I just completed Return to Ostagar and at the beginning there is a locked Mage's chest that needs a key - but I did not find a key during the quest. Is a key available? I seem to remember when I visited Ostagar the first time in the game I opened that chest (or another in the Mage area) by coming back at night. Would that take the same key?

It's the chest you opened when you were first in Ostagar. Somehow it was able to lock itself again and if you used the key before it magically disappears from your inventory. The chest will stay closed.
If you didn't do the quest to open this chest at the start of the game, the key should be near the place where the prisoner was held.
