You'll find dark-skinned people in the nation of Rivain, which is quite a ways off to the north. This far south those of Rivaini descent (like Duncan, though he is half-Rivaini) are fairly rare. Ferelden is analogous to medieval England, which it is a fictionalized version of.

Could we have included more ethnicities? Certainly -- but our intent was to create an internally consistent setting, not to reflect ethnic diversity as it's found in our own world in modern times. You can create whatever appearance you wish (I'll point out you can make your character look old, as well, despite the assumption within the game that you are young) though it's been mentioned before that we might have considered making in-game parents match skin tone/hair color. It's something we'll keep in mind as a possibility for the future.

Hope that answers your concern.

This is why Mr. Gaider is the communities figurehead.

Which is probably just as well, since having any ethnic group with a real world corollary be treated as slaves in game would cause unfortunate implications.

Yeah, it's weird how Oriental fantasy only has orientals. It's like most of these stories came from a time when cultures were still isolated. Wait a minute....

I was actually thinking more of the Earthsea books.

How about the Qunari? I always thought that they look similar to real world black people.

You can't be serious!

I don't understand why not. And before someone misunderstands what I said, I didn't mean to sound offensive.
I think that the bronze skin and cornrow hair are characteristics they share with some real life black people, and they also are very strong physically (once I read that the black race is the strongest physically, no wonder a lot of great athletes are black). But they're not identical, of course.
Off-topic but... I find the qunari similar to black people the same way that in FFXII I find the viera's (Fran's race).

Actually, there were dark-skinned peoples in medieval Europe, though many of them were slaves. Considering that the continent borders Africa and that Europeans had a tendency to explore and colonize and return with their "acquired prizes", it could easily be reasoned that Ferelden could also have dark-skinned folks.

.

There were not many black slaves (if any in most countries) during the medieval period, it is only at the very end of this period that Portuguese and Spanish nations began to explore the to any extent the African coastline. It is only in the early modern period (the renaissance) that European nations became seriously interacting with the slave trade (until then the slave trade from Africa was directed towards the middle eastern nations).  And for England itself it would be be well into the Tudor (definitely well past the medieval period) that slaves would be seriously seen in the nation.

So no, black slaves would not be seen in medieval Europe, the only people of dark skin that northern Europeans might have seen might have been merchants and others from Northern African lands or  the Middle East (such as Arabic peoples and the Moors from Morocco and for a while Southern Spain, until the crusade for re-conquest re-took spain) though this would be mostly in Mediterranean countries rather then more northern nations) or soldiers from Europe participating in crusades.  Simply European nations were very much weaker nations to the more advanced Islamic nations throughout much of the medieval period, and were in no potion to extend grand imperial ambitions over the sea.  So no, seeing as Felerden is based of medieval England/Scotland and not early modern England then it would not be internally consistent to see many races of different ethnic backgrounds in it

I don't see why he wouldn't be serious. I see exactly what he's talking about and thought the
same thing. If you don't see the similarities, then I don't know what to tell you, honestly.

WOW.. whoa, really? Are you being serious right now? I'm white and even I found that very racist and offensive! I would be very surprised if someone (especially the OP) doesn't report that comment! That's not only offensive and very very racist, but was extremely unnesessary!

I thought you actually had done this. My first City Elf looked so much like her cousin that I assumed you were copying settings.

Hell, I did that twice, both my Human Noble and City Elf came out looking like their family completely by chance...

Personally I find cultures more interesting than ethnicity. Having a region or a group of people in Thedas that resemble a real-world counterpart is a lot more interesting than just skin-colours. Also skin colour pretty much depends on the environment around the people, so the ethnicity really depends on the geography of a place as well.

There are obvious similarities. The Darkspawn are angry, physically strong, animalistic, and prone to  violence. There's also that undeserved sense of accomplishment.

WHOA, are you for real? so you believe blacks are "angry, physically strong, animalistic and prone to violence"? You, sir, deserve some animalistic anger up your ass.

Sten's physical characteristics are similar, yes. Myself and one other person on this thread said so just a few posts up. No African American I have ever met (some of my close, personal friends included) are not "angry, animalistic, and prone to violence", and there's also no "undeserved sense of accomplishment". Other than skin color, some facial structure, and hair, African Americans are no different than any other group of people on this planet. Going by your logic (comparing them to Sten and Darkspawn based soley on the racist and stereotypical assumption that they share mentalistic similarities as a race), I would be proned to compare you to a white supremecist ****.

I'm glad BioWare did this, please keep this attitude BioWare and don't put "random" other ethnic people here and there just to satisfy all the Politically Correct people out there as it may affect immersion into the game <_
Though I find it strange Elves sound American, Humans sound English, but both Orlesian Elves & Humans sound French, maybe Orlesian Elves could have sounded Canadian French & Orlesian Humans sounded proper French?

Since they live in Orlais they would have a lot of contact with Orlesians then eventually learn their language. With that they would also likely absorb their language and speak entirely.

It'd be nice if the Dalish elves had an accent, but this would cause problems for PC voices. Edit: yeah, they sound American, but I think that's used as a marker for social class. Common humans also sound American -- or is that Canadian?

Maybe Orlesian elves do have an accent. I wouldn't know a Breton accent from a standard French accent. I figure Celtic is the closest RW equivalent since you've got communities on both sides of the Channel.

Speaking of Orlesians, the merchant in Denerim looked kinda Japanese to me.

The way I see it is you have Ferelden proper as English, I am assuming that the Anderfels will be like Germany, Antiva would probably resemble Spain. The Qunari would be Middle Eastern, or at least in religious outlooks.

From the way that Gaider describes Duncan in his books and how Duncan looks in game I would say Rivaini seem Italian in appearance.
