When playing a "fixed" character, it is possible to do voicovers for them; it's when you have multiple options for the character race that it gets much less cost effective to have full voiceovers for the characters.

Yeah.  That's why I said it's not feasible, from a developer's POV.  But I don't see why a gamer should despise the option outright, unless it means they get stuck with a bad voice.  A simple "no voice" option would take care of that complaint, should the day ever come when it's more cost effective to record lots and lots of dialogue.

I loved the game, but I had a huge problem with the fact that our character's diddnt speak. I think its definetly a remnant of older games that needs not be continued.

FWIW, I add my vote for NOT having our PC's voiced in future games. This one thing ruins Mass Effect for me. I don't like the female voice, so I tried playing a male Shepard even though I don't like to play male characters, and long story short, I haven't managed to get past a couple hours play.

Okay, well maybe there shouldn't be a full-on crazy amount of voiced dialog for the PC, BUT i would like to hear my PC make a little more noise, the only time i remember hearing my PC and thinking "awesome" was at the end of the game, where you slash your sword across a certain something.

I wanted to add my NO vote. I've mentioned the same thing in another thread on the same topic, having a character that speaks makes it hard for me to immerse into my character.

NO. No PC voice-acting in any RPG, ever again. I feel adding VO for the PC has been Bioware's biggest misstep ever, when it comes to facilitating roleplaying. I don't get how people argue that the PC should to talk so that the game would be more cinematic. Why on earth would you want the game to be more cinematic? This is a role-playing game, not a movie. Being cinematic doesn't make a better RPG, mostly it results in the exact opposite.

I somehow feel the people who don't want VO on principle are a vocal minority. I have been playing CRPGs since the AD&D gold box sets, and I too feel that the no-VO tradition is an obsolete one when cost is not taken into account. It's like arguing for silent movies.

I really don't understand why a voice hinders immersion. Your character probably doesn't look much like you either, but not staring at yourself on screen doesn't shatter your fragile hold on role-playing does it? Maybe you do make your char an exact replica of you, and bravo if you do. But really, I don't care about cinematics or whatever, my char having a voice simply fleshes him out, makes him more present in the game, and thus it brings me more into the game, whereas a silent char feels more to me like a guy sitting at a computer interacting with the people of Ferelden.

Have you ever read the dialogue lines of what your character says out loud or in your head? It actually feels like you are saying it as opposed someone like shepard from mass effect. You are the character. Not a 3rd person who is making decisions for the character.

Yeah, I said I often speak the lines out loud in my first post in this thread.  But, that's because my character is a mute doll.  Sorry I don't get the Mass Effect references - apparently voice acting was horrid in that game, so, ok.  I just happen to think the opposite of you and many others - no voice = less immersion, for the very fact that it requires more of me (teenage gamer) and less of my character (elven mage).  I think there's just a difference in the roleplaying experience we each desire.  If my side is less pure or old-school, oh well.

But, at least I understand the thrust of the immersion argument now.  I'm not nearly opinionated enough to keep arguing my side.  90% of the RPG's I've played have had voiceless player characters and I won't shed a tear if that doesn't change.
