case any of you wonders if it's just a random name - aparently it's not. I hope nobody posted this erlier, would end up me wasting time and posting a compleate failure toppic, istead of just mildly failure one. And before you ask - yes - I had nothing more interesting to do at the moment so I decided to INVESTIGATE!

IT'S RESEARCH FUN TIME!

Nazareth:
In the New Testament, city is described as the childhood home of Jesus, right now it's the the capital and largest city in the North District of Israel.

Biblical and extrabiblical refference:
"Nazareth" assumes several forms (Nazara, Nazaret, Nazareth, Nazarat, Nazarath) in surviving Greek versions of the New Testament. Of the twelve appearances of the town's name in the New Testament, ten use the form Nazaret or Nazareth, and two use the form Nazara. Nazara is generally considered the earliest form of the name in Greek. The form Nazara is also found in the earliest non-scriptural reference to the town.

Orgin of the name:
One theory holds that "Nazareth" is derived from the Hebrew noun ne·tser, meaning branch. Ne·tser however is not the common Hebrew word for "branch," but one understood as a messianic title based on a passage in the Book of Isaiah. However, the negative references to Nazareth in the Gospel of John suggest that ancient Jews did not connect the town's name to prophecy. Alternately, the name may derive from the verb na·tsar, "watch, guard, keep."

RESEARCH FUN TIME END (anyone who want to research more - the wikipedia article I used as refference is HERE.

Damn you bioware, not even names are simple in those games.

If you want to learn more, interesting theories and speculations about Sovereign, Harbinger, Collectors or Reapers in general or want to share your own opinions on the toppic - join in the Reapers group

Did people not realize the similarity, or something?

The instant I heard Nazara I realized the Nazareth connection.

In-game, however, it's probably just a name.

Its a story made in the West. Of course its going to have biblical relationships. Its just a universally known idea in the west is has great influence good and bad.

Obviously a character name is very important especially of the antagonist. Each reaper is given a name of their task or goal. Sovereign is the magistrate of the reapers return. Harbinger is the decide what things are to come. Likely Harbinger is a "spiritual leader" of the reapers.

On a side note - my goal in this wasn't to explain what Nazara means, it was already obvious that Sovereign was a guard, It was just pure etymology boredom.

Good read! I'm glad to see Bioware doesn't just slap random names on major characters. This adds a feeling of depth in the storytelling for me.

Western cultures dont have as much lore as japan of china. So it's rather hard to think of something. Theres not a lot of originality these days.

Yes of course, I recognised it fairly quickly too, though I believe the name is more significant than just being a name:

Nazareth is the path to salvation, as is Nazara (and Harbinger) in Mass Effect.

MAKE. ME...A GOD!

Yess, even more biblical references in Mass Effect! I missed those so much. I really had fun looking up words and references while playing Xenogears some years ago. I'm glad some developers are doing that again.

Anyway, that's a very nice find! It sure makes you think. If the name may also derive from "watch, guard, or keep", maybe the reapers are meant to protect something from someone?

"Gefühl ist alles, Name ist Schall und Rauch." - Faust, der Tragödie erster Teil (Johann Wolfgang v. Goethe)

Basically meaning "Emotion is everything, name is noise and smoke."

What I mean is: Wouldn't read too much into it. It's easy to slap open a famous book, pick a random name and try to figure out some connection/meaning. Metal Gear Solid is full of that stuff and none of it means anything. If they name other Reapers Dante, Hyde and Holden, they're still just Reapers and what the Bioware writers make of them.

Actually, it is likely that the name is relevant to the story. Literature games are fun.

They could have called the Reaper Hans and it would make no difference. Unless the Reaper IS the bible, or god, or a Christian prophet.

Yes they are, but writers tend to name their characters meaningfully. Consider:

Shepard: Is surely going to be the shepard of the galactic efforts against the Reapers.
Lazarus Project: Lazarus was the Ressurection of Christ, our saviour. Shepard is perceived as being the galaxy's saviour.
Legion: Obvious.

Another example might be the Matrix:

Neo: New; shows a new One.
Morpheus: God of dreams, sleep and awakening; awakens Neo to the real world.
Merovingian: Hades; Lord of the Underworld in that he authoratively deals in the program underworld of the Matrix.
Persephone: Bride of Hades; obvious if you've watched the films, she's the partner of the Merovingian.

etc. I could go on and on. I realize those examples above are a different trilogy but they're just one of literally thousands of examples of literature writers naming their characters in appropriation to their relevance and role in the plot.

There are lots of references in ME and they are not only whimsical connections but actually named appropriately. Nazara as a name is no coincidence, especially as the meaning of the name is very similar to what Harbinger continually preaches throughout ME2 (in addition to the revelation of the last boss).

I'm a little out of touch with the new testament, being an atheist the last 20 years or so, but wasn't lazarus someone resurrected by jesus, rather than being a reference to jesus?  My admittedly rusty memory is telling me so.
