This is a dumb question so bear with me. You trigger a conversation with your squad members after each mission. But I've noticed Ihat I sometimes get a convo for no apparent reason, usually between my first and second post-Citadel mission, while I'm doing a bunch of sidequests. I think it's based on level but am not sure.

I have found that there are six times you need to go around and talk to your squad: before visiting the Citadel, after taking command of the Normandy, twice between your first and second mission planets, and twice between your second and third mission planets. In the times where there are two conversations available, I don't know what triggers the second. It might depend on doing specific assignments, or a certain number of assignments. Some of the later conversations are only available if you've done the "favor" assignments (Wrex's armor, etc.) It seems like Garrus runs out of things to say quicker than the others do.
I should add that I always do the main planets in this order: Therum, Feros, Noveria, Virmire. The conversation triggers may be different if you do the planets in a different order, but I would assume there are still six of them.

I recall reading it's a fixed number of UNC assignments that will trigger new conversations, counting just like one main mission.
