If I look at how the Awakening expansion is build up so far, it looks like they wanted to continue the story without actually continuing the story... What I mean with that is they provide new companions and no new romances, nor do they let old ones return, this to me indicates that they wanted to keep the expansion more or less seperate, so that when they do continue with the core story (with that I mean our main companions etc), it doesn't matter if you played this expansion or not... Had they allowed you to continue with the same companions in this expansion then things around those characters had changed and then it could cause a problem for those who did not play the expansion... It looks a lot like they will pick up where they left off with our NPC friends in DA2 or in another expansion pack (most likely DA2 however). I guess the story is also just a sidearc to the core story which will (most likely) be continued in DA2.EccentricSage wrote...
If this is an expansion, then what happens after it?
You mention removing things, I'm assuming you're talking about the DLC items, because the relationships are basically still there you just don't actively get to act on them. DLC items are no real issue if you look at continuation. Whether you need to have played the expansion to import your save into DA2 I do not know, however looking at the way Awakening is build up I would say they will probably support DAO and DA:A savegames.
And the romance thing, well consider still being with your romance of choice but in Awakening you're just on a business trip. And in Morrigans case you just took a momentary break from tracking her down!
If you're right, then that's all well and good, but entirely half-assed. :-/ If it is going to be a game with a sence of continuity as they add to it, then I would expect there to be more insentive to buy dlc and expansions than a few hours gameplay. These things SHOULD have some efect on the future... there should be some recognition in the future of the past, and some benifit gained from bothering with it. I just love how in an ongoing rpg they're making not mere sidequests but entire blights that are avoidable by merely not purchasing it.
This mix of too much dlc without enopugh reward+ overpriced expansion packs seems like it will take a good and promising new franchise and reduce it to a glitchy, over-priced, miss-matched patchwork of optional content. I'd rather wait a hear or even two and see them put out a sequal or chapters to the storry that are more epic than the first instalment and actualy cohesive. But I guess we'll see how this new age of dlc and incomplete games plays out. Seems like a moneypit I wouldn't want to invest in.
