Ok, I just picked up Shale... I am wondering if he is better used as a tank or a damager? Basicly I will either be subbing out Sten or Alastair with him... He does seem to have potential for both, more hp and stamina then Alastair but the lack of a shield will probably be a severe handicap am I right?
At the same time his damage doesn't seem to be all that great compared to Sten... By the looks of it Sten does better as a two-handed damager, alastair will do better as a tank with a shield? I am guessing Shale is meant to somewhat fill both roles but not as good at either on his own trying to fufill one role entirly?
Shale as a tank or damager? What is his role?

I use him as a bit of both, leaning a bit more towards damage but that may just be because of personal preference. He's a great member if you're looking for extra front lines fighters, but alastair is one heck of a tank with those shield abilities and i don't think shale can match that.

So maybe give Sten the boot? I don't mind he's a bit of an ass, but some thing, Shale doesn't seem to have as good of damage as Sten, but a lot more HP... Prolly better to keep Al and remove Sten?

I've been using Alastair and Shale as my front lines with Wynne providing back up, I more or less just provide various support as needed (arcane warrior mage) and so far the only thing that has given me a significant amount of grief is the high dragon.

I pretty much just activate his threaten mode and taunt, then use stone aura and then he's soaking up the damage while the party is getting the buffs from his stone aura.

I took him intending to keep him as DPS as I am a shield tank but found that his DPS is a bit lacking and might use either Sten or Oghren as DPS instead. His tanking on the other hand is ridiculous as even without threaten and taunt enemies generally rush him and his constitution when I got him was like 39 or something with mine at 22 or so. That's a lot of HP to run through but I did not that the blocking from the shield or reduced damage does balance it out.

If you equip your tanks with good equipment shale won't be nearly as good as them. All he has is a lot of hp, which is useless as heals work with fixed amount and not %, which means that in the game defence/armor is the most important for tanking.
I think Shale is best as a CC/off-tank . Switch between his modes depending on situation, there are enoguh talent points to make him fairly versatile.
