Mass Effect 2 - Steam version
Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit
Direct X 10.0
AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE (stock speed)
4GB RAM
ATI 5770 1GB (Catalyst 10.1, driver 8.69-091211a-094918C-ATI Soundmax Integrated Digital HD (ADIHdAud.sys [6.10.2.6600])

Problem Details
ME2 crashes during combat. The crash is consistent: hold down the SHIFT key to click an ability on the toolbar at the top-left of the screen and the game will freeze and crash back to the WIndows desktop. This can happen at random times, sometimes not for hours, sometimes during a particular fight.
I play the game on Hardcore mode, and the only way to get through some long fights without a crash is to lower the difficulty to Easy, then I don't to pause the action so often with the SHIFT key, and so the crash doesn't happen.
I have tried the following: updated BIOS, all device drivers and chipset to newest available (as of Feb 13 2010), disabled Sticky Keys in Windows (just in case. am clearly desperate).

Help Bioware - love the game, hate the fact I have to nerf it just to get through a combat phase (and let's face it, combat is what this game is all about).

Hmm. Try running game in compability mode for Windows XP. If doesn't work try going back to earlier drivers. You will need to clean out registry maybe and delete all ATI driver folders as it can be a pain in the arse. Try disabling some options in your catalyst control center.

Update: Have hopefully found a fix. I re-mapped the pause actions key from Left SHIFT to Left CTRL and have not had a lock up in hours.

Can other people with the same issue could try this and see if it works for them too?

PS - Realmjumper: the game runs fine apart from the random crash during combat. I'm not sure what benefit compatibility mode will give?

I have had the same issue on two different motherboards one with an nforce chipset and one with an amd chipset as well as two different video cards, one ati and one nvidia. I will try remapping, had thought of it but for some reason never got around to trying it, here's hoping it works.

Tried remapping to Alt, still crashed while holding it and clicking a power on hotbar.

Yes, this was one of the "fixes" I tried to solve my own issues with incessant ME2 crashes during combat (detailed here: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/1187560).  It did not work.  I am beyond frustrated with this game.  I am not a techie and have spent far too much of my time to try to get ME2 to work properly.  I hope Bioware addresses this issue soon because right now I am out $60 and am not happy to say the least.

Same issue. Thought updating my catalyst drivers fixed it but I just had it happen again. Some of these battles take me a long time to get through, sucks dying after spending 15-20 min in a fight (Tali on Haestrom). With all the issues we had with the first Mass Effect I though Bioware was done with sending out poorly QCed games. Patch please.
