I agree, OP. I've instantly gone from being incredibly excited about this expansion to... eh. I'm certainly no longer counting the days. The thrills for me in DA:O were the relationships and conversations and getting involved with the characters. Romancing Zev and slowing realizing that there was a lot more to him was *much* more fun than, say, killing hundreds of boring mobs in the Deep Roads.
I'm glad I haven't pre-ordered it. If it's just trudging around and killing stuff? You know, there are about 10,000 other games where I can do that -- and many of those games have much better and more challening combat systems. Character relationships is where BioWare shines; why on earth would they decide to omit their strongest asset?
No romance does not equal hack'n slash and no story. If you have ever played let's say... Obsidians "KOTOR:The sith Lords", you know that relationships can be well made without there beeing a "true romance". Atton ,Visas Marr or Brianna (voiced by Grey DeLisle btw.) all had a relationship with you without it ever really turning into a romance..

I would argue those were romances, perhaps understated, subtle and more implied romance to which there wasn't often direct resolution given (though you were able to give them a response just after Kreia either killed what remained the Jedi Council or revealed some of her true purpose to the Exile if you killed them yourself, that allowed you to display your true feelings. I still remember that mediation moment with Visas Marr

In that respect Chris Avellone and co brought something similar to what they did in Planescape: Torment, more understated but very present romantic themes that were there for you to build on if you wished to, and could interpret for yourself the extent to which they run (other companions such as Keira are certainly aware of attractions between you and these others)
Yes I agree, but the "romantic theme" could still for all we know be in Awakening.. Without there necessarily being a romance.. Im sure there will be some sort of bonding with your new companions and not just a big Dungeon Crawl.
I know I can get heat for what Im about to say, considering this is a Bioware forum and all, but I found Obsidian to create more intressting and deeper characers than Bioware.. Ops!
That said DA:O has Biowares best companions since Baldurs gate.

Agreed. Maybe the romantic interaction is a lot more subtle and uderstated. I'm curious to see what BioWare can do in a game WITHOUT having to rely on the romance sidequest gimmick. In Dragon Age, it was quite nicely done (particularly Morrigan and Zevran), but in Mass Effect, Jade Empire, and KOTOR, the sidequests were mediocre and could be kinda cheesy at times.
The expansion is short compared to the original, so I'm kinda glad they're focusing on putting together a tight narrative with an antagonist we can actually feel something for. Or maybe even somewhat agree with.
I agreee about Obsidian as well. While I like BioWare games (Dragon Age is the best thing they've done in a LONG time) the writing in Obsidian's games is generally superior. KOTOR II was light years ahead of the original in that department, even being as unfinished as it was. And Mask of the Betrayer was a freaking masterpiece.
But the DA franchise has a whole ton of potential that I hope will go fulfilled with future expansions and sequels.

Still, no problem with it since this expansion is possibly more like a segue to game 2. DOES go against the epilogue where certain party members REMAIN WITH YOU TO HELP REBUILD the Grey Warden's order though, since hel-lo, that IS what you are doing in Awakening, right?
As for the no DLC? Again, not much problem AS LONG AS when my continuing GW rogue shows up at her new posting the weapons, rings and attribute + modifying armor awaiting to suit-up in will be BETTER than what is going to be lost and not a downgrade. Expansions should not mean two (plus) steps backwards.
Note to self: remember to de-rune my Starfang before it goes poof...as well as sell all Shale's crystals for cash.
Oghren? Well according to Origin's storyline it makes sense, only ugh. Oh, don't get me wrong, he's not a hated NPC, (unlike two others,) just one I do not use in any of my play-throughs because there's just no interest in him. Sure, I get him (them all) up to 100-ish friend level, but he's just a camp-sitter. Fact that he is going to be a NPC, well, fingers crossed he's been re-worked and not just a stone I'll be forced to drag around because I lack any other warrior choices. Actually do have some confidence it could be like this because if anyone in Origins does get transformed...well, as said, we'll see.

(Mods to the rescue again, looks like)
One thing I'd like to add in regards to the expansion's moddability (sorry console users!), is that since the approval meter appears to still exist, as long as the companions have got suitable voice clips for yes/no responses, it'd be fairly simple to seamlessly add romances to the game.

Much about Awakening sounds great. Seeing Loghain, Oghren, Wynne and Alistair sounds like fun. I'm not even going to miss the DLC loot.
But.....
According to the FAQ there won't be any romances. That is disappointing. A large portion of the fun in Origins were the romances. Navigating the conversational pitfalls of triggering a romance with Lelianna when you're really interested in Zevran. Being dumped by Alistair because you convinced him to become king. All the torturous tricky dialogue choices make the game a great deal of fun.
It's still pre-ordered. But I'm now a lot less excited about it.
Whoa, that is somewhat of a bummer. Hopefully that means they'll be fine-tuning the romances we had from the previous, but still makes ya a bit nervous.

so i wonder if i can take back my pre order....because i really dont want to pay $40 for an expansion that is not going to carry a romance or let you start a new romance. sorry but i slept with Alistair within the first 10 hours of the game. and oh boy for oghren! *sarcasm* he was funny. but i never used him to play. the only time i had him in my party was if i wanted to hear drunken banter.

Ok really i hate how some people complain about it being 15 hours for 3 reasons. Reason 1, WE DO NOT KNOW IF ITS ONLY 15 HOURS!!! Reason 2, 15 hours is quite a long time actually. Most expansions to games are about that or shorter. Reason 3 you cant really put a time frame on the whole how long the game takes because hell some people likes playing all the side quests and like to level and some people like to rush through it. It could take someone 15 hours and it might take someone 70 hours who knows.
15 hours is actually quite short, I paid $60 for DA:O and I have put 50 hours into the game before I even got to the landsmeet. So for $20 less we get 40 hours less AND no romance????

Spookyhouse if your still one this forum. IT NEVER SAID YOU WOULD NOT STILL BE WHATEVER YOU ENDED!!!... You still could be queen and just fighting the darkspawn so suck it up. Maybe in the next expansion pack they will make you the queen and all you get to do is tell armies who to attack like Risk just for you. Plus you still are with the person but you wont be able to sleep with them/ have sex with them. Get over it, it's not like that was all that important after the first time you did it.
True, it said you would be away from your previous life is why there was no romance. But it also said that Alistair was a possible companion, so I cannot see how there could be no romance and he could all of the sudden be cold and uncaring to you...

They don't price the expansions DLC on time played in DA:O/Cost of DA:O. It simply wouldn't be profitable. Your saying you got 55-60 hours for $60. In that case, a 15 hour expansion would need to cost $15-20. If they did that, there would be no expansion, they'd lose money.

I'm probably restating the same protests that other people have put forth in the previous four pages, but I hope there's at least some mention of your past romance. My warden is engaged to Alistair, who is obviously in Awakenings to some extent, and it would just be weird if there's no mention of that at all. It seems kind of sloppy. Hopefully the information from David Gaider turns out to be true and there will be some acknowledgment of the romances from the original game.
This won't stop me from buying the game, and I'm 99% certain I'll still enjoy playing it, but this information is a big let-down.

The only reason why we don't have dwarven romances is because then no one would want to hook up with Alistair or Zevran otherwise. It's true.

No Romances.
Oghren is the one returning, and becomes important.
And the characters look like cheap knock-offs so far.
Awakenings isn't looking to be worth it.
