Why? Why have games declined in difficulty so very much? Is it to attract a newer audiance, or did people b1tch too much?
I noticed this when playing Mass Effect 2 on insane, beating it with no problem, and then hearing about how so many thought it was "IMPOSSIBLE!!!!"
I then looked at games today. Mostly sequels, they are so much easier than older games. Look at Halo 3 Legendary to Halo 2 legendary. Or look at F.E.A.R. 1 to F.E.A.R. 2(They removed the hardest difficulty level from F.E.A.R. 2.) Or the new Call of Duty games, Veteran is a breeze now. Does anyone remember CoD 2 Veteran? (With the exception of WaW because its just a nade spam fest)

Games are no longer challenging anymore. I have to start every game on the hardest difficulty from the beginning in hopes ofr finding a challenge, but no avail. The only game I played which I actually had to play through once before until I could play on the hardest was Dragon Age, and that was just to get used to the gameplay.

I am not saying make games impossible here, just make harder difficulties availabke for those of us who like challenges, facing seemingly impossible odds and then the utter feeling of victory afterwards.
Frankly, I think one of the reasons games are so easy now are achievments. There is usually one to complete a game on its hardest difficulty, and if alot of players get too frusterated to finish the game on that difficulty, the players get p1ssed and complain. Just give achievements for the second hardest or something.

I just miss games that possessed an actual challenge...

if a game is to hard I get bored and frustrated then quit playing. Life is challenging enough as it is. I like easier games they are more fun to play and I will play through them more times. Besides games are expensive and spending 60 bucks on a game you can't beat sucks

The days of Nintendohard gaming are long over, yes. It used to be I would pour all my time into a game until it was over. Now nothing short of boredom keeps me from finishing any random game. Oddly, I completed almost every game I played in the 8 and 16-bit eras when they were much harder. My ego demanded I kept trying until I won. The only ones I didn't finish were the odd rental I couldn't reacquire for some reason or other.

Problem is, some people don't find this fun. I can't blame them either. Games before had a tendency of being little more than veiled memory tests. It was all about noting enemy patterns and acting according. Gameplay was rarely so deep you needed any sort of strategy. In fact, strategy was usually an unnecessary detriment for anything that wasn't an RPG.

As the focus keeps shifting towards prettier graphics and cinematic presentation, I don't see it ever returning to how it was then. As Faust1979 illustrates above, more and more people want to be entertained, have fun, and move on. Not tear their hair out trying to best an annoying level, or leaving areas incomplete because they're too hard. On occasion a game that bucks the trend appears, but those are usually geared towards an older or hardcore audience. I don't think it's achievements alone. The audience has and is changing. It's more a sign of the times.

Because they are more open ended now, and cater to tastes of all kinds instead of forcing everyone down a linear path.

Natural consequence of the emergence of the casual gamer. If you spend less than 5 hours per week on a game and these without any progress because you can't get past a certain mid-boss, then you'll be looking for a new hobby before the month is over.

Of course, that is no excuse for the omittance of an actual "insane difficulty" setting. This, like Doc Bacon, I will blame the Achievements for. Not necessarily the Unlockable Achievement system, but the belief of some players that something is wrong if they don't (or can't) finish every aspect and every difficulty setting of a game.

So you want to return to games like Chakan or Ghouls & Ghosts? No thanks.

I am quite young and have never experienced these really hard games. Frankly, I know that I would get bored quite quickly. However, when it comes to online play, the learning curve should not consist of 3 skill levels like there are today. It should always be possible to get better, and it should always be hard to get Good.

The first time I picked up COD4 (No way I'm even glancing at MW2) I scored highest on the server. And I'm barely a decent gamer. That. Is. Sad.

I like games to be harder just to challenge the intellect more.

Well most people use gaming to relax and get rid of stress i think that might have something to do with it.

Don't discount the fact that as gamers we grow in experience and become better at gaming, making what was once a difficult game much easier.

Myst series have not aged that well, truth be told. Still, I enjoy 7th Guest and The 11th Hour a lot; but the "formula" is terrible outdated.
