What annoys me is the fact i wasn't really warned about it and if it was truly gonna be a literal game over for my particular guys storyline [ of course he's dead, but he obviously had a huge impact on the world and that wouldn't just be forgotten] then I wish i atleast had a warning. I'm kinda wondering how DA 2 will work. Same situation probably, if u used the US then u make a new guy.
Yeah... Dragon Age 2 will be a separate game altogether. Upgraded graphics, gameplay, etc. You won't be able to import your character. This isn't the Mass Effect Trilogy.

How greedy can they be? DA:O sold 3.2 million copies. Times that times the price of the game. They made a feaken mint off this game.
All depends on how much they spent on developping, voice acting and numerous other things that went into DA:O in the first place.
The first year or so for any game its usually where they are attempting to recoup development costs, pay their employees' salaries, overhead (offices, equipment, rentals..etc) and don't forget they are producing dlcs, and this expansion all within designated budgets.
I wonder how much they have made back..if they are breaking even or they have actually made some sort of profit. Would be curious to find that out.
Evidently they can't be doing badly ..if they are still spitting out product as quickly as this.

Yeah, you will be able to import. Can't be bothered to link to a source but they pointed out that the first game was called Origins for a reason.

I don't know if they broke even on Origins itself, if they did it wasn't by much. I'd be utterly shocked if the launch budget was anything less then $80m considering that's just a bit under the average for an AAA title these days, it wasn't like EA was conservative with it's advertisements and promos or anything. 3.2m shipped, they would have had to average $25 per copy which is believable. So profit by the skin of their teeth I suppose, unless that 3.2 didn't count digital distribution in which case Greg and Ray got new yachts.
I'd say the reason you see such a push on content and merchandise is to make up lost ground on the launch title. Which is fine, that's generally what you do with a franchise. Create something big and memorable costs be damned and coup the real profit through other means while the product is still popular and keep it sustained as best you can. So long as the bread is hot and fresh might as might keep pumping out the butter.

I'm curious, is this a fact or are you just guessing? I haven't heard anything relating to DA:O2 or anything beyond Awakening aside from the project due out in Q1 2011, but there has but nothing put out on that as far as I'm aware.

Ok, was just wondering if I had missed some news or something. Not sure why'd transfering from an expansion would be any easier then a full game, it's pretty much the same thing. They did it with ME2, though from what I've heard it's not all it's hyped up to be.

If your character died, play as the new Orlesian Warden. If you must play as your dead Warden, then you're making that choice - BioWare is simply giving you the option. Say "thank you" and move along.
In the future, you really should at least try to understand what others are complaining about before you start lecturing them. And for the record, none of my characters have had an US ending so it doesn't effect me personally. I have however taken the time to understand why they're unhappy, and having done that, I have to concur with them that the US ending was mishandled from a game continuity/story consistency perspective. Perhaps game continuity & story consistency don't matter to you, but kindly respect the fact that there are many people to whom it does.
I think the main problem is people are arguing about two diffrent things.
One group takes the easy complaint and takes a cheap shot complaining about being able to play a warden which made the ultimate sacrfice. Which Bioware answered already if you don't care about fudging things we will pretend your character didn't die too. That is pretty fair and honnest.
The second group complains about how their actions don't port over with the Orlesian Warden. Fair enough I wish it would as well, but right now that isn't feesible. What is not fair however is saying it could easily be done. I am pretty sure none of us are in the industry making games of this level in any aspect. To say what it may easily or not easily be done isn't fair as I am positive nobody on this fourm has had a peek to see what would be involved (well barring the developers). They have done the best that they have done with the time, money, and other resources avilable to them. They do not owe us anything other then what we were given and in fact have gone far beyond what they owe us by chatting, explaining a few things now and again.

