I've never seen a custom face that didn't look like it was either a freak of nature or made of plastic. A few posts up is a good attempt, but it still has "that customized" look that all customized Sheps seem to share. It just looks like they're modeled from plasticine.

This is absolutley a matter of individual choice, personally I love creating my own unique characters regardless of what RPG I'm playing. It took me a while to get used to my Sheppard but having played through ME1 and importing him into ME2 I now have a hard time thinking that voice applies to any character other than the one I created which brings me to my only complaint, I realize that with the amount of voice acting work in the game providing multiple voices to choose from would have been a lot to expect but has anyone ever tried creating a dark skinned Sheppard character with that default voice? needless to say it does sound kind of lame. Image IPB

My primary Shepard is a dark-skinned African-American (because I said so, that's why) and I can't imagine any other voice for him. Like another poster said, after a while, it just fits.

And while we're talking, am I the only one who thinks male Shepard sounds like Tiger Woods?

Sadly I agree that the skin/face for Default Shepard is just so much more detailed, I don't really like the shape of him though haha.

Did you Cheat on Ashley/liara/Mirand/Tali at all?
If so then that might be why...

He certainly acts like Tiger Woods in the sense that he's an intergalactic pimp. OH!

Come on. Nobody can mention good old Woody anymore without expecting a tsunami of THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID-esque jokes.

I always used the default male Shep. I always use a custom character for the female and every other RPG I've ever played that allowed it.  However, with Mass Effect, I feel that although it is an RPG, it is also Shepard's story.  The default Shepard is Bioware's true vision of him, and any other, including the female Shepard, merely represent interesting "what if" alternatives, and not the true story of the character.  I feel Shepard is Bioware's character, not mine.

Interestingly, I noticed people saying that seeing anyone else with his voice would just look wrong.  It made me wonder what would happen if one of us were to meet Mike Vanderloo and say "Hey, that's not right! You're voice doesn't match your face!"  I also thought I might say the same about the voice actor Mark Meer.  The funny thing is, Mark Meer looks alot like Mike Vanderloo, with the exception of the head scar, haircut, and his eyes.

I've played Mass Effect numerous times, and I have NEVER completed a playthrough with default John Shepard. I just don't think he's appealing at all. I've also never done a playthrough with a default Jane Shepard. She looks weird.

I like my custom Shepards more than Sheploo.

This is the first one I played through ME1 and ME2 with:

And this one goes best with the voice... I tried to make him look like Mark Meer! (the eyes aren't quite right, though):

My engineer Shepard was a clever looking black guy (I named him "Keen"):
312.111.G8W.G11.51N.WA1.GW1.1WW.GW9.GN3.847.6
Image IPB

And here's my favorite goofy Shepard (I named him "Dim"):

Image IPB

Sheploo is boring.

Male default definitely looks the best. Always play as him, both in ME1 and ME2. Not to mention Mark Meer's voice fits surprisingly well with the default appearance of male Shepard.

Not quite so with the female, though. I tweaked her looks a little.

I haven't yet seen a more natural and handsome male face on these forums than the default face. Yes, I want him to be handsome: I'm going to look at his face through the whole game. And the default face is just my idea of handsome.

I don't like the default female however. She doesn't look tough enough.

Actually, my own Shepard looks very good and the voice suits him perfectly. He has become a iconic figure to me, because i've had the same Shepard since ME1 was released. (soldier class) However, i've completed ME1 seven times and ME2 twice with this character, and i've given him a rest for now. So instead at the moment, i'm using the default Shepard and hes a Adept, and I got to say hes very very cool.

My custom Shepard and default Shepard are both bad-asses, I doubt i'll ever make another Shep.

I play default male Shepard, but I change his background etc. to Spacer/War Hero and go full-out Paragon.

When I play femShep, I make customs. If she had a defined model like Sheploo I would probably use the default.

Default femshep is bleh. I've played default male shep once-I enjoyed the playthrough and thought the face fitted well. I might do it again, but I've imported and tweaked a great face atm. So yeah.

Custom on first ME and ME2 playthroughs, but default for some others. My custom will be the first file on my ME3 with no arguments. Don't get me wrong, default shep rules (mostly because of the commercials/trailers) but my custom is clean, mean, hardcore space marine.

Oorah.

I think Ugly Shepard's smile is more...creepier.
