Well...I suppose the somewhat overshadowing feeling of disappointment in this forum at the moment stem from too big expectations by DA fans.

Most fans wanted a reunion with their favorite NPCs, a continuation of the story, closure to loose ends -they simply wanted DA:O to continue...like what ToB did for BG2.

Instead it looks like we will be getting deluxe-sized DLC. You know, polished content but somewhat detached from the mainquest/-world.

I guess that realization doesn't sit too well with most.

Well to be fair, we're just holding them to the standard they set. I guess it's a bit of a double-edged sword.

But see you're talking about a comparison between full on sequels. Mass Effect to Mass Effect 2, and Baldur's Gate to Baldur's Gate 2. This is Dragon Age: Origins to it's own expansion pack. This isn't Dragon Age 2.

My point was that this isn't the first time BioWare has bent continuity for the sake of story and\\or gameplay in a continuation, and it won't be the last. Although at least Baldur's Gate II had satisfactory explanations for characters "returning from the dead". Awakening will just pretend that you didn't die, but that begs the question how will that plot element be ignored? Will it make it so that you agreed to undertake Morrigan's ritual?

Either way I'm not bothered by this. You'll probably get the option to play as the Oralis Warden even if you're importing, anyway. If this is indeed an option then just go with that if you prefer your original character sacrificing themselves.

To be honest I don't recall specifically what you're talking about in Baldur's Gate. Who returned from the dead?

But yeah I get your point. Mine was simply that they did not break that continuity in an expansion pack. It's one thing to have to tell a whole new story sometime in the future and to make a few assumptions that certain specific choices were made, and I'm OK with that really. I was just expecting something that took place in the middle of the story like with Tales of the Sword Coast.

Ohwell I guess. It's my own fault for assuming.

DLC being gone sucks for those who paid for it. Doesn't seem fair since this is an expansion of the original game.

Romances gone is what I hate just because it was fun to try and "Woo" another character and added more personality to them. Not to mention it was 1 of the things that gave DA:O it's charm.

Fans of the original want new stuff added and not stuff taken away. Especially to dish out 40 bucks for an expansion which seems overpriced to me, but being a fan of DA:O I was probably going to pay it.

However with the recent announcements Awakening went from being an automatic buy the first day to waiting to see what all is in it first and I wouldn't be surprised if others felt the same way with the recent announcements.

Just had to throw in my 2 cents

Except this "deluxe-sized DLC" is completly incompatable with all previous DLC.

Well, sadly, I've gone from a "will definitely buy" to a "will wait and see" on the expansion. It seems a bit lame that the DLC I paid for can't be incorporated, but in reality, new gear for higher levels would replace that stuff fairly quickly anyway. And I can see them not wanting to incorporate references to DLC because it would be out of place for people that hadn't played it.

What really changed my mind was the choice of carry-over companion and the decision to not let previous romances continue. I found Oghren to be a bit one-dimensional and not all that interesting. He's one of the few companions I just wasn't interested in, so having him be the only choice in an expansion is just disappointing.

Even more disappointing is not being able to carry on the relationship my character had with Leliana. It was a major part of the story of my character and now he just dumps her somewhere to go off adventuring alone? Having no new romances doesn't bother me at all - I was interested to continue the story I'd started. In that respect, I'd be less disappointed if they'd just made a completely unrelated expansion where you started a new character. Now I'd play my character from Origins, all the while missing my old traveling companions and wondering why only the drunk stayed with me . . .

I had such a good time with Origins, I'm leaning towards just letting the story end there and letting Awakenings spend quality time on the store shelf.

Just Ignore him. That will make things easier for the poor dev/mod who has to go through all his posts for the clean-up.

Pretty much every returning character in BG2 can potentially die in BG1, and there's dialogue to reflect this. For example when you meet Edwin during the Shadow Thief questline one of the first things you can say is "Edwin...aren't you dead?"

True, but it's not like Edwin gives you any kind of meaningful explanation. He sort of shrugs your question off and it's never mentioned again. I also believe you were able to save a certain witch in BG1 for Minsk, but in BG2 she was dead by default...

I can understand why romances don't carry over. After all, every character you can romance can die and/or leave permanently. A lot of work would need to be poured into explaining what happened with each romance post DA:O origins... work that should be spent on new content.

I don't understand what's the deal w/ items, though. There must be some technical issue involved, since it seems there's no logical lore explanation.

I feel disapointed about the expansion too. I played through the game once and got a happy ending and then I heard about the expansion and I thought yay like my epilogue said I'll get to go on more adventures with Alistair and we will rebuild the grey wardens together. I made Anora queen instead of Alistair so my Dalish elf could have a happy ending and not just be the kings bit on the side.
And I think she makes a better queen anyway and wants to be be ruler more.

Then when I heard Oghren was actually the returning character I was like WTF!?? It should be Alistair, he's the one that would want to come with me and help rebuild like my epilogue says and he'd be able to since he's not king in my game. My story isn't continuing like I thought it would :(

I don't want Oghren to be my companion instead of Alistair. I hate that fact and feel really disapointed. I don't hate Oghren, I just would rather have Alistair than that stinky dwarf.
I feel like it's broken the story, don't know if I want to play the expansion now. If I get really bored I might but what's the point in playing my character?? If the story is stuffed. I may as well make a new Grey warden and the game is no longer unique and just another generic RPG that doesn't really continue.

It seems like any game EA gets their hands on gets stuffed.(Such as Sims 3 and Earth and Beyond) Games are good until that company joins in. They end up introducing lots of dlc to try and make extra money. I think they will make new dlc that you prob can only use in the expansion and no where else. EA is kind of like Herren from Wades Emporium.( The guy that's more about profit than making a quality product)

Ohgren is hairy dorf that with big feet. How much fun could he be, his wife left hom to live in the deep roads with the dark spawn and another woman?

Romances not continuing to the next expansion is one thing but to eliminate them from the possibility is quite another. It was a nice feature in the game that added to the immersion of Role Play. Wake up and smell the beef and bean burritos Bioware and EA your customers are talking to you!

In Brankas defense, it was Ohgren who made her that way!

This thread seem out of touch with reality, theres David's post on the matter. They havent eliminated romances just put them on *hold* for this expansion/adventure^.

As for Oghren, well lets hope this expansion marks the very end of the character either that or we can kill him easily look on the bright side.

If I leave out an ingredient it in this cake but plan to put it in the next cake, it is still eliminated from this cake.

Just regarding those asking about the romances, by "not continue" it just means you don't have a chance to actively continue the relationship during the course of this adventure. It does not mean that you mysteriously broke up or that the romance is not recognized to exist. I would have liked to have cameos by everyone, but that simply wasn't possible. As it is, you may find some treats awaiting you -- recognizing past decisions can be done in small ways, as well as large (and this applies to things outside of romances, as well).

This post basically says umm nothing!

Depending on the ingredient, that could be a pretty nasty tasting cake, one that costs $40 and robs you of $27 of content even.