This is the impression I am getting as well Madcat, they are basically "divorcing" us right now..from the Origins story lines..thats why I had the impression they were "cutting us off at the knees" ..removing most familiar things and replacing with new.
I would say this would be an ongoing thing to move them AND us forward to I guess other stories they want to highlight and or portray. Still..doesn't mean the fans (me included) won't be disappointed by some of these decisions, I already am....but going to give it the benefit of the doubt. We'll see how Awakening plays out...but damn it all anyways the Ultimate Sacrifice was the coolest, most emotional ending I have ever experienced in a game, and they went and ...well did nothing with it.
I see that as a missed opportunity..one that I hope they don't overlook in the future for whatever game of theirs it might pop up in. Long as the continuity is there, ie: a reason for surviving death or a reason the torch is passed to a new person who takes over. Then there is no plot hole. I would be good with that.

This. 100x this.
It's maddening that my PC, the 5th GW to end a Blight, and everything she accomplished is just wiped from history to be replaced by (presumably) a male Cousland and whatever The Ministry of Truth decides to wrangle into the "correct" story. Way to respect her whole narrative and her US.
I shall have a wry smile on my face in Awakening when we get to this bit:
"Join us, Brothers and Sisters, join us in the Shadows where we stand
vigilant. Join us as we carry the duty that can not be forsaken, and
should you perish know that you're sacrifice shall not be forgotten and
that one day… We shall join you."
Yeh, right.

Wait. What? What does that mean, exactly? I've not read anywhere that there won't be a gender choice. If there is none, that would mean I can't ever play the game. I do not enjoy playing male PCs (not because I dislike men, but because I don't like playing a pixel man)

Yes, I was thinking this exact thing, but along the lines of what Wynne said. A good spirit can be summoned from the fade and returned to life. My question will be and will they answer this question in the expansion, who summoned me? Was it my love Alistair, Morrigan, maybe Wynne gave her life to revive me? Don't forget the elf ruin and the AW elf warrior that you release and return to the maker! Plus, what is the signal at the tower of Ishal?
So I don't understand why folks are getting all bent out of shape of being revived for Awakening for their dead warden character.
A Grey Warden who is now a Revenant!!!!! I would love that. So you think you can kick my butt in battle, we'll see! Bring it!

No, I don't mean you'll be forced to play a male Cousland or Orlaisian but if you want your US warden to stay dead, the backstory is written for you because they've said you can't import anything from your Origins save. In that case the character that died killing the 5th AD, that made the decisions at the Landsmeet, at Orzammar, with the Dalish, whom Oghren named his baby after, etc., etc., wont be you. I'm assuming that the history of Thedas will default to a male Cousland as the 5th GW, the iconic GW. The world as you left it after a US ending is wiped from memory and your Origins character never existed. As far as we've been told anyway.

Because Evalia..if you read this thread or even part of it..you'll get why.
Ultimate sacrifice portrays the warden doing his/her duty..or job. Wardens are taught that it is only themselves that can bring down an Archdemon for good. The way that is done is the two souls collide inside the Warden that deals the killing blow, thus the Warden dies along with the "immortal" archdemon.
If anyone else "kills" the Archdemon...that soul will just fly off into yet another darkspawn ..to recreate the Archdemon all over again.
So it IS the duty of each Grey Warden to attempt to bring the Archdemon down, if they are in the vicinity.
To all of a sudden just say" well we don't care if your Warden comes alive for some reason...thats up to you.
Thats fine for those who aren't roleplayers..or would rather play their dead warden.
It just leaves the rest of the folks who would like an indication..or some news, or a chat, or a cut-scene to carry the news to the Orlesian ..so that its evident to the Orlesian who he's taking over for and WHY.
But this is OLD news and OLD debate. Best way to get a good idea of the issues at hand, is to do some reading.
The Ultimate Sacrifice is the best...most heroic ending..to alot of folks, to just ignore it like it never happened, is very sad.
One of the reasons its being ignored is due to some "technical difficulty". It just surprises me that they wouldn't have attempted to remedy this ...because it really would have been something great.
Continuity..of the legacy type. Legacy import of your dead warden history....
Maybe some day that will happen.
