i've done playthroughs with both default and a custom.

i think my custom looked more realistic. his face handled the animations better, especially the smile that looks so cheesy on the default guy.

This is childish. This is a matter of taste, you might aswell discuss which colour is the best. Red or blue anyone?

Dont mean to belittle the post, just the people throwing garbage around.

Some like to customice their Shep, other like the look of the default one, that does not equate with having bad taste or bad imagination so shut up abouth that, the people saying it just come off as retarded internet loosers. And by the way ive done both my own designed shep and the default guy, i kinda like the default one though.

I have a default Shep, but I prefer the one I customized myself. He's not a pretty boy (maybe even a bit on the ugly side depending on which angle and lighting the game has on him) or overly macho looking, but he's my Shep. I was all ready to change his face for ME2, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

Why the hate for default Shepard users? I would use a customized Shepard, but:

1. The customization options are weak
2. Even if you're some kind of genius, your character still looks no more unique than the dozens of poorly meshed side characters littered throughout ME 1

If the designer were way way more detailed and could be relied upon to produce things that look at least roughly human rather than fat-chinned Duke Nukems, 14 year old Pokemon players, or balding, stubbled, scarred space jews like 90% of people's custom characters look like, I'd use it. Something as detailed as the DA generator would be fine. My character actually looked like a person in that.

The female Shepard is another matter. Customization options can make the character look just as "real" as the default. I often used customs rather than the default for female Shepard.

I stay as default Shepard every time, I'm never happy with how custom character looks and yet to see one others have made either which I prefer over default.

Default Shep looks terrible ... just another ugly bald space marine. I like my custom way better.

To anyone who says that Mark Vanderloo (Default Shepard) looks more "manly"... you realize you're talking about a male fashion model, right?

In my opinion, anyone who plays with VanderShep is either lazy or just lacks imagination.

Your Shepard does not look better. Saying is guy looks manly does not equate to having sex with the dude. I swear some of you need to grow up.

Says you. I happen to think he fits much better into the universe than Mark Vanderloo.

...and where did I say anything about having sex with anyone? It's kind of odd that you immediately went there. Do you think about sex with Mark Vanderloo often?

Thank God for opinions and choices. If Bioware wanted a middle aged, washed up school teacher. They would have chosen your model.

You were implying that anyone who said the guy looked "manly" is undercover gay. So, I called you out  on it.

I am bald in real life and I didn't like the fact there is no bald model.  I don't want to look like a half bald loser. You either have hair or you don't. There is no point in trying to save it.

Nice. You're one to talk about maturity, typical-annonymous-internet-mud-slinger. I guess it's alright to proclaim "Vanderloo 4 Lyfe" and say how all custom Shepards look like rubber skinned mutant freaks but God forbid anyone say their custom Shepard looks better than the default model or they get put in their place. Spare me, hypocite.

No, I was pointing out that it's odd for people to describe the default Shepard as "manly" when the person who's face he bears is a fashion model in real life. Most people wouldn't consider male fashion models to be hyper-manly space marine material.

You just immediately jumped to the conclussion that I was gay bashing. That seems to me to be a personal problem.

I like the default shep but I want to make my own characters. Though admittedly the face I ended up using for my Femshep in ME1 was just a few adjustments off the default girl face.

I do, I'm never good at creating characters, they always end up looking only slightly different than the default.

My 'serious' Shepard is the default one. As some have said before, that's the guy in BioWare's videos, on the cover of the game and everywhere else. It is Shepard.

My 'for fun' Shepard is a female I've done. But getting everything just right is a pain in the backside. I tried to make her look like my girlfriend (oddly enough, she liked the idea that I would spend my time playing her. Women are crazy I tell you), but I never really succeeded.

With most games I always create my own character, but with ME it's different. The voice just doesn't seem to line-up with any custom face I make or have seen anyone else make. So I always use the default, after all the face was designed around the voice. Another reason is the animations and facial details are way better on the default than any custom I have seen. For those who hate on default users and say "you just lack imagination" i'll say this; Those like me are just doing what feels right. There is a reason people laugh at Mike Tyson's voice, it just doesn't fit.

I just wished they would have added a high-quality default FemShep equal to the default male.

While I like character customization, in this game, no matter how well they are done, the player created Shepards pale in comparison to the new companions faces. Even Grunt looks several times better in quality than player made Shepards.

I don't. I find him kind of generic and boring, and the fact a lot of people seem to use him is more motivation for me to create my own. I enjoy character creation and face editing in games. Using defaults takes away some of that fun, but that's just me.
