If your party members are strong enough you can also have them stand at the spawn points and draw fire away from the militia. If you beat the initial group that's attacking the militia and can keep the militia healed they'll do most of the work.

Just to ****** off the people who can not finish it, there is a special reward for not letting anyone die during the raid. NOT A SINGLE PERSON CAN DIE

But not to be a complete ass invest into having a mage with AOE sleep, it will help you greatly.

Ah! Maybe this is why so many waves came. In the one there were a heap of waves I had Dwynn, the Mayor, Thomas, Lloyd(Barkeep) all in the mix. I kept casting Force Field on the Mayor because he died in all the other battles. When it was all over I noticed Lloyd was the only one dead. I might create a AW and take them, Shale, Morrigan and Alistair through and try to keep everyone alive. Sounds like it might be tough though.
When you say not a single person can die does that include the militia? I take it that it does but I don't want to assume anything. I can't see that ever happening without cheating though.

Edit: You actually get two rewards if you do it with the same people you did this time

Rumor has it that the fights are easier on Hard and Nightmare since the militia scales too.

That said, upgrade everything. Armor, added NPCs, morale, oil, etc.

It's not a melee thing because I went through it on Nightmare with 4 warriors. Taunt is your friend to keep undead off of militia. Better they swing at me than the worthless militia. The free helmet wasn't that good anyway.

i had so much lag when i first played this fight that usually one the undeads came at a time lol. max i saw was groups of 3 of them. but yeah, get those npc's to help and let them take most of the blows if you can't handle it, switch to ranged if needed and if you happen to have a healer mage: don't be afraid to heal your allies either.
also: if you are playing a more logical character then you have no reason to fight there at all. sure you will defend a village against undeads while the castle where you are trying to seek help for your own quest is obviously already overrrun? somehow i doubt it is the smart thing to do :P

Auto attack as soon as they come out? Honestly if you're struggling let redcliffe burn, but this is an easy fight. If you struggle in the beginning then let the knights take the heat. If you struggle in the second part just keep everyone back and focus fire. There's no change up here, it's just mindless auto attacking mobs that don't hit hard.

If you force Lloyd into the battle and he survives, he'll give you a reward. If you make it through the battle without a single NPC dying, you get another reward.

Did this with my pc mage, morrigan, leilanna and Allistair. The trick is mostly kill them quick which gives you time between waves. Fireballing those that come running can also help. But for me the best tactic was focus firing one down at a time, this way they don't add up.

Mind blast, CoC, warcry, etc. is your friend. I had nobody die of the npc's and I didn't even have to heal them. Also keep your party to the sides cause in town the militia will probably block up the middle (making it hard to move and position yourself).

You can actually let some people die and still get the reward (according to the game guide), those people being Dwyn and his two goons.

From now on, Go to the mage tower first. You get a ton of stat bonuses that make the rest of the game a bit easier.

Also having trouble on normal means you're probably playing on PC. Download the respec mod and make Leliana into something useful. [IE NOT AN ARCHER]

CC guys...CC. When you get down position your mage properly forr a Cone of Cold and follow up with Flame blast or that electric arc spell or whatever else. Mind Blast them once the Cone of Cold wears off. Then leave one of your guys outside of hte barricade, so that all new incoming monsters zero-in on him.

Let the militay pelt them with arrows - you keep them busy and away from the milita. Easy-peasy.

Or, you can use the tools given to you and actually complete the game without cheating.

Just a thought.
