I'm wondering, they said there will be no romance, but does that just mean the player won't be able to get in a new romance, or will we see a romance between two NPCs?

Who wants to see that? Well I guess since my PC will be forbidden from having a love-life than I guess she needs to resort to 'watching'.<_<

Indeed... I really think I'm going to perform a solo run...

Well.. It seems like they found the way to displease most of the users (and I said MOST, not ALL.. don't attack me now...) with this xpac...
My only hope now, is that they would read what people are writing eveyday in this forum and that they will take this into consideration when they will have to make decisions for future games and expanions.
I'm not saying this game will not be good because we haven't played it, yet.. But I can say for sure that, however this game will be, it will not be what many of us wanted or hoped, and this is the truth...

The game probably will be very good; every time I watch the 1st Awakening trailer I get very excited. I cannot mention enough how fantastic the voice-acting is in this game. HOWEVER, knowing that the best elements of the game will not be an option is just too disappointing. Could they not have just included something really phenomenal such as: showing your Royal Wedding to Alistair/Anora (if you went that route) in the beginning of the game, with a bit of romance before you run off to do your duty? My epilogue ended with us having a lavish wedding 6 months later, Alistair showing everyone in Ferelden how much he loved his new bride ...blah..blah. Throw us a bone here, let us relish in our story a bit before sending us off to 'do our duty'. It really would have been nice to be able to have the 'kiss/sleep with' option with Ali at a few points during the game, instead of non-at-all. Very disappointing.

I agree. Especially considering that this expansion supposedly takes place six months after the first game. So wouldn't that technically be just after your wedding? I mean, give us some newlywed action at the very least. :)

It's strange, isn't it? You can import a character that survived DAO and continue the story - but some essential elements are missing e.g. the dog - this would imply that you are not meant to import a surviving warden.

On the other hand you cannot import the choices of a warden who made the ultimate sacrifice.

So whom is the addon meant for? Is it meant to continue the story of a surviving warden or is it meant to be continuation with a new warden? To me it seems that both is not the case.

When I heard they were already working on an expansion so soon, I was thrilled, because I figured it meant they were adding in more origin stories, like a human commoner, or a surface dwarf, or an apostate mage for example, and new landsmeet preparation quests along the lines of A Paragon on her kind, The Urn of Sacred Ashes/The Arl of Redcliff, Nature of the Beast, and The Broken Circle.

Me too. I agree with you about the new origins. I would have very much liked to play an apostate mage - those Templars just ****** me off at the tower. And think of the back story to that origin that could be done. It could be anything.

This means to me just one thing... It's just a Stand-Alone/ Optional adventure... Not essential to have, or better, not essential to be bought immediately...

But see you're talking about a comparison between full on sequels. Mass Effect to Mass Effect 2, and Baldur's Gate to Baldur's Gate 2. This is Dragon Age: Origins to it's own expansion pack. This isn't Dragon Age 2.

I don't know, Like said earlier I'm sure the expansion actually will be fun. I'm simply (badly) disappointed that they're not doing their expansion the way Baldur's Gate did it. I had gotten my hopes up for new origin stories, new landsmeet preparation quests, new cities and dungeons and new characters to include with all the old ones.

As was I. Ferelden is big, after all, and Thedas even bigger. I personally think we should move into other countries where there are Grey Wardens, not just Ferelden, but that's my opinion. And I would also like to be able to go back to Highever someday.

I can understand why romances don't carry over. After all, every character you can romance can die and/or leave permanently. A lot of work would need to be poured into explaining what happened with each romance post DA:O origins... work that should be spent on new content.

I don't understand what's the deal w/ items, though. There must be some technical issue involved, since it seems there's no logical lore explanation.

What is this talk of party members dying? I've never had that happen. Someone fill me in here.

This thread seem out of touch with reality, theres David's post on the matter. They havent eliminated romances just put them on *hold* for this expansion/adventure^.

As for Oghren, well lets hope this expansion marks the very end of the character either that or we can kill him easily look on the bright side.

If I leave out an ingredient it in this cake but plan to put it in the next cake, it is still eliminated from this cake.

Depending on the ingredient, that could be a pretty nasty tasting cake, one that costs $40 and robs you of $27 of content even.

Metallicka is really ticked about his DLC. Again I say to the game maker gods--Wake up and smell the disgruntled flatulence of your customers!

