Yep, Zev!*spoiler* He actually was attempting suicide, if that makes you feel any better.
I didn't know about the suicide. I really haven't explored Zev beyond the dialogues about his past. But the whole I was raised to be what I am with no choice has been done many, many times before. Does he have a side quest like the other companions? I would assume so. Perhaps I need to explore him fully to be fair.

You do. His "side quest" is not optional and it's not something he asks you to do. Romancing him will allow you to get to know him more quickly, but if you have high approval with him, even as a friend, you will learn a lot about him, his regrets, why he became an assassin, why he stayed an assassin, and finally, why he wanted to die.
Edit: You may also see true gratitude there for allowing him to start a new path.
Second edit: As a romance partner, it ends far later than the others, but in many ways, more deeply as well.
Third edit: He also has more to say than any of the other companions in all the areas. And his advice is usually (though not always) quite good.

Well I had his approval to 98 by the end and had talked with him at length about his past, but never was asked about a side quest. When I talked him at the end, he was staying in Ferelden and had asked to stay as my companion. I said no because me and Leliana were gonna go with Sten to his homeland. Alas, it ended and I never got to make the journey.

It was when you encountered Taliesen and he fought with you. But if you didn't talk to him after that, you most likely wouldn't have found out who Taliesen was to him, or about his last mission. And if you don't take him in your party, you don't hear what he has to say in the various areas.

Okay, I see what you mean now. Yes, I do recall. I told that Crow fellow, Zev didn't need them (the Crows) anymore. Or something along those lines. As for romancing Zev or any of the guy's, for a slightly homophobic guy it's difficult to get past the distaste. Even with a female character (of which I mostly play.) I realize I'm just gonna have to suck it up and do so one of these times in order to further explore the game. Sten would be more interesting to explore in that fashion, but I guess that is not an option. Maybe I'll do Zev, since he almost looks like a woman.

I find the Dark Ritual quite disturbing and nasty, because to do it as a female, you have to coerce poor Alistair into not only doing something that is counter to his nature and beliefs, and the possible repercussions of doing it could end up creating more evil in the future, but the fact that you are basically asking him to get nearly raped by a woman he dislikes in doing so. I always hit the esc button when the cutscene starts. His face is the expression of a terrified rabbit about to get ripped to shreds by a coyote, and Morrigan's face, like the predator about to mercilessly feast. And Alistair's reaction when you suggest the ritual....
The only reason i do it, is because of the fates that befall your loved ones should you sacrifice yourself. No one has a happy ending if your do that.
I don't like the ritual, but weighing the pros and cons, my character usually takes it. The baby is more disturbing to me than the actual sex, although I always feel guilty about telling Alistair to do it. On one play through I hadn't made him king, intending to do the ritual, but he made me feel so bad when I suggested it, that I didn't make him do the ritual either. When I told him "nevermind", he was sooo relieved. Of course, the burden was on me then, because I knew I wouldn't let him die, either. I then left him at the gates and sacrificed myself.
Now *that* made me feel the worst for Alistair. He just wanders off and disappears. Made me feel like I took everything from his life. After that ending, a little dark sex ritual with Morrigan doesn't seem so bad (in terms of Alistair -- still not sure about that baby!). Morrigan, you said we were like sisters, I'm (foolishly) trusting you!
In regards to male vs female -- I was happy to see this thread, because I was wondering the differences, too. I just can't stick with a male character. I took one through the HN origins and the CE origins, just to see the differences. HN doesn't seem too different, but CE was (to me, at least). I think as a female elf, the CE is more powerful (or at least, leaves you angrier). Love it when Soris slides the sword across the floor to you, and the guard says, "Oh sod it". That's right! You die now! Like dogs, Shianni.
It sounds like after the origins there aren't too many differences, besides the romances. Just little comments. I would like to hear Alistair finally admit he thinks Morrigan is attractive. That would be fun to see as a girl too, especially if you could make him blush or stutter for admitting it

Well I don't even know what to do with this. I suppose I should warn you that there are Zevran fangirls about. LOL They've been more gracious than I would have. That said, I also didn't pick up the Zevran romance for a while because the Alistair character is more my type. However, it's in many ways much deeper than Alistair's IMO, and Zevran's story is certainly far from shallow. YMMV, but at least don't go around lambasting the character as "substanceless" unless you're prepared to have some of us point and laugh.Helios969 wrote...

