My gaming PC broke (just stuck with my macbook now :(), and I was wondering whether or not I would be able to play my character on my roomate's computer, if I am able to pull some files off the broken computer's hard drive.

However, my roommate bought the game on Steam, and I bought the retail DVD version.  Another issue is that my character is using the Blackhole big gun, which my roommate does not have.  So assuming I can somehow transfer my character files onto his computer and get it working with the steam version of the game, would I be able to, say, log into my Cerberus Network account on his version of the game to have the Blackstorm work (after installing the appropriate files of course)?

Thanks for any assistance!

First of all to salvage your savegames you'll need to copy the following folder:

Documents/Bioware/Mass Effect 2/Save

The saves should be located in the exact same location on your friend's steam install and you can just add your saves to his folder.

Regarding the DLC, this is where it becomes tricky. You cannot use your existing saves unless you install the Blackhole gun (as well as any other DLC you had installed on your own PC that your friend doesn't have). Basically you have the following two options, with different consequences:

- If you don't install the extra DLC then you will need to start a new game from scratch because it won't let you load your current saves.

- If you do install this extra DLC on your friend's steam game then your friend and you will both need to use YOUR account login to keep playing both of your saved games, because if your friend tries to log in with his own account it will see that he doesnt have the permissions for the Blackhole gun and he won't be able to continue playing. Also his existing saves will probably become permanently associated with containing the Blackhole gun DLC, so he won't be able to access his existing saves without using your account, which would be a problem if you go back to using your own PC and you want to play simultaneously.

Because of this I highly suggest you talk this over with your friend before doing anything. You could literally botch his save games and if you only plan to use his ME2 install 'temporarily' until your own PC gets fixed, then it might be less painful if you start out with a new game. You could always port the 'new game' back to your own PC later as the basis for a 2nd playthrough, at least provided your friend doesn't have any DLC installed that YOU don't have.

What happened to your computer exactly? Fixing it might not be too hard.

You'll also want to move your profile file from Documents/Bioware/Mass Effect2/BIOgame/profile if you want to keep your achievements up to date.

I don't think this bit is necessarily true.  I made the transfer (thanks for the input Miriel Amarinth and rockx4!) and my roommate has Inferno Armor installed, however that does not seem to affect my character at all and the armor simply does not appear for me to choose.