Why wouldn't I be? I bought the $75 Collector's Edition, not for the map or the metal case, both of which i could have lived without, no I bought it for exclusive in game content. I preordered, again for content, I played Journeys which I hated and would otherwise have left alone, for content, and last but not least, I payed $7 for Warden's Keep, and $5 for Return to Ostagar. I suppose it can be argued that I got my enjoyment out of that stuff, but when I bought Shivering Isles, my Wizard's Tower didn't disappear.

Very true. Your Wizard's Tower remained in Shivering Isles. Which I was thankful for.

It surprises my how much EA is blamed for what people are disappointed in this expansion. EA doesn't write the story, or decide that only one companion is returning, and its the dwarf that almost no one cares about - its all Bioware on that. I am one of the many that are rather disappointed with what will be missing in the expansion, but let's put the credit or blame where it belongs, on Bioware.

I was excited to hear about Awakenenings, thinking I could continue my adventures with some of my beloved companions, but my excitement is pretty much gone. And Gaider's comment that "you can't just actively pursue" your romances in Awakenings just means nothing. Let's say I live in San Diego, then take a job in San Francisco. I tell my girlfriend that I'm moving for work, I'll be busy so don't bother coming with me, calling or writing - we can still be boyfriend and girlfriend, we just won't actively pursue our relationship. We can pick things up again when/if I move back to San Diego. Yeah, that'd go over well.

lol No, I don't imagine that would go over well at all. Interesting analogy and well to the point. :)

I got the impression that the romance stuff wasn't very well received critically, especially not the erotic parts. I'd think romances aren't an easy thing to develop, and when critics mostly either completely ignore the romance aspect or even mark the game down for those sex-scenes, it might not feel very tempting/rewarding spending time and effort there - especially now with a new type of story that wouldn't necessarily even work very well with romances.

Myself, personally, do not, and have NEVER cared about what critics have to say - about movies, music, games, anything. I value my own opinion and opinion of the fans over theirs. People like my own sister - who I kid you not, will only see movies critics deem "worthwhile" over her own opinion - just need a smack upside the head. Think for yourself.

However, I think our hosts should seriously consider the amount of flack they're receiving on the issue and act accordingly on future expansions. I would think the goal of selling more games would be best served by providing what the players desire and it's evident that romance opportunities are a significant part of those expectations. Assuring continuity of events and actions would go a long way in assuring repeat customers.

Don't worry... I am sooo anxious to find Morrigan in my game. I know darn well she's in luv w/my character, & don't know how to deal w/her emotions. I want to confront that & find out what came of my kid is it normal, good, evil, a mutant?!?! (My guy is head over heals for her! lol ) There are sooo many ways the story line could go with the decisions my Character made w/ Morrigan it is unreal!

I, myself, don't care for Morrigan. I never did trust her from my first playthrough to the present - though, I will not lie, watching her do the deed with my man Alistair when I accepted her ritual the first time made me a little sick to my stomach and has since made me dislike her more - but I was surprised at how nice and almost vulnerable she was with my guy when he romanced her. It was a little surprising. Though, it gets overshadowed by that scene with Alistair for me. Blech!

Can I just say how much I DESPISE that turn of events? That the only way for you and Alistair to survive so you can be together in the end is to have him sleep with another woman and give her a child, which your girl can't have with him? It REALLY bothered me. That was one part of the Dragon Age storyline that infuriated me beyond anything I thought possible, real life or no.

I bit disappointed myself when I heard that there will be a new team.

I played the game about 10 times so I will probably move to a new game soon, the expansion is not inspiring me as I don’t see the point of an expansion with different people.

It would be better to create a new DAO2 game with a different warden and different team.

Not sure if I will use the expansion, depends on how good FFXIII is.

I am wondering that maybe you can't start up "new romances" in Awakening for a reason?
Maybe it will complicate/interfere with current/existing romance & choices you made in DAO when DA2 comes out?...
I still believe that your current choice in relationship will reappear in DA2 or a future game
Personally am the faithful type/ hopeless romantic who's character stays with one person in my game & have no desire to frolic in the field w/ someone else... but that is just me. :)

I've got a question for those of you who were NOT involved with or flirting with Lilliana, but involved with Morrigan, Allistar, or Zev... Did Lilliana creep you out at some point of the game & seem sorta "psycho stalker/delusional" ???
In my game I was nothing but a friend to her, Never told her she was beautiful or gave here any false hopes of a romantic relationship.. I was just a nice guy to her..., however I did give her gifts just as I did everyone else. All of my crew that mentioned a specific item they got it gifted to them.Anyways, I only flirted w/ & had a romantic relationship w/ Morrigan & there came a point in my game where Lilliana was freaky & all the sudden loved me & didn't want to see me w/ Morrigan but w/ her & acted like I was cheating on her w/Morrigan!?!? I was like wtf. Anyone else get freaked out by the bard too??
Just curious.

