Zevran Arainai betrays you later in the game when he sees a fellow assassin, i was wonder what approval rating must you have for Zevran to keep him from leaving your party in Denerim. If it's not possibly to win him over, then what is the point?

I want to use him as a two weapon swordsman/tank/lock picker so i do want to try and use him, but i'm at the 1st encounter scene right now waiting to see what i should do. Is it worth having him in your party, that being you have to raise his approval very high to keep him; or is it better to just kill him and use the opportunity to raise approvals of other party memebers??

He always betrays me so I'm not sure.  Although I never use him or try to get him to like me.

It is possible to have him stay with you if his approval is high enough. It requires a fair number of the gold and silver bar gifts, but in the fellow assassin encounter, he will say that he is loyal to you and fight by your side (to the end of the game if you like).

I've never had him betray me, I only give him ~1-4 gifts (1-2 bars + maybe the gloves or boots) but I usually talk to him a couple times in camp, basically just clicking through the conversations quickly. Never use him in my party though.

There are three possible outcomes of the Talisen encounter:

Zevran betrays you: This only happens if you have low approval. Since it happened with you, I'm guessing you never spoke much to him. Zev's approval is easy to get high fairly quickly. By the end of the game, I usually have 2 or 3 bars of gold or silver still in inventory because they weren't needed. Just speak to him. Very few responses you can give will net you negative approval. Plus, he has a lot to say and he's lived a very interesting life.

Zevran stays neutral: If his approval is in the middle range, than he won't betray you, but he won't betray Talisen, either. He has something of a history with Talisen, after all, which you'll know if you speak to Zevran about it.

Zevran fights for you: You must have moderate to high approval for this. If he's a good friend or if you've romanced him, he'll choose you over Talisen in his final rejection of the life he lived before. It's not a hard one to get, and it's actually quite touching.

Zevran is a pretty interesting character. He's life has been very tragic in many respects, and its only through his bond with the Warden that he'll be able to move past it. If you put no effort into the friendship or romance, though, than he'll feel rejected and choose the old devil over the new one.

Thanks, yes you're right. My first time around i didn't use him/or talk to him much.

Alright then, i'll have nothing to worry about just as long as i pay attention to him this time around.

Actually, I had the same opinion as most players - why use him?

Then, I did use him as a third DPS and was surprised that he was so successful. The baddies tend to ignore him and go after my PC and tank who are usually in massive armor. Zevran with dual daggers goes around back-stabbing everything in sight with impunity. I've seen him take down Ogre Alpha's by himself because the thing ignored him being too busy lobbing boulders at my PC. Build Zevran up every level: 2 Dex + 1 Cun and he becomes a killing machine behind the scenes.

But back to the original topic, yeah, all you need to give him is 2 or 3 items and a little flirting. Let him look at your **** (ahem - backside) - it doesn't cost you anything.

Zevran is a regular party member in my group. He is the most vocal when taken on quests and most of the time I find his counsel sound. I love his stealth capabilities and he's sort of a protector to my PCs. Friend or lover, he's invaluable to me. Give him the gloves, boots, silver/gold bars and just chat with him a little - I find his converstations with my PCs the most intriguing.

I set out to romance Zevran with my Dalish warrior (who's also my avatar) and was surprised at how easy it was to get his approval up. I gave him the Dalish gloves, Antivan leather boots (Haven), a small silver bar I found in the Circle Tower (iirc) and another silver(?) bar I found in Haven. Then, I just spoke to him in camp every time I had the chance. It wasn't long before he was tsking about how tired and worried I looked and offering a massage. Then, one thing led to another and...well, you know how it goes.  :P

I was surprised at how effective a fighter he is and what a charming companion he can be.  Well, he can be charming when he's not teasing Wynne about her magical bosom or offering Alistair performance tips.  Then, I just have to sit back and laugh at him although he does have a point when he asks Alistair, "How are you Fereldens ever going to learn how to pleasure each other if you don't talk about it?".

I just LOVE Zevran. I chat him up right away and you get major approval pretty quick. I haven't given him the boots yet and he's already at 100% adore. He's a killing machine! He moves around whacking everyone. I love putting the venom on his blades. It makes he even more lethal. Works great. He's my favorite character. His comments are very funny.

I think an approval rating of 40+ will be enough for him not to betray you.

You don't even need to romance him or give him gifts, just talk to him and don't be utterly rude and his approval will soar. Tell him you want him with you. Treat him like a person, not a slave, and it won't be an issue. The Dalish gloves and Antivan boots alone will get you enough approval for him not to betray you even without talking to him much; and if you select the line during the encounter of "Zevran belongs with me now." he will stand by you even if your approval isn't quite high enough. (I've never tried it with him hostile, but it's pretty hard to get him to hostile and keep him there unless you are ridiculously nasty to him.) He makes a terrible tank, but as DPS he is amazing and he doesn't take much damage if you level him properly (high dex + high cun + lethality). As a bonus, he gives some of the best advice in the game if you have him in your party.

Edit: typos

For a friend, he will stay and fight with you at Warm. This should be pretty easy to get. Once you get a dialogue where he is asking you what you plan to do with him when your Grey Warden business is done, you know you're already "in the zone." That should happen really early if you're paying him any attention at all.

If his romance has been turned on, he'll need to be at higher approval to stay and fight with you- above 70. Otherwise he says some pretty touching things to Taliesen and the other Crows and then leaves the fight. You can talk to him back at camp and he'll talk more about Taliesen. In a romance, I find that I have to actually try to keep his approval this low, however. He gives very high bumps for flirting, and +1 each time you go to the tent.

Zevran seems at first to be a shallow assassin, ready to betray you (like Hoshino in BG2) but if you talk to him and give him the gift's you should have picked up by the time you do any serious travel in Denerem, he ends up as quite the party member. In the end game he's the most loyal of all.

Since my second playthrough Zevran is the only companion that is always in my party. He has the most character development of all the companions & is both far more complex and quite different to the first impression you get of him. As long as you give him the gloves and boots, and talk to him, the other gifts aren't needed to get his approval up. Approval rises faster if you romance him but the downside to fast approval is that you miss some of this dialogue if you get to "Adore" too quickly.

i think bioware made zevran like yoshimo from bg2 except hes his reincartion that has the chance of not betraying you. so you get to see the fate of your comrade who is quite funny

he will stay if you are over 26 there is a conversation at that point where he says something like "I know this quest you are on is good and all.... " He wants to know what will happen to him after the fighting is over with. I usually tell him that I can always use a friend (unless I'm romancing him then I say "after I ravish you" ). you have to have this conversation to make the friendship stick. You can't just pump him up with gifts and never talk to him. (This is the same with every companion not just Zev) This is also the reason so many people have problems getting Leliana's side quest. the pump up the friendship with gifts and don't take the time to talk to them as the "score" is rising.

The best way to know when the friendship changes is when you get the bonus skill (I think for Zev it's dex, but I might be wrong on that)
