This is absolutley a matter of individual choice, personally I love creating my own unique characters regardless of what RPG I'm playing. It took me a while to get used to my Sheppard but having played through ME1 and importing him into ME2 I now have a hard time thinking that voice applies to any character other than the one I created which brings me to my only complaint, I realize that with the amount of voice acting work in the game providing multiple voices to choose from would have been a lot to expect but has anyone ever tried creating a dark skinned Sheppard character with that default voice? needless to say it does sound kind of lame.
My primary Shepard is a dark-skinned African-American (because I said so, that's why) and I can't imagine any other voice for him. Like another poster said, after a while, it just fits.
And while we're talking, am I the only one who thinks male Shepard sounds like Tiger Woods?

I've never seen a custom face that didn't look like it was either a freak of nature or made of plastic. A few posts up is a good attempt, but it still has "that customized" look that all customized Sheps seem to share. It just looks like they're modeled from plasticine.
Sadly I agree that the skin/face for Default Shepard is just so much more detailed, I don't really like the shape of him though haha.

Did you Cheat on Ashley/liara/Mirand/Tali at all?
If so then that might be why...

He certainly acts like Tiger Woods in the sense that he's an intergalactic pimp. OH!
Come on. Nobody can mention good old Woody anymore without expecting a tsunami of THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID-esque jokes.

Interestingly, I noticed people saying that seeing anyone else with his voice would just look wrong. It made me wonder what would happen if one of us were to meet Mike Vanderloo and say "Hey, that's not right! You're voice doesn't match your face!" I also thought I might say the same about the voice actor Mark Meer. The funny thing is, Mark Meer looks alot like Mike Vanderloo, with the exception of the head scar, haircut, and his eyes.

This is the first one I played through ME1 and ME2 with:

And this one goes best with the voice... I tried to make him look like Mark Meer! (the eyes aren't quite right, though):
241.19J.JGW.L11.I6G.1C9.WUQ.1EW.6G5.1W2.447.6

My engineer Shepard was a clever looking black guy (I named him "Keen"):
312.111.G8W.G11.51N.WA1.GW1.1WW.GW9.GN3.847.6

And here's my favorite goofy Shepard (I named him "Dim"):
352.WWG.GG1.121.Q9W.GBW.W1W.41W.PW5.WS6.956.5

Sheploo is boring.

Not quite so with the female, though. I tweaked her looks a little.

I don't like the default female however. She doesn't look tough enough.

My custom Shepard and default Shepard are both bad-asses, I doubt i'll ever make another Shep.

When I play femShep, I make customs. If she had a defined model like Sheploo I would probably use the default.

That smile is really unfair, most smile animations in the game look creepy as hell regardless of your Shepard.

But Sheploo's smile is the creepiest....
