I would even accept it if you started a new character instead of importing one, since logically, the new character wouldn't have the equipment that the old character(s) had. Though it wouldn't surprise me to see a DLC for Awakenings that let you go back and re-recover the DLC gear - probably named something like "Return to Inventory", aka "Salt in the Wound".
Complete with Codex entries and Quest logs:
Item Codex entry #27: Helm of Honnleath. Here is the Helm of Honnleath, again. Fate has decreed that it should not be seperated from the head of the Gray Warden ever again. Fate has not decreed anything about the rest of the Gray Warden's body from the neck down, however.
Item Codex Entry #28 Cadish Stompers. These boots are made for walking. And that's just what they'll do. One of these days these boots are gonna walk right back to you!
Item Codex Entry #33: Marek's blade. From Marek to you in a DLC or two.
Also featured in this DLC: 2 new Acheivements.
1) In war, Victory. In Peace, Vigilence. In Case of DLC item theft: RECOVERY!
2) Loot re-snatcher (10 points)

While I know some fans are not happy with this, the main reason is, due to the advanced level of Awakening, the items you want to bring in would be rapidly less effective than the materials you start with or find early on in the game. Yes, in DA:O Starfang (or similar) are very powerful, but since you can reach level 30+ in Awakening, they would be ineffectual.
Trust me, there are heaps of cool new armors, weapons, spells, etc that you will want to use in Awakening that you will quickly learn to appreciate even more than your DLC items from DAO.

Though that fails to address the objection quite a few people have to removing items that held emotional attachment. The character can not hold on to duncans blades, the joining cup (my character didn't gift it to Alistair but kept it - for when she would rebuild the wardens, should she survive the blight) for example.
Dragon Age caters not only to power gamers and min maxers. There is a large fanbase that cares more about story and what items mean.
Just think of how many city elves have worn their wedding ring throughout the game. Imagine that was a DLC item and you told people "don't worry you'll get a better one".

Thanks Chris. The lack of DLC items in Awakening hasn't bothered me because I assumed what you've just stated (even more powerful equipment available soon after starting). Nonetheless, as such. wouldn't it just have been simpler to have the DLC stuff continue over and have the players dispose of it when they could? Was there some sort of coding issue that meant in order to import DLC the dev team had to put in far more work than was necessary as the equipment's usefulness would be overrided within a short time playing? If so, I can understand why Bioware decided against it. I'm just curious if this was a factor in the decision.

Would' ve liked to know before we actually bought RtO, but, oh well, you can't really rob people if you warn them in advance, right?
Edit: don't get me wrong, I appreciate that Chris showed up to address the matter. Still, don't expect a hug from me if this is the reason behind the decision.

I have to say, shouldn't that make importing them in to the game even *less* of an issue. I can see taking them out if the DLC items were comparable to the items you get in Awakening (because it would nullify all the content you've created.) Should we the players decide what items we do and do not want to discard, sell, or destroy of the items we've already obtained!?
It's hard to appreciate what was give if we cannot even hold/keep it in our Awakening inventory it in a sentimental
regard. I for one, keep all special/uniques I've ever collect and don't use in my chest in Warden's Keep. I do not sell them.

I would trust this. I'm sad that Duncans dagger must be left behind, but Chris is trustworthy.

But not one of them will be the sword with which I slew the ArchDemon.... that sword aparently never existed...
I expect this will be immediately fixed PC side by a mod, sucks for the console players though.

Wow. That's the reason? Because there's more powerful gear in the expansion? Might as well start the character naked then. *shrug*
It's better to just leave the items in, and let the player decide what items to use. This seems like a weak excuse, but k, whatever.

Not become a flamer, a hater, or whatever but I feel this must be said.
How can you blindly trust someone who is making a bad decision? From a game design perspective, this will make the warden naked in some people's cases or severly underwhelmed (needing to scrounge for lets say tier 4 gear.) From a business perspective, this makes DLC less worthwhile. Yes, items are not the total draw, but for some it is. If the items are not comparable to the loot you will get, then there *should not* be an issue to have them come with you. From a flavor point of view, this breaks the 4th wall. What happened to your gear? Was it stolen? Why am I suddenly naked? It is part of the uproar some people felt when they announce the "hand-holding" reviving a dead warden would do.
