 Fable 2
Drage Age
Fallout 3
Shadow Hearts 2

ok I just put Shadow Hearts in there because I couldn't think of anything more recent but dogs aren't really fun game companions. In Fallout 3 he just died all the time so I just kept him in my apartment at the tower.  In Dragon Age it just stayed at my camp while I used more interesting characters. In Fable 2 you're stuck with it but it's kind of useful because it's always finding stuff. Also Shadow Hearts 2 kinda sucks the first one was much better even with it's outdated gameplay

Dogmeat from FO3 was actually even in Fallout... And Fallout 2 (which actually had another 2 robot dogs that could join you).

I can't speak to those other games, but in Fallout 3's case it was mostly tradition. There was this dog companion in the first Fallout called Dogmeat that became a fan favorite. Then he returned along with two other optional dogs in Fallout 2. There was even a dog in Arcanum; a CRPG made by Troika. Troika's staff comprised a few of the old Fallout designers. So having a dog in Fallout 3 is kind of a treat for fans of the series.

Other than that, I got nothin'.

Edit: Ninja'd. Ninja'd bad. Gotta learn to be less verbose. :P

There was a trick to finding them both. In the first game Dogmeat only accompanied you if you had leather armor on at the time. In Fallout 2 he was located in a random encounter area and was pretty easy to miss.

I guess because it's 'cute'. Dog is always at camp for me in DA:O as well. Everyone else is much more useful and actually interesting. Dog is just dog. No dogs in Awakening please!

As for Fable II...haven't played it but it looks rather redundant watching my brother play. Why have all those hidden treasures if dog just instantly finds them for you? Am I missing something?

Need a quite high luck to find that area too. For the two other dogs, Robodog is found in NCR... but I don't quite remember how to make him follow you... K9 (canine :P ) is in Navarro. You can get him by killing his old master (the doctor in the same room) and by adding it an engine you can get in... one of the containers on the ground floor of Navarro itself.
Tactics didn't have Dogmeat directly, no? I think there were dogs to recruit, but not Dogmeat.

In FO1 you just need to wear a leather jacket or give him an iguana on a stick.
In FO2 was a random encounter you have to wear your Vault 13 jumpsuit and speak to him, he will remember the Vault dweller from FO1 and join you.

Glad I am not the only one who noticed all the dogs popping up in rpgs lately. Also Fable 3 is confirmed to have a dog just like fable 2. Fallout: New Vegas also has a dog.

iguana on a stick also works in the random encounter.

speaking of which, let's not forget the Pariah Dog, which couldn't be let go, and gave you the Jinxed trait. and had 800 hit points. and joined your party if you got too close to it.

Beat me to it, I was really happy to see him return in FO2 and have him in my squad too, then I made the mistake of taking him into the mines under Redding, the wanamingos werent the problem, but Marcus in close quarters with his chaingun ripped Dogmeat into well dogmeat. From then on out I'd only bring him if I knew there was little risk of him getting ripped apart.

The single sleeve leather armor(Mad Max) outfit worked for me in FO2

What would the world be without long winded explanations?

Anyways, dogs have always been horse-shoed into the role of "man's best friend". Video games love stereotypes ("Cole Train", much?) and make regular use of them. Ergo, dogs in roleplaying games.

And they're cute and fuzzy :) And petting them lowers your character's blood pressure...

It would be a world where I wasn't ninja'd. XD My english lit professor used to tell me I had a nasty habit of getting carried away. She was right. I've never been able to shake that. Maybe it's a byproduct of practically being mute in real life.

People like dogs and they're easy companions to code for. Almost no inventory or conversation.
