If this is an expansion, then what happens after it?

If I look at how the Awakening expansion is build up so far, it looks like they wanted to continue the story without actually continuing the story... What I mean with that is they provide new companions and no new romances, nor do they let old ones return, this to me indicates that they wanted to keep the expansion more or less seperate, so that when they do continue with the core story (with that I mean our main companions etc), it doesn't matter if you played this expansion or not... Had they allowed you to continue with the same companions in this expansion then things around those characters had changed and then it could cause a problem for those who did not play the expansion... It looks a lot like they will pick up where they left off with our NPC friends in DA2 or in another expansion pack (most likely DA2 however). I guess the story is also just a sidearc to the core story which will (most likely) be continued in DA2.

You mention removing things, I'm assuming you're talking about the DLC items, because the relationships are basically still there you just don't actively get to act on them. DLC items are no real issue if you look at continuation. Whether you need to have played the expansion to import your save into DA2 I do not know, however looking at the way Awakening is build up I would say they will probably support DAO and DA:A savegames.

And the romance thing, well consider still being with your romance of choice but in Awakening you're just on a business trip. :) And in Morrigans case you just took a momentary break from tracking her down! ;)

If you're right, then that's all well and good, but entirely half-assed.  :-/  If it is going to be a game with a sence of continuity as they add to it, then I would expect there to be more insentive to buy dlc and expansions than a few hours gameplay.  These things SHOULD have some efect on the future... there should be some recognition in the future of the past, and some benifit gained from bothering with it.  I just love how in an ongoing rpg they're making not mere sidequests but entire blights that are avoidable by merely not purchasing it.

This mix of too much dlc without enopugh reward+ overpriced expansion packs seems like it will take a good and promising new franchise and reduce it to a glitchy, over-priced, miss-matched patchwork of optional content.  I'd rather wait a hear or even two and see them put out a sequal or chapters to the storry that are more epic than the first instalment and actualy cohesive.  But I guess we'll see how this new age of dlc and incomplete games plays out.  Seems like a moneypit I wouldn't want to invest in.

I still can't enter the site Posted Image keeps taking me to front page of Bioware's site. But I can handle the no romance thing (even though I wanted Anders for an Orlesian warden Posted Image) and so glad to hear that last ingame romances will be commented on Posted Image

Why did we pay for the dlc, if in the expansion all the Special items are going to be taken away? This seems to be a very poor thought out plan by bioware. And does make me think twice about buying anymore furture dlc. -100 approveale rateing for bio ware.

Does anyone know (mods or BioWare person) how many MS points this we be if we decide to go the DLC route? And yes not allowing DLC items is a serious mistake.

I like most of what I'm seeing so far with Awakening but I would have liked to see romances in the game. The site said that the characters are focusing on dealing with the new threat but nothing brings people together like a crisis! We had romances during a Blight so that's not a real reason. And I dont understand Oghren being a main character. He didnt even have that much of a role in DA:O. I'd rather see Leliana or even Morrigan instead. I guess Alistair would work too. And I dont want to lose my Starfang! Well, hopefully there are even better weapons/items in Awakening.

I guess the new spells/talents may help make up for some of this. And I hope that the PS3 version wont have long, unexplained delays come 3/16. Overall, though, it looks good so far.

I ended up not using any of the dlc weapons or armour because it made the game a lot easier than sticking to the main ones, so I am not too bothered about that. I would like to see some romances though. I agree with lightstryker, war does bring people together. I mean I just finished reading the two dragon age novels, and even when surrounded by darkspawn in the deep roads people are having relations in the dark!

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, What? No romances? Leaving your previous life? So your saying that, well for me Alistair was king, but It said I was the face of Fereldan, so basically when I shimmy on over to Amaranthine no one will recognize me as Chancellor? I'm confused.

Also, one of my characters married Alistair, are you saying that when we get Alistar as a companion in Awakening, (yes we all know its Alistair), he won't remember that my character was his wife?

Or what if you make a new Warden and he wants to get his groove on? I didn't think you could do it Bio, but you let me down, now I'm a sad panda. :(

The no DLC thing is also quite lame, but acceptable as new gear will be got anyway.

-Just a harcore Bio fans two cents.

I guess we will just have to wait for more information. It may well be that our worries are unfounded. Even so, it might be better to think of the expansion as less of an expansion and more as a small game on its own? Less disappointment and more interest. I for one can't wait to get it. Once it gets put up on amazon for the ps3 Ill be pre-ordering it :)

For console players yes it does tend to render the DLC fairly pointless, so aside from the fact PS3 will never get the RTO DLC (let's be realistic bout it) now they basicly tell us "hey don't waste your $5 on that DLC, it won't mean jack in our new $40 expansion~! suckers!" fantastic.....

Though th pros & cons of this expansion is weighing unfavoribly for it, as i've said the companions better be phenominal to justify this stuff, ALOT of people cared bout that, if we the player can't romance them then they better hook up with each other or sumt'n thanks to our playing match maker/micromanagement

first I was like "wow an expansion 4 months after the original released this is gonna kick ass" but after I read the FAQ and it says that DLC stuffs won't carry how disappointing is that what the point of spending money on the DLCs?....first Return to Ostagar delayed now this...I'm totally have no problem with waiting for another year or 2 for something like "Dragon Age: Origins 2" (I waited like a month after original release and I got free The Stone Prisoner and Blood dragon armors totally worth the wait) instead of this expansion. like what the hell you can't even carry "Red Steel" Cailan's Armor Set (sarcastic) to the expansion!? sorry, I'm gonna add $20 to my $39 for this game and get FF13 instead..........<_<

I don't like the look of the new FF at all and wouldn't spend my money on that. I love the bioware stuff, and bought the dlc content mainly for the gameplay rather than the items. I like seeing the new areas, and meeting the new npcs etc and exploring generally. Until RtO comes out for ps3 and Awakening I think I am going to turn my attention to the toolset on the pc version to occupy my time. Yes, I am that sad, I bought the pc version just to play with the toolset lol
Awakening looks great from what I can see of it.  So much new content to explore, and new baddies and everything.  Totally looking forward to it!

