What did Howe mean by his final words? And is there a backstory for him?

Also, is there anything in the novels that explains why he's such a psychopath? Almost every other bad guy in the game seems to have somet complexity or something in his background to explain his behavior, but there doesn't seem to be any motivation (besides greed) or any nuance to Howe's character.

you learn about it in the library by the old man in the noble origin...something like Howe's family used to own it or something and it was given to the couslands..or something like that.
but that's all it was..he just thought he deserved more...to what limit who knows..more land? more wealth? kingship? he was power hungry

IIRC Howe's family first sided with Orlais during the war then backed Maric in the end but the Couslands had to sieze their lands. I also seem to remember that the Howes were pretty important at some point, but the details escape me right now.

Well, 30 years. About one generation if you are generous.

The blights were just a clever scheme for the Couslands to rise to power.

The Couslands are clearly pro-warden (wardens keep) so they had to die.

Are we certain that the Couslands are pro-warden?
We know that the wardens went to meet with them but got ambushed by the King's men. It doesn't say that the whole meeting wasn't a trap

Your right it is generation's being under Cousland's thumb when technically it should of been the Howe's. It says in the codex that: The outpost of Highever was originally held by the Elstan family, cousin's of the Howe's. In the Age of Towers, however, Bann Conobar Elstan was murdered by his wife, (none other then our wonderful) Flemeth, thus ending the bloodline. Conobar's captain of the guard, Sarim Cousland, took the lands and title.
So basically when Howe says he deserved more he's talking about what he thought should of been his in the first place, Highever. But in those day n ages (Ferelden) if you weren't strong enough to hold onto it regardless of blood then it was taken from you from someone who was stronger n that happened to be the Cousland's who have hung on to it after all those years, centuries. Even though Howe tried to take it away you still get it back in the end because your able to kill Howe once again proving who the strongest was that n with some help from King/Queen lol n with Fergus still alive

You didn't get the conversation with him where he said something like "There's that look. The same look in the eye of all the Couslands who have passed me by over the years." He basically is tired of living in the shadow of Highever's teyrnir. Amaranthine is an arling of Highever, so he's somewhat of a vassal of the Couslands. Did you notice how he was groveling about his troops being late, when you first see him in the HN origin? That's because it's appropriate for him to grovel. Back under the Orlesians, they all were living on the run and in the rough, but since then, he's been reduced to giving obeisance to his old companion-at-arms Bryce Cousland, and well, as he says, he thinks he deserves more.
Highever use to be part of Amaranthine but the Cousland's when they got it fought their way out by starting a 30 yr war n when all was said n done the Cousland's had won their independence, plus had gained half of the southwestern part of Amaranthine. Once again showing how strong they were.

Your right, they fought for it, won it n have held on to it after all these years. It definitely belongs to them.

Still, I remember a scene in Joan Vinge's, "The Summer Queen" where a man has tricked The Source (the most powerful crime boss in the galaxy and the man who murdered his wife) into drinking a slow-acting poison and the Source begs him for an antidote, telling him that he'll give him anything. He replies that he wants his wife back. It would have been fun to try and trick Howe into bargaining for his life as though you might actually spare it, only to demand that he bring back your family.

Hah, that sounds like "The Princess Bride" with Inigo Montoya telling the six-fingered man to beg him for his life, to promise him whatever he wants. The six-fingered man complies, and Inigo says, "I want my father back, you son of a b****."
On topic: I think the folks above me have the right of it. Howe resents the Couslands, and he's willing to do just about anything to get what he thinks he deserves. The sadism...I think that's just a product of the resentment.

This is from the wiki:
[...] Although he was decorated for valor by King Maric, Howe’s abrasive manners have earned him almost universal dislike among his peers. He has two children, Thomas and Delilah.
