Within about 5 minutes of gameplay, I came to realize that this game was designed around what the OP calls "power gamers". It is rather obvious that you will miss portions of the game, and certainly struggle throughout the game, unless you read the wiki, forums, etc.



That said, I am enjoying the game. I'm okay with a game having a learning curve, and allowing experienced players to create more "efficient builds", etc. I agree with the OP, however, in that the imbalance issue can be quite extreme.

I shouldn't really post, because this is a dumb thread, but as a long time RPer (original D&D, Rolemaster, many others). The best RP is when you RP to the story, not try and warp the story to your character. This is a bad, bad thing to do in pnp, where your job is to contribute to a co-reality and gripping tale with the other participants. This is diluted some in a cRPG, because the DM isn't going to tell you that you are being a d-bag by rolling some lame ass, selfish, disruptive character (in the context of the campaign/game world, in may work in others), and force you to re-roll.



In your case, it seems Duncan was having a brainfart moment when he recruited you, or the peril was so grave (in his eyes) that he just wanted bodies to throw at the joining to see what stuck, hoping you would sharpen up in the forge of battle. A war of end times is no time to be a prissy ponce, turning down the help of others because you don't like them. You character fails, and has probably doomed the world.



In all seriousness though, I think thats the best thing about this game. You have to make uncomfortable decisions, and morality is pretty grey, its not D&D with neat little boxes of alignment.

I must be retarded because I do not use a mage (healer or otherwise) and I am on my fourth playthrough. Morrigan and Wynne stay in camp. After I pick up Sten and Lelianna in Lothering, Morrigan stays in camp. I only use Wynne in the tower and on her personal quest.



I run a party with Alstair (or Sten), Lelianna and Zervan. I usually play a rogue with ranger specialization. At the 14 level I select Ranger for Lelianna and Zervan. I can then run a 7 member party. (4 chracters and three pets). I have all the characters use range weapons. I max out the archery tree, ranger bard and stealth lines for Lelianna. I max out stealth, ranger and assassin for Zervan.



Enemy mages and bosses get attack by the pets who are backed up by a volley of arrows.

My PC maxes out the herbalism line.

The other action I take is to raise the dexterity of all the characters. It makes them much tougher to hit.

No I do not power game. I learned about dexterity while playing some of the old classic crpgs. My characters who had high dexterity were always able to tumble out of or dodge attacks. I simply carried that over to DA:O.

If your character can avoid getting hit your character does not have to worry about drinking potions that often.

Okay, okay, truce. Sheesh.

So... you train all your characters to have a really high dex? That's cool and all but hardly seems fun considering that the monsters still have a huge amount of HP.

But, I wasn't calling you retarded. I meant to say that complaining about it makes you retarded, IMHO. People must live with the choice, in real life or in some game, that they make. Simple as that. It's like the OP decides to bet all of his money on ONE twenty sided die roll and he lost it all and then complains that it "isn't fair". Not exactly, but I'm sure you get my point.

BTW, once you're playing epic level adventures, even with a huge DEX bonus if you aren't mega clad in misc. magic items and armor for Defense you're gonna be taking some damage. But, even you have to admit that playing D&D without a cleric is not a good idea. The average, rounded group of 6 party members would be a wizard/sorcerer, a cleric/druid (cleric is much better than druid IMO) a rogue, a fighter and paladin. The most balanced party their could be. Take out the cleric and at least you have a paladin. Take him away and you've got no healing. One slip up and one of your party goes below zero and no one can heal him, or use the heal skill, he dies and with no cleric to revive =/.

When you think about it, I guess it'd be easier to play Dragon Age without a cleric/healer because once the battle is over, all the dead peeps come back to life.... ok. lol you're right >.< Image IPB
