I'm trying to create a very dark skin tone, something along the lines of this:

Now, I did that by using a tattoo, (to be specific, I set the R Channel opacity to 100% on black without any tattoo selected) but sadly tattoo colours don't show up too well in game (he just looks a little tan) and obviously the tat doesn't cover all of him.

I've been playing with the materials edtior to create a skin tint, but I'm having a problem that whenever I try for darker colours, it starts to look really blotchy, like I've thrown some shoe polish on the poor fellow. Lighter skin colours are fine, but the darker it gets the blotchier it appears. (EDIT: On the right below)

How can I use the tint editor to create something like in the first shot as a skin tone?

I think maybe I need to do something with the tintmap? Only I have no idea where this is located or how to edit it. But, when I edit the tint, I notice that using the RGB channels does nothing. I think perhaps if I edited one of them to cover everything and then just set it to black, I'd get the same effect. I'm not sure if that's the best way to do this.