I haven't tried playing a warrior yet in the Dragon Age: Origins. Being a Rogue or a Mage and using the DLC content hasn't really "improved" my characters armor or weapons. Yes my companions have enjoyed all of the downloadable stuff, but *shrugs* I'm not going to be heartbroken about not having it carry over. Besides... the DLCs were for Origins. I'm looking at Awaking as a new enviroment. Frankly, I'm not expecting to play Awaking at level 21 either. Can't rightly use Starfang at level 1 :)

As for the romantic options and companions, I frankly though of them as side entertainment to the story or an inventive new way to role play decisions and consequences instead of who do I have to kill to get what I want. I think if Bioware can suprise me once with that kind of creativity, I'm happy to sit back and await any other suprises they might have to offer. After all, we aren't talking about Life Insurance here. Like reading a good book, I get to choose how to enjoy this game, not how to write it.

This is shocking. I love Bioware, but this is EXTREMELY disapointing and totally unlogic.

One of the funniest things in a RPG is to build up a character with great epic gear. When a RPG gets an expansion the most natural thing is that you start up with the gear you collected and even paid for earlier. For me: to lose the Warden Commander set is very sad.

I hope anyone from Bioware can give a good reason for this. For now it sounds like lazyness. I hope you wont destroy the fantastic Origins-game with rushed expansions.

Also disaponted that the romance is gone. Was a very important part of Origins. However - if the romance still lives in the background it is not so terrible. Really hope it will be possible to import alle gear though. All fans should push Bioware here.

Dragon Age is - in my opinion - the best singleplayer RPG ever. It is fantastic, and I cant believe that I have played a 60hrs game 3 times. Then again; it would be sad to see this masterpiece destroyed with a rushed expansion.

Btw: Hope there will be a new patch for Origins soon. The story bugs at the end of the game if you chose to not make Alistar king are terrible. How many times do they call him king even if he is not?

Quite the whinning already. Your imported BG1 character lost all his gear in BG2, and IIRC, your imported BG2 character lost all his equipment in BG2 expansion (not sure about this one though). Same thing for NWN2 and SotB. Bioware can easily find a reason to explain it, or to reset gear without taking all your "character building" (given how "character building is lame in DA:O, that would hardly be a killer anyway).

The romances in DAO are silly as hell. Even worse than cheap Hollywood romance. It's pathetical that you can get the 3 available romances to tell you they want you without even trying after 10 hours of playing. Ridiculous. Please take them away and bring back the old BG2 romances. Safiya (whom DAO devs made fun of several times) is way better than the 4 romances of DAO added together.

You want to know whats worse? Coming to a BIOWARE site and trying to get a simple question answered about MS points and the expansion and the BIOWARE people ingore you.

And I'm really surprise about how many BioWare fans refuse to call them out on the problems that are already appearing for the Awakening. Thankfully GOTY Fallout New Vegas will be out this fall.

That's sooooooo not the point, at least for me. I don't care for gear much. Can't import it, fine. But the thing is the players are NOT in equal circumstances. Those, who don't use DLC, just import their PC fully geared and ready to fight. But those who do lose half or all the gear. And need to go search for replacements... it's not a small thing assuming that your PC is level 25 and enemies are corresponding. Looks pretty much like punishment for DLC users. That's the part I don't understand. You either import ALL the gear, or NONE. Or only what's on the PC like it was in the NWN2 Mask of the Betrayer.

Awakening is an expansion and will be retailing for about $40.00. We should expect an expansion and a continuation of OUR storyline in it. Bioware is the one that stated (paraphrased) 'it will be large, players will be very happy with the length.' I enjoy the combat tremendously, however the single most important element of DAO was the interpersonal relationships with the companions and the storyline. This is what players want, read the countless posts. If the game is set to be about 20 playable hours and we will have no romance/flirting options during this time it will be disappointingly BORING. Humans have emotions and enjoy having this option in the RPGs they play. If you don't prefer this element being there, play an FPS.

This is a valid concern. However, the person I quoted only cried because Bioware was ruining his character development by not allowing him to use his WK gear.
This is an outlandish claim given that:
- it's more or less the common rules in RPGs that you lose all your gear with a new episode or expansion
- character building in DA:O is extremely lame to begin with.

That said, it is indeed retard that players who don't own DLC's get to keep their stuff while players who bought DLC's are screwed over (even more than they thought at first when they realized they payed ~25$ for 1h30 of content). Bad bad move.

Who cares if you brought DLC or not. ALL items or no items should be what transfers. Still that one reason I buy DLC is for the better gear. BioWare however has basically said FU to those of us who brought all their DLC because none of it is usable in the Awakening. I honestly do not understand what is going through BioWare's mind.

This is where I am coming from. I love character development, and the romances in games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age is one of the things that makes it fun. Without romances, Mass Effect wouldn't have ment so much to me.  That is the only game that I feel close to and cannot even make another Shepard as it is weird hearing another person using my voice! Back on topic though, romances are what makes your games as fun as they are, the more options the better IMO! Sure the story is wonderful and the fighting is great, but knowing that after the fight I get to go back to camp and get to try to seduce my parter of choice is what made me play for hours and hours on end! They make the player feel more involved with their companions and an actual part of the world! Romances are needed!
