Whatever you say, Malcolm X. (insert roll-eyes and laugh at you here)
I am black, thsnk you. So obviously I would know what black people look like. In the real world. On earth.
I also know that Duncan is cocoa-colored, and not from Ferelden, two facts that hint at ethnicity. He may be Ferelden's version of a black (or at least, ethnic) man. Unless you're one of the people that made Dragon Age: Origins, which I doubt, you can't know for sure. And again, if you're comparing his "blackness" to African Americans in the USA, then it is you who is wasting your time, because, as I said before, America is real. Ferelden is not.
So please, give it a break. The topic of this thread reeks of fail, anyway.
You're not too bright. Duncan is from Highever which is in where.............wait for it.................Ferelden.
If you think Duncan is cocoa-colored then you are color blind. You keep referring to things as if I am comparing black in the game to black culturally and that is not what I am doing. When I say black I mean black people as in apprearance and nothing more.
You can use the America is real Ferelden is fantasy argument as much as you like, it won't work.
Mass Effect (another Bioware game) was able to show black people in a fantasy setting so you can stop with the weak argument. Duncan is about as black as George Bush. If you think Duncan is black and you claim to be African American yourself I have to wonder about your eyesight because that is utterly ridiculous.
Duncan's is basically a reproduction of Rade Serbedzija. If you don't know who he is then look him up.

In Lothering I think you can find three black people not dark skinned but actually black and they are all members of the chantry. (don't no why) You can believe all this based on Europe keeping with lore stuff it may have some truth to it but at best I think its just a easy out.I noticed the lack of diversity in the game as well the reason we noticed is because we are black.I knew if this was to come up it would be posted by someone black. The same reason you don't see blacks on certain t.v. shows unless they throw in the token. The t.v. shows Im refereeing to are base in MODERN AMERICA. I believe its a situation of made by the for the. People mostly olny address things that involved them directly so most European americas wouldn't notice such a problem becaue they are well represented. Dragon age gets a pass becaue they can hide behind the region of the game reasoning.
I know of the characters you are speaking of and when I look at them although they are dark skinned (which I assume represents black in-game) I just pass them off as something else because the tint of their skin tone just seem off to me. For example the person ranting outside the Chantry to the group of people by the Templar. He is dark, but that guy doesn't look black to me, he looks like he would be from Suriname, but all the same he is the games representation of black all the same.
I knew that starting this topic would being the ire of some people I personally I don't care because I think it would have been fairly easy for Bioware to at the bare minimum make the parents of a black character match the player character.
I understand that this game is based on a period so you can't expect all races to be represented, but I just think Bioware dropped the ball on that one small part in an otherwise world class game. I hate having to make my human noble character and know that I have white parents so ultimately I must be adopted or something.

I maintain that there is no "gets a pass" and no "hide behind." Because there is nothing to hide and nothing that needs a pass/excuse.
Just because a story/movie/game doesn't feature an Asian, or an African-descent, or a Caucasian, it's automatically racist? No.
It depends on the setting of the story.
If the setting of the story is the USA, then if African Americans are under-represented or tokenized, then yes you have a valid outcry.
If the setting of the story is Robin Hood, are you going to cry foul because all the Merry Men are white???
If DAO is a story based in fantasy Egypt, and all the Egyptian nobility turn out to be white, or tanned white ppl, like in old Hollywood movies, then yeah please make yourself heard.
But DAO is a story based in fantasy-medieval Northern Europe. Full stop.

I think it's you who needs to "look things up". Duncan's mother was from Anderfels and his father was from Tevinter. So yeah, you're an idiot. Thanks for making yourself such an easy target for me, though.
I can easily tell Duncan has cocoa-colored skin. If you can't, then you are either color-blind yourself, very stupid, or maybe both. I'm betting on stupid. And yes, you are comparing black in America to black in Ferelden, because when I mentioned that Duncan was black you gave an idiotic response about me not knowing what black looked like, comparing it with black people in places in America. Another one of your bullcrap tactics shot down. Keep 'em coming! Pull!
How Mass Effect shows black people is completely irrelevant, since Mass Effect is a completely different game. So you can't really compare it to DAO any more than you can compare America to DAO. And again, the topic of this thread is fail. It's epic fail, actually, and for two reasons:
1. There is obviously diversity in Thedas, you just made the mistake of comparing the diversity in that world to the diversity in the real world and other games.
2. Who gives a crap? It's a great game, so what you believe is lack of diversity (which in itself is stupid) is completely irrelevant. Gimme a break. Find a hobby. Get a freakin' life.
