I was just thinking that Lyrium is an interesting name for DA's "magic mineral" and is a term I'd never heard in fantasy before and I got curious how Bioware came up with the name.

well ly is a latin base sound that a beginning word for spirit, and rium geek pro-sound for focus, so putting the two together, spirit focus, ly-rium. thats why I love the lore of dao, it has these cool references, I wasn't surprise lyrium connects you to the fade this magical substance, the word pretty much tells you. And Of course I'm pulling your leg, I made that crap up I have no idea what it means lol, though I'm going to say I'm with the lithium batteries on this one. energy

Not sure about the name, but both Maria Caliban and NoAngel89 make good points in that regard.

As for the stuff itself, maybe it's just because I'm reading Dune at the moment... but can you say "Melange"?

I believe it comes from the word "lyra", meaning the Greek musical instrument.

Taken from the Lyrium codex entry:

"For in its raw form, lyrium sings and the discerning can hear the sound even through solid rock."

Well spotted! I should read more codex entries. It sounds like the devs have just stuck the 'ium' suffix from metallic elements onto the end.

Indeed, the word makes me think of words like "lyrical" or "lyre" or "lyrics". All music terms.

I'll play until my fingers bleed.

So, that's like, what? Fifteen seconds?
