You pick up Flamestorm from Zaeed's mission. The other 2 are from researching ammo capacity.

The firestorm is pretty much like a short range particle beam that can affect more than one target at a time. Its actually very effective on insanity. I used it to survive all the varren on the Quarian rescue mission. It would probably be damn near impossible to win that if not for the flamethrower.

I actually found that the Cain wasn't even useful on insanity. Like I'd see two YMIRs and say "do I really have to do this?" and then fire the Cain and see that it only took down their health 50%

I never bring the Particle Beam Cannon because it doesn't match my uniform... I'm totally serious too.

I mostly tossed the varren around with Pull and Shockwave and let the rest of the squad focus on actually killing them.

All of this post is my experience with the heavies on insanity.

The cryo gun does very nice damage to defenses, and it fires very quickly. The fact that it freezes undefeneded targets is just icing on the cake. Pun intended.

The blackstorm gun is amazing on insanity because when it explodes it does massive damage to defenses. (I used it a lot on the SM on my infiltrator, and it completely stripped every low level target in an area and almost killed harbinger outright!)

The particle beam is my go-to weapon. It cuts through defenses very quickly and is great for an adept that wants to toss people around. It's got a lot of ammo and you can use it for this quite often. It kind of sucks for bosses and scions though, it takes ages and almost all your ammo to even kill one boss/sub boss.

The flamethrower is nice but limited by range. This means it's a vanguard's best friend for obvious reasons.

The cain is weak on insanity. It does about 1/2 to 1/3 the damage that I'd say it's weaknesses entitle it to. (The huge ammo cost, the horrible charge time, the danger of gibbing yourself.) I used it twice against the final boss, and it seemed to do about 1/8th of the bosses total health. I fired it twice and still needed to shoot him up for quite a while. It takes 2+ shots to kill a ymir mech. No thank you.

The grenade launcher and missle launcher: They don't seem to do enough damage to make up for not having a lot of ammo. I guess they're okay for what they are though.

I was able to beat the Quarian rescue mission with Grunt's/Miranda's firepower/powers and sniping with the Widow. Granted it took a few attempts, but finally got it.

The only time I used HW on insanity was the Cain on the Human Reaper. Was nice to start with it at 1/2 life. The Collector Beam is nice to, because it does stun your enemies. But on the higher difficulties the only time the stun effect is really helpful is against lone Scions to stop their shockwaves.

It doesn't match my guns so I don't use it. I use flamethrower and grenade launcher because i like the way they look. Seriously.

I kinda liked the way it looked.... it matches my gear better than other choices (the Tempest, Scimitar and Viper all look like they've been made by the same company)

Cain doesn't seem to work for me. maybe it's my system (64 bit OS), but I get NOTHING out of Cain. Collector Particle Cannon is my absolute fav for knocking down armor. Plus, it does smack lesser enemies down like a mac truck on steroids. Grenade Launcher is good for taking out massed groups of loki mechs.

Cain needs to have 100% ammo or higher, then you need to charge it for a few seconds by holding down fire.

they serve their purpose. there not suppose to be main weapons, they have limited ammo. if there was more ammo or they were more powerfull, you wouldnt need to use any other weapon.

Not really, the only good heavy weapons are the Cain or the Particle Beam the rest are pretty poor.

I expect if you are going to call a weapon a "Heavy Weapon" that you should be able to cause some damage but really your main weapons do much more damage per second than your heavy weapons ever could (with the exeption of the Cain and Particle Beam).

For instance the Widow sniper Rifle does so much more damage with one shot than the missle launcher can do with 5.

I liked the Cain, mainly because it's all manner of fun to blow things up in a giant mushroom cloud. And the epic final mission just gets that much more epic when you blow the sh*t out of the giant human Reaper with a nuke launcher. Aside from that...I pretty much use heavy weapons as kind of a gimmick. An "only when I feel like making things go boom" kind of thing.

I mostly just use the flamethrower and the particle beam. They seem to just tear through shields/barriers/armour like it's not even there. They're not great against health, but I'd much rather be using my powers to finish them off, much more satisfying.

The particle beam combined with Assassination cloak is sickeningly awesome.

I actually played Insanity without firing a shot of Heavy Weapon because I wasn't going to have enough paragon points to maintain both Jack and Miranda's loyalty. So I used the +10% heavy ammo leg armor with a 6/6 ammo upgraded Cain. I never used it, but never put it down, so I always had 200% ammo. Killed the Human Reaper in under a minute so Miranda didn't kick the bucket from disloyalty issues. But yeah, unless you're trying to bullrush the Human Reaper, the Cain is limited in use.

The only areas in the game that warrant the use of a Cain:

1. Derelict Reaper Core (can kill it before it closes if you're quick enough and skip the entire fight)

2. Final platform before the Human Reaper (two scions and three aboms instantly eliminated)

3. The Human Reaper

4. Anything you really, REALLY want to see die in a fiery explosion.

I personally only use two in Insanity as an Adept. Grenade Launcher and later on Cain, mainly because there are rare situations where you need to burst down one really tough cookie real quick or you're screwed.

I had a "trying to be funny" moment. I was in the Samara recruitment quest. There was this part where you have to face off a gunship...it was flying about in BIG open space, really nothing blocking it. So after warp and a few shots off rifles and shotguns, it pulled back and was making a comeback soon. I pulled out the Cain, charge up...and followed the gunship. Just nice it was flying straight to me. The Cain fired off...the gunship never had a chance to fly to the other side. LOL. I loaded a previous save obviously.
Back to topic. Other than Cain, the most I used was the avalanche and missle launcher. I hated the avalanche's arc when firing...but the freeze effect was good, it was area. Missile launcher was decent enough...but I couldn't rely on it much due to the low damage. Cain was then basically for every other thing that couldn't be made Popsicle...
