I bought a new Dell Studio XPS 8100 and bought ME1 via Steam. ME1 will not launch at all and the below error shows up in the Application Event Log. I wanted to get ME2 but thought I should check out ME1 first. If I can't get ME1 working then I'm sure not going to buy ME2. Please help!

As far as I know, a 310 isn't a Mainline gaming card. You need to look it up, maybe on the Toms hardware VGA Charts, to see where it fits in. Maybe you missed the announcements, but the XPS series is no longer specifically a gaming line of PCs.

Same problem here, equivalent report data:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: MassEffect.exe
Application Version: 1.2.20608.0
Application Timestamp: 4a55fea1
Fault Module Name: MassEffect.exe
Fault Module Version: 1.2.20608.0
Fault Module Timestamp: 4a55fea1

OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1043

On my previous installation of Windows (Win7 prerelease, build 7127 or something, 64-bit), ME1 worked like a charm. Perhaps the upgrade to a proper release of Windows 7 x64 broke something.
  • OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
  • CPU: AMD Opteron 1214
  • RAM: 2 GB
  • VIDEO: AMD Radeon HD4850
  • AUDIO: some onboard realtek crap
  • DirectX: 11
-edit- according to the Steam Powered fora, replacing the OpenAL drivers should fix this.
-edit2- never mind, it's UAC:
"""WINDOWS VISTA OR WINDOWS 7 USERS: Launching “Mass Effect” from Steam
requires the setting “Run as Administrator”. If the User Account Control
feature of Windows Vista is enabled, launching “Mass Effect” from Steam
will result in failure. For users with User Account Control enabled,
launch Steam using the “Run as Administrator” option or launch from the
windows shortcut."""

Two months or so ago, when ME2 was about to release, Bioware closed down the ME1 forums on their "Legacy" site, and for a short time, had a Tech forum covering both ME1 and ME2. That is no longer the case. ME1 questions belong in the ME1 Tech Discussions Forum, which is now combined with the Xbox360 tech forum.