A little bit, yeah. My guy was already with Morrigan and just friends with Leliana and she seemed to get a little possessive. When I played a girl too, and I was with Alistair, I made it clear that we were just friends but then when I would be out in the world with her and Alistair in my party, she would disapprove of my girl kissing him in front of her. She wasn't even at Interested or Care or anything anymore, just Friendly.

Winkie doodle Karmianna? Oghren didn't do that to me but yes Lelianna got uber jealous of my relationship with Zevran when I wasn't romancing her... I think you can accidently romance people, though, because somehow Alistair got upset, too. Everyone wants my elf... But seriously, I romanced them each in other playthroughs, so I thought I knew how to pick just friendship choices, it only takes one wrong answer to switch them to love interest.

Everyone wanted my little Dalish Elf girl too, very early on. Even when I wasn't romancing Alistair yet, he inquired about me and Leliana and me and Zevran. He was going to get her in the end anyway...because, let's face it, total hottie...but it was weird to have everyone coming at me all at once when I didn't even encourage it as of yet.

I agree w/ SecilyL.. the romance aspect of DAO made it heads above the rest of the RPG's I've played. Hands down! :) I loved everything about the game except Shayle. Her personallity was little to be desired. Sorta like here..a stone. lol ;)
As far as ppl complaining about the romances being put on hold.
I fully understand how your character is like you in a game. I am soo into my character & the storyline, friendship & romance soap opera like part of the game it borders on obsession, so says my husband... It is like these characters become a part of you.
However..This is an expansion, not a direct continuation like DA2!!!
However...until I get the chance to find here, there are soo many things just waiting to be killed & loot to find :)
All I am saying is....Patience people patience!
Have any of you ppl that are soooo mad ever considered that this expansion could be just a stepping stone in the story leading to a more complex bigger world/story line in the future of DA2, for your character, your companions, & romances, from DAO?
I think all this getting mad over there not being romances in this expansion is just silly!
There is sooo much to the story line/game yet to be told.

As far as DLC, I have all them & enjoyed playing them all. I'm not mad I can't take it w/ me in the expansion, There is nothing saying you won't beable to access it in DA2. :)

I don't think any of our opinions regarding romances are based on how much or little we identify with our character/s. Sure, there are some Alistair followers that it may be true for. I for one don't really identify with my dwarven woman. I am certainly not short and sturdy. I am not as bold as she is and I haven't met the love of my life yet. She is her own person with her own ideas and views, somewhat affected by what Leliana thinks of course. I feel sorry for my dwarf if she had to endure a fellow dwarf that I dislike, and two bizarre mages - one with anger management issues - and not be able to relax in camp with the love of her life.
Also, for you to imply that relationships are not a large part of the game ... that is silly. It may not be a huge part of Ferelden's story but, depending on the person playing, it can be a huge part of a character story. To have it whisked away with whatever explanation BioWare is adding is not on the positive side of my Pro and Con list.

...

Bob3terd said things so much better on page 19.

I just cancelled my pre-order of Awakening - and have no plans to purchase it at any later date (unless I see it as a $3.00 special either at GoGamer or Amazon - and then only maybe).

While I own just about every title BioWare ever put out (as well as more than my fair share of BioWare DLC) - I'm going to be very wary about future BioWare/EA titles, and am definitely NOT going to place any kind of "pre-order" again. I'll do without until any new BioWare/EA title has been released and a few, reputable reviews have been written up.

From a recent preview (I think on Gamespot) it appears that the true intention of the expansion is to view these new events from a fresh perspective -- a new Grey Warden.  The import a character option appears to be the result of a flexible story, perhaps?

Either way, I think the expansion will likely be more of a long side-story not meant to have a major and lasting impact on the franchise. I'm sure the expansion will not be nearly as successful as the game and I doubt Bioware would want to include too many Awakening-specific elements in the Dragon Age sequel.

With that said, I'm getting this expansion because I can't get enough of this game and its world.
