I have the game saved after each--destroying it and not destroying it.
Which is better?
This is my first time through the game--so not sure.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Gameplay wise, keeping it is better so you will have 4 Golems in the Final Fight. Story wise... it is what your character is more like, we will see what imapact it has on awakening

Pick either one, finish the game, start a new playthrough, pick the other one next time - problem solved.

If you can't decide what to do first, flip a coin (yes, I'm serious).

It really is up to you. You do get some golems for the last fight if you save it. No matter who you choose for king, Branka ends up basically keeping the Anvil for herself and going quite bonkers. It's better for the dwarves in general if you keep it though, their power continues to erode without it but they will also eventually build a new one even if you do destroy it so... ah, the illusion of choice =D

I won't go into the details to avoid a spoiler, but the only good epilogue for the Dwarves requires destroying it. The Dwarves can potentially retake a massive part of the Deep Roads including several Thaigs back in the epilogue with the right choices. If you think about it, it is pretty obvious which ones it is if you know you need to destroy the Anvil.

Gameplay wise, I really wouldn't bother keeping it just to have the golems in the final fight. Maybe if you have a really ranged based party they might be good, but you should have, at a minimum, the Dwarves and Redcliffe forces anyways.

I remember reading a post some time ago that I thought was very apt concerning the anvil. Don't you think that it is a bit contradictory how you destroy the anvil by hitting it with the very hammer that the anvil itself was built to be hit with to forge metal ? lol

To the best of my knowledge, there is no effect on Awakenings or DA2. That means that so far, all we have to go on are the epilogues of DA:O, and the epilogues where the Anvil is preserved are pretty gloomy.

If Branka works with Harrowmont, he allows her to raid the surface for fuel for it, and that leads to a short war with the surface; presumably this means Ferelden. On the other hand, Harrowmont doesn't die shortly into his reign in this ending. Still, I think the bad outweighs the good even more than in Harrowmont's Caridin-Ending.

If Bhelen and Branka work together, Bhelen works with Branka, providing her everything she needs, and eventually alienates her by insisting that he be allowed to control all the golems they make. This leads to a short civil war, which Bhelen calls off when he realizes that Branka is too powerful to neutralize. Adding this to the fact that Bhelen doesn't need golems to prosecute the war against the darkspawn more effectively than had been done before, I think that the better choice under Bhelen is not to keep the Anvil.

Depends on what "better" is supposed to mean. If better for the player, no, there's no 1 pt of Con to gain or Reaver specialization to unlock or anything. If you kill Caridin and appeal to Branka's lunacy, you get a very few golems with which to fight the final assault of the game in Denerim, but otherwise it's just a roleplay decision. In terms of better regarding the epilogue, what riverdaleswhiteflash and others on the thread have said is generally true: Branka and the Anvil go together like children and pedophiles, and both the Bhelen and Harrowmont endings end up worse. The Bhelen ending actually bodes well for Orzammar though with the Anvil destroyed.

True also what one poster said: always seemed kinda odd that a huge golem could pound away on it for centuries but could never break the Anvil, but a squishy just has to smack the Anvil once with a regular mallet (something it's designed to withstand) and poof- rubble. Ah, plot devices...

I sided with Branka once and from then on sided with Caridin. So, saved it once, destroyed it from then on. I would not like to be trapped in a golem body.

Ten feet tall and invulnerable? I can think of worse fates.

Ten feet tall, not-so-invulnerable, brainlessly servile, and bound as a disembodied torture victim to the Anvil forevermore... seems slightly worse... and more accurate. But it's not a choice for the Warden, alas. Gosh, if only we could give ourselves over to Branka's insanity that way...
