My Mass Effect 2 was running just dandy until my computer overheated
midgame. Since then, it's crashed everytime. I tried reinstalling the
game, clearing temp files, removing and then updating video/sound
drivers, removing save games, going through EA tech suppor twice (who were stupendously, staggeringly unhelpful) - nothing.

Here's the error in full:

General protection fault!

History: memcpy() Address = 0x748d500a (filename not found) [in C:\\Windows\\WinSxS\\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.4053_none_d08d7da0442a985d\\MSVCR80.dll]
GImage::GImage() Address = 0x9248ae   (filename not found) [in c:\\program files (x86)\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\mass effect 2\\Binaries\\MassEffect2.exe]
GImage::GImage() Address = 0x9a3b96   (filename not found) [in c:\\program files (x86)\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\mass effect 2\\Binaries\\MassEffect2.exe]
GImage::GImage() Address = 0x902313   (filename not found) [in c:\\program files (x86)\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\mass effect 2\\Binaries\\MassEffect2.exe]

Anyone who can help me out would receive my eternal love.

I should add I'm now running this through Steam. But before that, I wasn't, and had the same error.

If the trigger was overheating, don't you think that could mean bad news for your hardware?

Have you tried other games since the overheat?

also when your computer overheated did it corrupt your registry and require u to restore back to an earlier point... if so u could need windows updates...

There was no need for a Windows update. The hardware's oveheated a bunch of times before with L4D2 - I just had to drop the gfx settings.

I ran cccleaner, a bunch of other fixes - nothing. Still this error. Anyone have any ideas?

Corrupted autosave file.

Move all of your save files out of your folder.

Move them back in until you find the corrupted save file.

BTW,

The same thing happened to me after 30 hours. I even reinstalled windows, but kept my save files. Once i removed the corrupted autosave file I'm going on 40 hours without a hiccup.

Thanks for the attempt, loombad. I sincerely wish that was the case. I'm still trying, and EA sports tech reps have told me to reinstall 5 times and clear temp files. It's been brutal.

Any new advice lurking?

dfm1 - just saw your PM. What versions of the 2005 Visual C++ libraries are you using? I use the ones released in July 2009. I see that you are running a 64 bit OS as am I. I do have both the x86 and x64 versions installed.

Have you updated your DirectX? Microsoft just released an update.

After your computer overheat you may want to do a bit of Hardware testing.

I like Memtest86+ for testing RAM. I usually run this on all my systems every 6 months or so just because. All consumer PCs memory is only 8 bit. There is no parity or ECC, so if a bit goes bad the only way to detect it is with a test program like Memtest86+. The usual sign of bad memory is random problems.

I think that I saw that you had reloaded Windows. If I am mistaken about this, running the following command should be done:

chkdsk c: /f/r

This fixes all NTFS errors that can be fixed and reads every disk sector and will try to fix or map out any bad sectors. Overheating disks will reduce their lifespan.

Doofus, thanks very much. Yes, after reading another of your posts, I updated directx and doublechecked all my video and sound drivers. No luck.

I ran chkdsk - no errors. I'll run memtest86+ shortly - it's a pretty new laptop, so I have my fingers crossed.

I'm not sure about visual C++ - that's not in my normal range of stuff I update/deal with. Is there a specific site I should go to?

After endless reinstalls, here's the current error:

General protection fault!

The Visual C++ is not updated by the Windows Update process.

The Visual C++ 2005 I have been using is this:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update

http://www.microsoft...72-9112bab119c2

Reference Microsoft KB973544

This is the DirectX RTE I am using.

http://www.microsoft...57-5ab8109cb4f5

Which x64 OS are you using, Vista or Win7?

I'm using Vista. I happened upon this fix: http://forums.comput...ed1a023c5b40d0a

But it hasn't worked for me.

I'm starting to think that Vista isn't allowing Steam to install the necessary cache files to fix this msvcr thing. But I don't know how to fix that, because I can't manually install outside of Steam.

 You say you upgraded from Vista to 7, however, did you do a fresh install? Or just an in place?
If you just did upgrade instead of fresh install, then you basically laid a bag over a hole to cover it up and the hole is directly in the path that windows uses for system operation. and dll's are critical to system function.

