The thing about squadmates with automatic weapons is that they often expose themselves for longer periods of time compared to semi-auto weapons like pistols, shotguns, snipers, etc.  The AI tends to pop out, fire a few shots then go back to cover.

However, that isn't to say you shouldn't ever use automatic weapons for your squad.  They are definitely useful when you want some help taking down enemy shields/barriers.

Thats not why she is suicidal though. Its beacuse a SMG is considered a short range weapon so she will try and get close. Squad mates with AR tend to stay alive just fine.

Also, the new Eviscerator makes shotguns useful in the hands of NPCs.
Finally, the "I don't need it" argument is kinda weak. Technically, you don't need anything. It's perfectly possible to solo ME2 on Insanity without using any squadmates. The question isn't which squadmates are needed (none are). The question is, which squamates are useful and in what ways.

AR is still better than pull and eviscerator.  Pull is superfluous

If I want a shotgunner, I want one who can survive and who can melee

S Tier - Miranda
A Tier - Grunt, Jack, Zaeed, Garrus, Samara
B Tier - Tali, Legion, Thane, Mordin
C Tier - Jacob

Miranda is tops. No explanation needed.

Grunt, Jack, Zaeed, and Garrus all share one thing in common: Squad Ammo Powers
Squad ammo is amazing. Even if your character is already using their own ammo power, having your other 2 squadmates access them allows you to tear through enemies even faster.
Grunt is nearly impossible to kill and carries an assault rifle, Jack'/Samara's Pull is on a super short cooldown(Sentinel + Jack or Samara = strongest, fastest warp detonations every 3 seconds with upgrades), Zaeed and Garrus carry sniper rifles so they do some heavy, safe damage from the afar, and Samara has access to Area Reave(on a 6 second cooldown with upgrades) and also carries an assault rifle.

Thane's shredder ammo is weak. He'd be on the A list if it was better since he also has access to Warp and a sniper rifle.
Legion may have the Widow, but his other abilities are crap. Squadmate Combat Drone isnt even half as powerful or useful as the Engineer's Combat Drone. Same deal with Tali. Mordin's Incinerate is nice, and he's actually pretty resilient due to increased shields, but his weapon selection and his other powers are awful.

Jacob is completely outclassed by Grunt and Jack.

Anyone feel out which squadmembers simply die more than others? Here's my list and it's JMHO:

Die too easily: Miranda, Jacob, Mordin, Jack, Garrus.

Never die: Grunt, Thane.

I only played extensively with Mordin, Jack, Garrus, Grunt, Thane, and Tali, so maybe the "weak" ones get much better near the end? It seemed to me Jack and Miranda were constantly jumping on top of boxxes and running out of cover because they're macho. I swear when Jacob glitched out and was standing on my head that was the end of it.

the fact that disruptor ammo causes a 3 second total stun on synthetics and a 6 second weapon disable on ANY ENEMY, to me is just as valuable as pure extra damage. Its easier to kill someone when they can't shoot back.

Is it true ? I didn't see mention of it in the description of the power.

Like everyone else, I take Miranda on every mission, unless I'm just shopping. Overload and Warp are just too good to pass up. I take Garrus a lot just because he also has Overload. I'm currently playing as an Adept, so having two sets of Overload and Warp is really helpful.

I also really like Samara's powers, and I take Thane fairly often. I almost never bring Jacob, Jack or Mordin with me. I find with maxed Heavy Singularity, Jack's powers are pretty unnecessary.
