How does this rifle's dmg compare to the starter assault rifle? Would you use this rifle over the starter rifle? What about over the battle rifle?

My squad mates who can use it choose it and I recall something about the best weapon being auto chosen. I used it as my assault rifle the whole play thru also, partially because I have no clue how to tell which weapon is good or bad.

Damage-wise, the Revenant Machine Gun (I think that's what it's called) is much better than the starting assault rifle. The recoil on it is pretty strong as well so either fire it in 5-6 round bursts or make sure to get your crosshair aimed downward to try and counter the recoil. In any case, I've always used this weapon whenever I picked it up.

They're talking about the actual collector's assault rifle.
It seemed like it was a more powerful than the starter rifle and just about on par with the geth rifle at least. I seemed to kill about equally fast with either. As for the vindicator, I think its comparable but plays very differently since it fires in short bursts.

It burns through ammo pretty fast but it's solid weapon.

On its own, it's kinda mediocre. However, if you have Warp Ammo/Armor Piercing Ammo, it's surprisingly good. It has a natural bonus against shields, and Armor Piercing Ammo adds damage against armor and health, making it a very balanced weapon. It has a larger clip size than the Vindicator battle rifle, and, unlike the Vindicator, it's also a fully automatic rifle (Vindicator fires in bursts). It's also much more accurate than the Revenant. I'm not saying that is better than either of them, but it's still a very solid choice.

I prefer it over all assault rifles except for the Revenant.

Damage wise its third in assault rifles.
Technically the Vindicator is the best all around rifle. But I have a hard time using it myself, I use the collectors rifle on my main characters, I like the feel and it really rips through defenses.
But I always equip the vindicator on my squad mates, they use it much more effectively than I do.

I have always used the Collector Assault Rifle until I'm able to get the Assault Rifle Accuracy upgrade, then I switch to the Revenant.

According to a chart on GameFAQS, the Collector Assault Rifle ranks third in damage (behind the Vindicator and Revenant). It's Rate of Fire is also the slowest of all the Assault Rifles. However, it's pretty good with Ammo, much like most of the other Assault Rifles.
Frankly, I think that the Collector's Assault Rifle is the best one until you get the Revenant. Sure, it fires pretty slow, but it's power, full-auto, and ammo capacity are all excellent for a weapon that you can use as soon as you get access to the Normandy's Weapon Locker.
