At the times I think Bioware forgot to balance that gun out and make it a usefull complement to other guns you get.

Yeah, SMG is the best at stripping shields and barriers.....
But Soldiers don't get SMGs. As far as I can tell, a Geth Pulse Rifle with Heavy Disruptor Ammo is the fastest way for a soldier to drop shields without using companions. Shotguns may be faster, but who wants to get close enough for them to be effective on Hardcore or Insanity? Certainly not me.
