I must stop being a lurker, because this is absolutely befuddling me. I'm trying to get Shepard dies ending, so to improve my chances, I'm trying to eliminate off as many party members as possible before the suicide mission. I know that I could simply not talk to Zaeed or open Grunt's pod to not have them as party members, but I read on masseffect.wikia.com, that it is possible to have Zaeed and Grunt die outside the suicide mission.

For Zaeed, supposedly, if you do his loyalty mission and save the refinery workers, when Zaeed gets trapped, you can leave him there to die. I've tried every dialogue choice and different levels of Paragon and Renegade points, and I can definitely get Zaeed's loyalty, but I can't get him to die.

For Grunt, supposedly, if you open his pod and botch the dialogue options, you shoot him dead, instead of convincing him to join you. Again, I've tried all dialogue options at different levels of Paragon and Renegade. Again, can't get him to die.

I'm playing off an imported ME1 character. Despite having the Renegade ending complete with assault rifle and red planet at the end of ME1, the importer said the character was a Paragon instead of a Renegade. Does that have something to do with it? 

So what do I need to kill them off?
