I stumbled upon a MassEffect/Halo crossover earlier and it made me contemplate the differences and similarities of AI from Halo compared to those in Mass Effect.
Your typical Mass Effect AIs use quantum blue boxes, so they are bound to their hardware and unable to transfer themselves to other machines without loosing their identity. Then we have the geth which are purely software and simulate the workings of an organic brain as a network in order to maintain sentience.
Now the AIs in Halo are created by scanning human brains and creating a digital analogue. This process destroys the organic tissue, but it can also be done on cloned organic tissue in the case of Cortana. This makes Halo AIs more similar to the geth in design than AIs that use quantum blue boxes like EDI.
Anyhow I thought it would be interesting if Shepard ended up as an AI as a result of Project Lazarus instead of the canon result. Of course I'm having trouble thinking of a good reason for this to happen. Maybe his/her body was too badly damaged or whatever, and rather than sticking him/her into a YMIR mech like I saw in two other fics, they would think he would be more useful if coverted into an AI.
Of course that would bring up the question of how would Shepard physically go on missions and stuff. Since he/she would now be a software based AI, using a geth body, seems like the easy answer. I imagine with AI capabilities like that, Shepard could hack a bunch of geth, erase the original programs and replace them with his/her own remote controls.

Anyway, even the slightest change in the brain could lead to alteration of character, much as the quantum blueboxes. Then again, there has been evidence of people who have suffered brain damage who have successfully rerouted function to another part of the brain without evidence of being an altered individual.
The Geth do have a similarity to quantum blueboxes in a way, though. Legion has 1,183 programs downloaded into the hardware platform, though they are also backed up in some other geth database. Everything these programs have experienced within the Legion platform has diverged from that of the original programs, only converging again when Legion connects to the Collective to access or share data. The longer Legion remains in separation, the more he becomes unique from his original state.
Not only that, but if they had to rebuild Legion, his memory only goes up to the point of his last upload. Every memory from that point diverges from the potential memories Legion could have had if he not been damaged enough to be replaced. Even if they decided to duplicate Legion into a second concurrent platform, the memories are different and so will the personality be different, either slightly or significantly.

Maybe you could write something like this instead if your other thing isn't moving along, Kikai.

I imagine the confrontation with Tali would be particularly interesting.
Besides, it's not really the same thing in the Mass Effect universe. As Anderson said, geth aren't the bogeymen than they used to be after 2 years.

She confuses me. She doesn't let a group of innocent Asari through but does let through a robot that happens to look exactly like a gethMesina2 wrote...

It's a commentary on modern Air Port security.

It's what comes after the beverages that I'm referring to.

What? I was putting on a belt.
Blue jeans don't exactly agree with a Turian's thin waistline without support.

That means he has something in common with Bender.