Try creating a backup image of just your c drive. Try www.easeus.com/disk-copy/

Hopefully  you have multiple partitions or someplace to store the backup image IF it succeeds in completing because if there is an error or file corruption in your system files then it likely won't complete anyway.

If it does complete the backup, then you should prepare your disk for a fresh install of 7.  First off I always liked to do a chkdisk or any other disk error checker of choice.

After that is done, provided it also has no problems, it's time to do the deed and boot up your computer from your dvd or whatever and install a fresh copy.  This is also a good time to do your partitioning and directory planning in case you are using RAID or any multiple disk setups.

Once it's installed, you should immediately install your anti virus and other protection suites and run full system scans of everything.  Will take some time, but tis necessary.  I use Avast 5 and love it, but Avira is good too if you can tolerate the nag screen.  Anything else that is free is pretty much garbage, avoid them.

Not sure how you feel about defregging, but after you install your security stuff, get a good defregger like Defraggler, MyDefrag, or Puran Defrag and run their most intense file organizing, free space optimizing, file packing program.  After they are done, I suggest NOW to pickup Easeus Partition Manager and make an extra partition on your main drive and set your operating system partition to about 20-25 gigs.  After thats done, you should be ready to reinstall your software onto your other partition, NOT C, and finish by retrieving any settings from your backup image if you desire to do so.

This seems like alot, but can be done in less than a day.  And you will know for sure that there is NOTHING whatsoever possibly wrong with your operating system, file structure, backup files or anything.  And even if you do have bad sectors, they are ignored on a fresh install anyway, and if you feel like fishing out some cash you can get them restored with HD Regen, but it is probably cheaper and faster to just buy another HDD.

Anyway, hope you fix this.

Ran a clean win 7 reinstall. I got a variation on the same error:

General protection fault!

History: memcpy() Address = 0x73cc500a (filename not found) [in C:\\Windows\\WinSxS\\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.4927_none_d08a205e442db5b5\\MSVCR80.dll]

GImage::GImage() Address = 0x924c2e (filename not found) [in c:\\program files (x86)\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\mass effect 2\\Binaries\\MassEffect2.exe]

GImage::GImage() Address = 0x9a4a76 (filename not found) [in c:\\program files (x86)\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\mass effect 2\\Binaries\\MassEffect2.exe]

GImage::GImage() Address = 0x902723 (filename not found) [in c:\\program files (x86)\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\mass effect 2\\Binaries\\MassEffect2.exe]

GImage::GImage() Address = 0x902612 (filename not found) [in c:\\program files (x86)\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\mass effect 2\\Binaries\\MassEffect2.exe]

Proceeded to use profanity. Finally installed, ran memtest86. Computer restarted 10 seconds into the test, three times.

Called Acer, pointed out they claimed they would run stress tests on the memory when I sent it in for service, and that they clearly did not. Getting complimentary shipping and sending it back in, sigh,again. Hopefully this will fix it.

Same drama for me - been having it for some time. Running Win 7 64 on a clean install.

Have latest GFx and sound drivers, plus updated DirectX and Visual C++ (2010 and 2008 redist).

Sometimes the game will play for a reasonable period (2 hrs), others, it will get 5 mins in, then produce this error association with the .dll file. It only ever happens in combat.

Running i7 920, HD4870, SB XFi XtremeGamer.

Any further thoughts from ppl out there on this one would be very useful. Great game, ruined by this issue.

This appears to be the same problem a lot of myself and a ton of other people are having with Dragon Age as well.

I've *read* (its on the internet so must be true eh?) that its an issue with Biowares games not getting along with Windows 7 x64. But this strikes me as a bit inaccurate because Bioware has had plenty warning that windows 7 was coming out and that more and more people are going to go with the 64 bit platform. Surely they had enough time to prepare.

I FIXED IT I FIXED IT YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY. Had the exact same problem. When you uninstall it does not remove the Bioware folder from Documents. I deleted this, but copied the SAVE folder to a different location, then copied it back after the files had been regenerated. Fixed my problem. I'm playing again!
