They need to put a warning label on the box. I haven't slept in days.

Great game! I have the graphics maxed 1920x1200 - I think it looks nice. I like all the dialogue and lore, but that's something I've come to enjoy in Bioware RPGs. I love how very few things are straight good or straight bad - I like making tough choices and then sticking by them. Makes me think of the Witcher (another great game). The voice acting is awesome. I like the characters - usually there's one character that I find overly annoying and so far the characters I thought would be annoying have turned out to have interesting back stories!

Its hard though! I want to put on easy, I really do, but I've made it 35 hours into the game and I'm just too stubborn. Some battles I have to control every step of my characters or they wipe in the blink of an eye! :o It also feels like I use every trick I have to survive sometimes. The tactics system is nice (reminds me of gambits in FFXII) but battles can go south so fast that I don't rely on them completely.

very much agreed. I do have to wait for ME2 until I can say that this is indeed the best RPG yet, but I think I will play this more for the story than ME2

The last best RPG I played was Final Fantasy XII on PS2....Dragon Age is still not as good.

DA does have without a shred of doubt THE BEST voice acting ever in a game. Simply awesome - cut scenes rarely capture the movie-like experience and DA does it even better than Jackson's Lord of the Rings Trilogy..

I've never really played wrpg's, it was mostly Japanese, but I have to say, this is one of the best rpg's I've ever played, from either camp. KOTOR is still my favourite Bioware game though.

I have to disagree with you guys about the voice acting though, it's nothing special, doesn't stand out over any other game I've played this gen.

I'm almost through with my first playthrough and I wanted to stop and say that this game is the best fantasy RPG that I've ever played -- in every way that matters most to me. I give this game an unqualified 100. I've never thought I'd see an RPG come down the pike that didn't suffer from the repetitive interaction syndrome -- you know, when NPCs run out of things to say, and the majority of the game is just running around completing quests from a list. I was 2/3rds of the way through the game before I ran out of interaction with Alastair. The story was so interesting, and there was so MUCH interaction with EVERYONE that I wasn't pressed to keep talking to my party to keep it interesting for me. I just...played...and when I thought to click on a party member, there was always something new to say! I'm just amazed at the story depth and the depth of interaction. This is true role-playing in the best sense of the concept.

I compare DA:O to Fallout, Oblivion, Fable and Assassin's Creed and there is no comparison. Although Bethesda makes these long, open ended-type games, the NPC interaction is so minimal and canned, and the dross that you have to muddle through makes the game a tedious obsession. I've never played a Bethesda RPG more than once through, because by the time I finish the first playthrough, I'm just completely and utterly bored by the monotone interactions, and the thought of actually starting again from the beginning makes me shudder. Fable is the same, in its own way, and always feels to me like a game where the developer had a string of cool game innovations that were worked on to the exclusion of the overall story and playability.

I think DA:O concentrated on the best parts of the RPG experience, story, choice and player interaction with NPCs. I don't miss being able to walk off cliffs, swim, or having to micro-manage the weight in my backpack. I don't miss being able to free roam over endless, monotonous countryside with its claim to fame being realistic leaf movement. I don't miss tediously collecting junk.

DA:O wildly exceeded my expectations. I can't wait to play it again. I'm so engrossed in the story that I'm not even concerned about the quest list. I simply move through the story, knowing that the next time I play I'll have a completely different experience. I don't know how to criticize this game. It's like being in the middle of a movie.

Bravo Bioware! I sincerely hope that Mass Effect 2 can uphold this incredibly high standard of playability.

ETA: Ditto on the warning on the box for causing lack of sleep. I haven't slept in DAYS. I went to bed at 5 AM this morning. The other night I was so tired but wouldn't stop playing, so I decided to...lay down and play at about 3:30 in the morning, and promptly fell asleep. At least the controller was still in my hand when I woke up. Saves time that way...

This game is just so much fun and has such an epic feel to it. ...

I fully agree. I wrote the following in another thread (I'd have posted it here if I'd known about this thread beforehand):

I've been playing CRPGs since the early 80s' on the Commodore 64, and
I'd say that there are fewer than 10 CRPGs that I'd consider to be
classics. I think Dragon Age: Origins is one of them.

Very
rarely do I play games that feel so polished like DA:O: Technically
it's very good (with respect to audio, music and visuals), the
presentation is excellent and the gameplay itself is very smooth. But
more importantly the game has a lot of depth (as I'd expect from a
CRPG developed by BioWare) and a strong, interesting narrative that
draws you into the game. I also like the dark, epic overtones of the
story and its inspiration from Lord of the Rings and George R.R.
Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire (one of the best fantasy series ever).
Games such as Oblivion and Fallout 3 failed to draw me into the game
like DA:O did.

I also think that the GUI is very well
thought-out and the controls feel good. Although I had some problems
after installing the patch, it was resolved the same evening and I've
had no other technical problems with the game. It's been very stable,
something I don't take for granted these days.

Keep up the great work BioWare! I also look forward to Mass Effect 2 in early 2010.
