I find the Dark Ritual quite disturbing and nasty, because to do it as a female, you have to coerce poor Alistair into not only doing something that is counter to his nature and beliefs, and the possible repercussions of doing it could end up creating more evil in the future, but the fact that you are basically asking him to get nearly raped by a woman he dislikes in doing so. I always hit the esc button when the cutscene starts. His face is the expression of a terrified rabbit about to get ripped to shreds by a coyote, and Morrigan's face, like the predator about to mercilessly feast. And Alistair's reaction when you suggest the ritual....

He is probably terrified by her thrusting breasts and obvious cameltoe (don't think I didn't notice what you did, character modellers!)
Still, at least we have solved the mystery of why Morrigan puts on a bra to have sex. It's so she can stuff a couple of chicken fillets in there to make her normally modest boobies look so much larger.

I tried that scene with Loghain just for a laugh and he looks even more unimpressed. Then again, he's a chap who is looking for a sword to throw himself on, not looking for a girl to throw on his sword, so to speak.

I'm also not so sure Alistair despises Morrigan quite so much.  I always got the impression from their various dialogues that he's like the fourth grade boy who doesn't know how to display newly discovered feelings for the opposite sex, so he throws rocks and calls her names.  I half expected to find the two making out at some point in the game.  Obviously I'm wrong, but the disdain presented by the game designers didn't always feel authentic.  At least from Alistair's side.

Yes, when I first heard Alistair and Morrigan bickering I thought I was trapped in a RomCom.

ha! this is so very true!  Morrigan - it is especially noticeable in that scene in particular although the women models in general are like this, unmodded - is a small C when dressed kicking up to an E when in her lingerie :D  I laughed a few times through about this, and then downloaded a mod to fix the inconsistency.  Strangely enough, I had to download an A cup mod to get a B-C cup in RL but I digress....  Loghain *is* the least amused.    I am going to try to glitch it on my next playthrough now that I know it is possible and do the deed myself.  :)  Thanks Polaris for stating how to do that!  I saw that option before and thought it was a mod making it borked, so that is good to know.

Male vs female pc:

For me, I try to try both. I really do.  I am not sure whether I just enjoy the females more because I am female in RL or because they are written to be more crafty (in general) and I love playing rogues and snarky females so they fit together.   I have had a few male characters and they either get deleted or left for a while.  Part of it I think is that the female romance-able options in the game are a bit too easy -- no challenge, they like you almost on accident.   Leilana of course is like that with my female character as well, I guess I just *dread* the breakup scenes lol   Some things make way more sense on males in this game, animation wise anyway.  As a female character in love with Alistair, the Dark ritual is harder at the end.  As a male in love with zev or leilana i suppose the same may be true though.

I think though the truest reason is this:  I like being a girl, dolling my character up to look beautiful and then run around and flirt with boys while I kick arse when needed (wanted).  Not so much different than I have been in the real world I guess lol

I agree, Loghain is absolutely funny. The dead wife remark, and Morrigan's comeback had me laughing at my monitor, and his facial expression when Morrigan waltzes toward him is priceless.

Guard? What guard? I usually yield to Cauthrien because I love the break-out scenes for the companions (Broma Bros, ftw). Is there a guard there? Where is mine? Is he hiding? No fair!

There's a guard outside the cell.  If you try to escape you can trick him in several different ways.  I think in one you pretend Alistair's sick, or you can hit on him and for some reason he's willing to go into a cell with two strangers and strip down to his underwear. . .  Not the brightest!  Then you kill him.

It's if you break out by yourself. The very first person (spare Alastair) you speak with there.

Edit: Damn ninjas, they are everywhere.

Not almost all female players hate the Morrigan ritual scene -- the ones who do are very vocal, but there are plenty of us who think Morrigan is doing the warden a favor, not "having her man." I also have a very different spin on the human noble female -- she marries Alistair always, but not for love and not for power. She does it out of duty, despite loving someone else (yes, I'm a Zev fangirl).

I can't get into playing a male character. It just doesn't feel right to me. I played one all the way through, and have started a second, but the game feels real enough to me that playing a male just seems weird.

Re the ritual:  Me, too.  If it's between mine or my lover's life and him sleeping one time with a woman he otherwise can't stand, it's a no-brainer.  My PC's are either practical about it or they do it but hate it for other reasons (i.e. that they consider it cowardly and dangerous).

I've realized one thing I like about playing a male PC.  On a certain level, a male swordsman just feels the most right for a medieval-type noble hero.  My first few characters on Oblivion, I could only play males for this reason.  He even looks so cool because he gets to use the Cousland family shield and sword- I imagine he'll use that shield throughout the game.  And that shield bash is just... sexy.  LOL  (You could do this with a woman, too, I just have usually made my women dual-wield.  Alistair is being re-trained to DW in this game.)

Anyway, it's a credit to DA:O that it's been entirely comfortable playing female warriors.  Ironically I think that is because the game world acknowledges that it's something unusual, versus importing an anachronistic Hollywood "ninja woman" image.  The female warriors in DA:O are more like the actual female warriors that do crop up at times in the history books.

