What did Howe mean by his final words? And is there a backstory for him?

I fourth all the other opinions. Tim Curry is awesome!

Just played through this and he says "I deserved more!" If he means, he deserved more punishment, I certainly agree. And they had the torture chamber so conveniently located to the site of the battle, too!
Also, is there anything in the novels that explains why he's such a psychopath? Almost every other bad guy in the game seems to have somet complexity or something in his background to explain his behavior, but there doesn't seem to be any motivation (besides greed) or any nuance to Howe's character.
What origins did you play? Cause I saw what he met since I played a human noble.
Since the human noble is a Cousland, which is one of the two teyrn familys in Ferelden making them powerful. I guess Arl Howe has always been overshadowed by the Couslands, and never gets the titles and glory that he thinks he should.
So basically, he wipes out the entire Cousland family expect you and Fergus. You find him, kill him. Goddamn I hated Arl Howe. I think I hated him more then any other character in the game. The ugly big-nosed smartmouth. Even as he was dying, he was still a ******.

Oh man! I didn't realize it was THAT Tim Curry. (I haven't paid attention/looked up the voice actors, other than to go, WOW the voice acting is GREAT!)

A bit off the main topic but I recognized at least 4 voice actors in addition to Curry.
Claudia Black: Morrigan (wondefully funny Australian actress from Farscape and SG-1)
Kate Mulgrew: Flemeth (Janeway from Voyager)
Tim (is it Russ? He played Tuvok on Voyager): Zathrian
And Kath Soucie who does TONS of voice work on lots of different animation stuff. (shes the voice of Phil and Lil on the Rugrats show) did Marjolaine. I recognized her right off because one of her first roles was a French woman on a show in the 80s called Jem and the Holograms.

Eamon says of him, "He always did seem the kind that liked to kick stray dogs."Sabriana wrote...
In the codex under characters (naturally) it says something like "Howe is disliked by nobles and commoners alike." and it also had some interestingly negative things to say about Howe's grandfather (or was that father?).
I wonder if we will ever come across Thomas or Delilah elsewhere, like seeing the consequences if the Cousland warden strips them of title.

I was very disappointed that I did not get to kill and rape his wife and daughter (preferable while he watched)
Yikes!
I only thought about strapping him into one of his torture devices, cutting off his fingers and toes slowly 1 by 1, than slowly slicing his face and body with a dagger, cutting off his tongue, ears and eyes and then ripping his traitorous beating heart from his body and showing it in his mouth.
Why didn't you let me do it Bioware? WHY?!

I do wonder why Arl Howe is such a psychopath though. His grandfather and ancestors seem to be nice, pleasant, and decent folk. His children are decent people too (Though I do wonder why Nathaniel Howe replaced Thomas Howe).
BTW, what's Howe's reaction to the Cousland Warden saying he's going to kill Howe's family?

he is unimpressed with your threat and proceeds to "show you how its done" describing in gory detail the fates of your family (whether its true or not I don't know) I much prefer the "intimidate" option when you give him "the Bryce Cousland" glare and he almost wets himself.

One say to the other that the Chantry offers a reward to any people that would assist to the funeral of Rendan Howe since that even his family decline its presence.

Having seen a couple of psychopaths, I know the accuracy, and torturing people (and animals) for fun is *just* the sort of thing psychopaths do, if not worse. Howe is far more multidimensional than given credit for usually; not often do you see mental illness or aberration such as that played out with such stunning result and reaction from all who encounter him in ANY game, even BioWare's.
So, next time you play out a HN, take a look at Howe from a new angle; check into psychopaths, talk to a doctor or nurse about signs, symptoms and behavior. Howe is an amazing example. I applaud the job, but I ask you not to write Howe off as a two-dimensional character with no depth and only one goal (and being a "two-bit villain"; he's not). Like everyone else in the game, he's got depths that are not easily seen, and some facets of this hidden gem may surprise everyone.

I overheard a conversation about him (i think in the gnawed noble) in which one noble said to another it would have been better if he died in the war, because thats when he truly did die.

He saw his father and his own troops die before his eyes at that bloody battle of White River. Where the Chevalier massacred his father's troops.
