So I'm doing a second playthrough of ME1. I've done every plot planet except for the one with the Conduit. I've done every side mission I can.
I'm level 58. Around 39k experience away from level 59. I haven't touched the metal sphere that grants you the neanderthal vision and an extra level.
Is there any way of me getting to level 59 before I have to do the Conduit mission? I hear the orb on Eletania provides an extra level if you use it, and I"m hoping to use it when I hit 59 for the level 60 achievement.
Leveling in ME1?

Most definitely. I've reached level 59 on my current play-through so far (on hardcore, if that makes a difference) and I'm just starting the infiltration mission on Virmire. I've done about 80% of the side-quests and have never killed an enemy with the Mako. Weaken them with it, sure, but always finish them off on foot. Do all the decryption you can, all the codex entries you can, and all the killing you can because it all yields experience.
I think I was level 56 when I found that Orb, but I was very close to 57 (about 1,000 or so experience points from it.) I just assumed I'd leveled up normally; had no idea that it gives you an extra level. If I'd known, I'm certain I could be at 60 by now.

Well, turns out the orb doesn't level you, and there isn't enough experience points to go from 58 to 60 through the Ilos mission. At least not on Hardcore difficulty.

Yep, just figured out that there is no way for me to hit 60 now. I'm still at 59 with every side mission completed and just under 100,000 xp left to reach that insanely high number of 862,100. So, I'll go to Ilos and get about 55,000 xp from there until the end (from what I hear) which leave me 40,000 short. And from where I'm standing, there is no way to gain that much XP from random kills and hacks and decryptions.
I guess I could have done it, had I planned better and found every place with respawning enemies for more kills, chose every dialouge option that would lead to more kills or furthered the assignment, and generally paid more attention to getting XP. But for now, I'll just do a third play on insanity, starting at 59 and only doing missions and assignments that are important for creating a character for Mass Effect 2. (Should hit 60 very very early (like Eden-Prime-early), and finish the game in a few hours.)
That orb would have helped if it worked, huh . . .

If you have the PC version you could set it up to cheat and do the cheat to give yourself extra xp to save yourself time. It's what I did on my PC version because I didn't have enough time to do another playthrough to get to 60 and get all the side quests done that import over to ME2 by the time ME2 came out.

If you have done the sidequests, and only have Ilos left, not much XP gained from that if you're probably over 100k away. If you have sidequests left, I'd highly recommend doing the Armstrong Nebula "Geth Incursion" quests and try to kill as many as you can outside of the Mako. I think doing that whole line like that netted me a 75-100k XP by the time I was done alone.
