I finished Horizon, then recruited Tali, then I completed 4 Loyalty missions and the Collector Ship mission triggered.

I was under the impression it only appeared if I had recruited 2 of the 3 new party members after Horizon (Tali, Thane, and Samara). This is my third playthrough and both times the mission only triggered after I recruited 2 of the party members.

So did I glitch the Collector Ship early?

No, the collector ship triggers five missions after Horizon, one of which has to be a recruitment mission.

I wanted to take Thane with me on the mission. Shouldn't be much of an issue either way...

You can actually do six missions before the collector ship. Recruit Tali, spend what feels like a week on Illium with Liara, Thane, Samara and Miranda, then do Mordin and Grunt's loyalty missions on Tuchanka.

Then I must have hit a bug on two of my playthroughs then.

On my first playthrough, after Horizon I had Grunt still in his tube and I recruited Thane, I then the loyalty missions for Miranda, Jacob, Jack, Garrus, Mordin, Thane and Zaeed and the collector mission didn't trigger, did most of the N7 missions and again it didn't trigger. It wasn't until I released Grunt (and thus have my 8th party member) that it then did trigger.

Now on a current playthrough, after Horizon, again with Grunt still in his lifepod, did a couple of N7 missions, did the loyalty quests for Jack, Jacob and Miranda, recruited Thane, Tali and Samara and it didn't unlock until I finished with Samara's recruitment quest (making her again my 8th party member as not recruited Zaeed yet on this run).

I'll point back to the first playthrough, after horizon I recruited 1 person and did 7 loyalty missions and it didn't unlock until I released Grunt... thus then having 8 recruits.

But then you cannot get everyone loyal AND rescue the entire crew, right?

Until you complete the Reaper IFF mission, you can still get everyone's loyalty... minus Legion. You can get Legion's loyalty before the Collector attack on the Normandy. Then I've heard you have 2 missions to go to the Omega-4 Relay before they start killing the crew.
