The thing about squadmates with automatic weapons is that they often expose themselves for longer periods of time compared to semi-auto weapons like pistols, shotguns, snipers, etc. The AI tends to pop out, fire a few shots then go back to cover.
However, that isn't to say you shouldn't ever use automatic weapons for your squad. They are definitely useful when you want some help taking down enemy shields/barriers.

Also, the new Eviscerator makes shotguns useful in the hands of NPCs.
Finally, the "I don't need it" argument is kinda weak. Technically, you don't need anything. It's perfectly possible to solo ME2 on Insanity without using any squadmates. The question isn't which squadmates are needed (none are). The question is, which squamates are useful and in what ways.

the fact that disruptor ammo causes a 3 second total stun on synthetics and a 6 second weapon disable on ANY ENEMY, to me is just as valuable as pure extra damage. Its easier to kill someone when they can't shoot back.
