Sentinel is good as well. He struggles early on but becomes a tank later in the game

Sentinel and Engineer are the only classes i've yet to play, think i'll give Sentinel a try

im planning on giving all of the character classes a chance on insanity to see what is the best character class to fit my play style

If you use the class right, all of them are capable of completing an Insanity run. Pick the class that you feel adapts to your preferred style of play.

I've tried all the classes on insanity a bit (up to Horizon), and the Engineer has been the best combination of strength and fun.

Exploding drone is incredibly awesome because of its ability to distract tough enemies. I'd call it easily the best class specific ability for insanity, being able to control even the toughest enemies even when they are fully shielded using drone distraction is amazing. That plus the rest of the engineer abilities offer great combinations of AOE damage, protection removal and crowd control, especially incinerate to burn armor and damage and panic organics & overload to destroy shields, and stun mechs and overheat weapons. Plus even cryoblast and AI hacking have good uses even with only 1 or 2 points in them. Chuck in AP ammo and you are rocking. Plus, since you have many versitile abilities you aren't just spamming one, so it is very fun.

Tbh distraction/cc are pretty pointless factors in this game; the quickest way to do an insanity run-through is just to pick a class that gets the Widow, so that narrows it down to Soldier and Infiltrator with Soldier arguably being the better class. Not only that, but the quickest route also happens to coincide with the easies route. By the time an engineer preps to launch a drone a soldier or infi will have ripped at least 2 head off with minimal effort. That having been said: pick one of the aforementioned classes for ease/monotony or pick a vanguard for a challenge + fun factor.
