Yes, but I would have liked to import my ultimate sacrifice ending character and its choices and sacrifice carry over and be an inspiration referenced to by the orlesian warden you use and the new recruits you get.
I don't read anywhere where this still isn't possible to do - it said:
"
If a player wants to, they can import their "Dead Warden" into
Awakening and play as them. For the story it's assumed that they didn't
make the ultimate sacrifice, instead somehow survived. A player would
start as the same level with the same gear as their "Dead Warden".
Essentially, if a player doesn't have a problem hand-waiving the story
in this regard - neither do we."
To me, this reads as, "If you decided afterwards that making the ultimate sacrifice sort of sucked and you had a lot of fun playing as your Warden, if you're willing to engage in a suspension of disbelief regarding how he/she managed to live through facing the Archdemon, we don't have a problem with it either and will let you do it."
The option to make an Orlesian Warden and continue on with your original Warden being dead is still there.
I actually think this is a pretty smart decision on their part. People become attached to their characters, even after making the sacrifice and this is giving them a free do-over. It doesn't hurt anyone by allowing it, and if said player just wants the Archdemon to be their character's swan song, then they still can. Remember, it's you, the player, making the choice about which character you import. You don't have to select dead_warden_sacrifice01 save if you don't want to.
"
Players can also choose an advanced option to choose a specific save
game instead of the most recent save game for that character if they
desire."
So it can even be a save prior to the Archdemon being dead. Just somehow the Archdemon gets dealt with (maybe if you choose that, Riordin took care of business like he should have in the first place, rather than forcing me to make a devil's bargain with a swamp witch).