I'm surprised at how many male players say they can't get into the Morrigan romance. My male PC digs her, while simultaneously being a bit nervous about the whole mage thing... you'd have to be brave to romance a mage. (What if arguments result in fireballs? Heh.) Maybe it's because I'm a woman IRL and my fantasy male doesn't mind a woman who is "prickly," i.e. who speaks her mind.

I managed to do the Dark Ritual with Morrigan with my FemWarden. It was interesting.
Is that really possible . . . or are you just messing with me? Playing mostly female characters I looked continually for a way to romance Morrigan. My understanding is that it is not possible.
It's possible.
No, you cannot have a romance. No, I did not use a mod/the toolset. Yes, it's something the developers didn't intend.
I would very much like to know how to go about it.
I second this motion! Everything I've read about Morrigan points to the fact that she is strictly heterosexual. Plus, there's the oddity of how she's going to conceive her "special baby" while making love to another woman.

Edit: Nevermind! I found the answer to my question earlier in the thread. Ah, to old adage of reading before posting holds true, especially if a question arises *early* in a multipage thread!
As for male vs. female PCs, I've only done one playthrough so far, and it was as a female (IRL, I am male). Why? Mainly because it was something different. Most games I have — Resistance 2, MAG, Killzone 2 and so on — the only option you have to play is as male. Well, DAO gave me the choice of being female or male, so I chose the former and didn't regret it one bit.

You can make the guard in your cell undress before you beat the living snot out of him. Good times.
You can do this as a male character as well - it was actually one of the funniest moments in the game for me.

She is an Asari!
As to Morrigan, my guess is that most male players distaste for Morrigan isn't her being frank, it's her personality. Same as with Jack and Ashley, to take two other biomances in consideration. This "men are afraid of strong women" rhetoric makes me tired.

I'm also not so sure Alistair despises Morrigan quite so much. I always got the impression from their various dialogues that he's like the fourth grade boy who doesn't know how to display newly discovered feelings for the opposite sex, so he throws rocks and calls her names. I half expected to find the two making out at some point in the game. Obviously I'm wrong, but the disdain presented by the game designers didn't always feel authentic. At least from Alistair's side.
I'm also of the opinion that Alistair doesn't actually hate Morrigan. If you've romanced him, you know that he enjoys teasing banter. Sometimes he seems afraid of being taken seriously; it's almost like he'd rather you mocked him. He doesn't trust her and thinks she's cold hearted, but listening to their banter, I find it really hard to believe he's not enjoying it. And he is a straight guy, and I doubt he can really hate a beautiful woman who's so much fun to bait and tease...I don't think she likes it nearly so much, though.
And I've said this before, but if you had two characters who behave like Alistair & Morrigan in a movie, you'd just know they were going to wind up together.

Yes, she is. And I love that about her. Tenderness is all fine and good, but if you're looking for a good roll in the hay, I'm going with the "dirty girl." And sassy girls are the best.
I agree there is more depth to Zev than Alistair, but his character is so unoriginal that it makes talking to him difficult. While Alistair is for the most part a flat character in terms of writing, he at least has some originality to his personality.
Yes I do see much passion from the Zev fanclub.

I don't get it about Morrigan, though. Being frank IS her personality- what else about her personality is so distasteful? I mean, I play generally noble characters who certainly disagree with her on things, but that doesn't mean I don't like the character. It's really Leliana I don't care for, so there was no way my male PC was going to go with princess stabbity. I do feel bad on his behalf, though, that at the early stage M. is probably thinking of his usefulness to her rather than genuine affection. Not that he is really serious about her at this point, either.
Anyway, not to make this a Morrigan romance thread... Heh, another little difference I notice is that certain lines I took to be flirtatious as a female PC, I now have to hear with different ears. Like when Sergeant Kylon tells you that the sketch passed around of the Warden "doesn't do you justice." I had deluded myself that my man Kylon was referring to my character's elusive beauty. But alas, he says the same thing to the male Warden, too.

I happen to like Morrigan and went with her first, but the strong women beware thing annoys me immensely. That she doesn't give a crap about other people (not the PC, others), shows sadistic tendencies and always keep stuff from you might be it, not that she speaks her mind.Addai67 wrote...