+1 I love the line where he asks the female warden to kick Morrigan's ass for him and that he'd pay to see that fight.  This is post-tent, so perhaps it's his way of confessing a fantasy.

As a female player I am ecstatic that games are starting to give you the option of playing asa female in a deep and emotionally involving storyline. I find that I simply can't bring myself to play a male pc with any immersion anymore. I played Two worlds when it came out and back then I was used to only playing a male in games Now after Fable 2, ME, and DA:O I cannot go back to playing a man. I feel so much more immersed and connected to the characters and stories as a female. I tried to play a male character but got bored.

For alot of men, it probably is. However, for someone like Alistair, such a scenario is far from appealing.

I did not get that impression. Some people did. I take into account both of their histories and personalities. Alistair was raised by the Chantry, trained to be an enforcer of Chantry mage law. Even though he didn't want anything to do with that route in life, certain habits/thoughts that are instilled in him are harder to break. One is a certain distrust for apostates, since his whole life life he has been taught they are wicked and dangerous people.

Morrigan ahs been raised to despise and distrust the Chantry. She has stated that she has been hunted and harassed by them before. templars to her represent fanatical religious stupidity and oppression.

Their own personal attitudes are also in conflict. Alistair is a person why tries to look out for and please others. He has a naivite about the world, and prefers compassion and heroism as opposed to blatant self interest. Morrigan believes looking out for one's self and personal empowerment/fulfillment should always trump the desires of others, and helping people too weak to help themselves is a pointless waste of time, unless you personaly benefit. Thus, Alistair sees Morrigan as a cruel, selfish ****, and Morrigan sees Alistair as idealistic moron whos only use is potential darkspawn bait.

However, neither really hate each other enough that they will end up attacking or turning out and out vicious. There is no reason to. Alistair might be a templar, but he is not directly interfering with or trying to oppress Morrigan. Morrigan might be an apostate, but she is not engaging in havoc or trying to impede his mission, nor is she out hurting people. Thus, I'd describe the relationship as civilized disdain and opposition for one another, and given their personalities, their banter reflects each individuals personal methods of insulting/belittling one another.

It's more like to be the banter of political or religous opponents using subtle methods to undermine one another's position that schoolyard "flirting".

If talking to a male warden, Alistair will admit that he finds Morrigan beautiful. You don't hear that while playing a female PC.

I wish he would say that to the female PC, to be honest.  She is beautiful, so a physical attraction is completely understandable. I guess it would distract from the whole blush of first love for some if he admitted to admiring Morrigan's assets, though.

I have tried several times to make it through the game with a male PC and I get hung up on both their faces, since I can't seem to make a guy look like anything but a total duh-faced tool, and their weird, loping run. I would love if I could get Finn Cousland past Redcliffe and onto the throne, to annoy Anora with his man-wh*re ways, but I always run back to one of my female characters.

It's pretty early in the game, IIRC (I'm sure someone who's played a male character more than once can correct me on this if I'm wrong), either when the male warden starts a romance with Morrigan or during the juicy gossip conversation (or maybe it's in the juicy gossip conversation if the male warden is sleeping with Morrigan -- I don't remember).

I usually play male characters unless there's some achievement involved that requires being a female, like romancing Alistair.  I'm male and I relate better with the male characters.  I also like roleplaying as a masculine, heroic, knightly type character, who's off to save the world and protect those dear to him.

I'm a strait man, but all my characters (in the teens, but only completed 2 full playthroughs) have been female. Why?

1) For the same reason that a lot of women on the boards have expressed. RPGs, of late, have but a good deal of effort, time and money into establishing a chance for someone to play a hero of their own ideals, and male/female is a large part of this. For so long, it's been a stock male hero in many games, and now, with the chance to go the opposite way, it's rather refreshing, actually.

2) Pure selfish man-ism, but I like having the ability to look at a form that's physically pleasing to me, for the untold hours I'll be playing the game.

3) I've gone through the different romances, from different sources, and I find that I like the options available to a female warden, more than a male. Morigan is the type of woman I could be friends with, but never really romance or date. She's too..prickly..for me to get past, as a man. Having her as a friend to my female characters feels more..right..in the stories I like to think up, while (role)playing. Alistair is the sort of man I've seen an enormous amount of women fall head-over-heels for, in reality, and he's the sort that, as a man I would be very happy to call a friend. If he were female, both (s)he and Leliana would be the sorts I'd be most attracted to. Zev...I haven't done a Zevran romance, yet, but I suspect it'll be one of my favorites, once I get around to it.

No, I agree with you that the intent of the writer(s) were for that.  Just at times it felt more like my explanation.  Besides, isn't Alistair a virgin?  I don't care how pious a man may be (or claim to be,) he is still just a man.  And prone to all the same weaknesses all men have.  Women.  Especially ones with Morrigan's sex appeal.  And most men can hate a woman, and still want to have sex with her.
