It is a convoluted area, for sure - if you're really frustrated then GameFAQs has a good walkthrough by noz3r0 which has a pretty comprehensive guide to the Fade and how to get all the stat upgrades.

sure is convoluted, but will try and persevere before I cave in and resort to a walkthrough..getting some nice stats increases, tho.

My general rule is to start from the Raw Fade going clockwise. Do as much of each area as you can, then move on, until you get to Templar's Nightmare. Don't go there until you have all the forms. Go back to the other areas first, finish them (keep checking your map for all the mouse holes, spirit doors and massive doors and any grayed-out rooms you may have missed). Note that an area looks "finished" (you get a quest update and the rune changes on the Fade Pedestal) once you've killed the head demon in that area, but not necessarily after you've found all the nifty attribute bonuses, so don't let that fool you. There is also an attribute bonus back in Weisshaupt, accessible in the spirit form only. This is for PC version, mind you. Good luck.

Once you realize that a lot of the doors don't open up new areas and just take you to the same place, it becomes easier (or maybe harder?).

I should mention that the reason I go to Burning Tower first is that you pick up an area of effect spell. Nice if you're not a PC mage. Also the Burning Man is the fastest in terms of running speed, the better to zip around all those winding passages.
