In the end, Mass Effect is an RPG. It has a decent story and very good gameplay.
The characters need to be deep and interesting sure but if the community goes on too much about romance sub-plots, there will be a price. The price will be paid by the other elements of the game and the characters we like so much will be too love-sim orientated.
It annoyed me enough already that this has caused such things as Garrus being actually fairly boring if you AREN'T femshep and romancing him. That shoudn't happen!
Getting ridiculous! Sure Tali is a good character but 19000 replies by people who probably masturbate over her helmet all calling for a huge Tali romance in ME3? If that happens, the aforementioned price will be high in terms of losing out in other areas. Even as i write this I think my mere non pro-Tali stance will result in me being flamed by the legion of 15 year old Tali-Obsessives when I am raising a highly important issue.
I don't want Mass Effect to be ruined because people want in-game sex so much.
Must be some people noticing this disturbing trend ;s

Garrus isn't as boring as he was in ME1.. your argument is flawed good sir.

failed comparison but you are correct in the first statement. compare him to a truly deep and well developed character like Alistair or Morrigan in DA.

Failed comparison how? Garrus was ridiculously dry in ME1, he has character in ME2 even if you don't romance him as a femshep... And with how many squadmates there are, it's reasonable for none to be as well developed as DA:O... Which was done by a different Bioware team BTW.

you took the wrong meaning of failed comparison.
i did say you were CORRECT IN THE ASSERTION THAT GARRUS WAS BORING in ME1. Or i at least implied it. He is better in ME2. I agree with you omg.
I know it was a different team, doesnt mean i cant compare them.
My problem isnt with garrus! its with the fact that you miss a ****load of garrus content if you do not romance him. There should be a replacement for this.

Way to generalize. You placed that on yourself.

Don't support romances? Don't post your support in a romance thread. Simple.

QFT.  People consider the romantic aspect a fundemental part of the RPG experience.  After all, you grow attached to these characters as you watch them develop and grow, and a romantic connection is part of that attachment.  I love how people generalize and consider the LI part as a "dating-sim".  It's called character development!  It's part of Shepard's story, you decide how close she gets to her teammates.  If you don't like it, then when you play, don't romance anyone.  But it's silly to make an entire thread making a rather ergegious hasty generalization about Bioware's fanbase.

Yes, I am claiming this is an RPG, because it contains the qualities of an rpg.. It's certainly combat oriented, but it's still an RPG.. BTW it's a third person shooter, learn the difference ;)

you missed the point as well. like the guy you quoted.
for the last time, hopefully, I SUPPORT THE ROMANCES.
I am simply worried they will be taken too far due to ridiculously overproportional praise in relation to other aspects of Mass Effect 2 more worthy of said praise RESULTING IN MASS EFFECT 3 BEING TOO MUCH LOVE-SIM.

You're always going to miss intimate things with people, when you aren't intimate with them... That's as true in games as it is in real life. If your complaint is simply lack of extensive dialog, say that; but blaming the lack on romance options isn't the same thing.

Love interests help people become emotionally invested in the game and its story, thereby increasing immersion.

Since there is absolutely no chance of love interests being increased to the point where they require an investment of time and money such that it is detrimental to the rest of the game, I don't really see what you're complaining about here.

ME3 won't suddenly turn into a dating sim consisting mostly of LI dialogue and sex scenes. It just won't. The developers aren't idiots, so it won't happen.

Well, I don't care about romances in this game. Much less for in-game sex scenes.
Then again, I don't consider its story that decent. Actually, it full of cliches. Then again, that applies to almost all Bioware games, so I didn't expect anything else from their writers.
Gameplay is good, however. But it is presentation is makes ME a remarkable game. In fact, it excels as an interactive movie, and not so much as anything else.

I really hate the "cliched story" argument. Every story ever has ripped off of something else at some point and time.

Haha.

'William was deeply humiliated. I tried to comfort him; I told him that for three days he had been looking for a text in Greek and it was natural in the course of his examination for him to discard all books not in Greek. And he answered that it is certainly human to make mistakes, but there are some human beings who make more than others, and they are called fools, and he was one of them...'

Umberto Eco, The Name of the Rose.

What I mean is, stories do tend to have cliches, no doubt. However, some stories have more cliches than others. Some - much more. And some nearly exclusively consist of cliches - they are called Bioware stories. ;)

I get what you're saying. I disagree. I'd like to see more realistic integration of the romances in ME3. Not necessarily a "Love-Sim," but for the LI and NPC's to at least reflect the change in relationship status. In ME2, it's rather jarring how the LI goes back to pre-Omega 4 relay dialogue after you've consummated the relationship. It would be nice to see a little more continuity.

In ME3, I'd like to see a greater integration of relationships in the game. I want there to be inter-squad dynamics, I want the LI and romance-status to somehow be incorporated in the game. For example, LI's use slightly different dialogue when speaking with the PC during scenes than they would if you were just friends.

Conversely, I'd love it if there were viable paths of interacting on different relationship levels, not just as lovers. People should be able to take a "friendship" path or a "detached but professional" path, or even an "enemies/rival" path and have that NPC interactions and dialogue change slightly to reflect this.

In short: My desire is for a more realistic incorporation and reflection of the player's status with NPC's (and LI's in particular). I thought DA:O did a fabulous job of going in the right direction, and I sincerely hope ME3 reflects a progression over that game (granted they are made by two different teams). No, romances shouldn't be the core focus, but relationships ARE hallmarks of BW games, and I just want to see them take the next step.

I think its because romance pretty much are in a way the deepest more meaningful relationship you can have with your squadmate

However DA:O and ME2 managed to better convay more diverse relationship without it being romantic

I enjoy the romances and want them to stay there but you guys missed the OP's point. Developing a game is about ressources (people and money) and time. We may have had an even better general story or better gameplay or bigger areas to explore if the ressources used on romances were put somewhere else.

All the writing, programming, animations, recordings, for romances uses a big chunk of ressources.

NPCs far deeper in DAO. This was great.
Romances are also a good thing. There are many who seemingly want them to be the "core focus" and this is what i am afraid of.
But what you mention will take unbelieveable amounts of work and budget. Not sure its worth it compared to alternatives.

One could make the same argument about any aspect of the game... Everyone surely has at least one minor complaint; but the choice isn't ours on what Bioware should focus on. it was theirs, they decided they wanted to continue doing the relationships they had done in other game. Complaining about it does nothing but give other people a headache. <_<

WOW SOMEONE GETS IT.
Yes. Things are about money and development time/cost.
The insanity surrounding obsessive-romance/sex-lust on these forums make me afraid as to what Bioware will do.
The 19000 page tali-obsessive thread WILL have an effect on ME3's development. I do not want it to be a detrimental one.
ME2 was fantastic and is one of my favourite games ever with a good balance here. But I do not want ME3 turning into some love-sim.

If romance is the only way you remember how to get immersion with a character then I'm afraid you failed.

Imagine for once that Shepard would like to develop a friendship instead of a romance, obviously there's only so much effort a Dev can put into the game, it will always be limited and sometimes something doesn't make the cut. Therefore it's very important to keep the overall interaction between squadmates very well balanced. We can't only demand romances, and with that in mind I support some of the pointviews mentioned by the OP.

We should first of all wish a very good main plot with a very good balance between the type of interaction between squadmates (and squadmates between themselves since that didn't happened in ME2 too often).

This is not a complaint about explicitness or nudity (I laughed a lot at Miranda "riding" Shepherd fully clothed), but about the loss of other content due to fans wanting more sex.
Must be some people noticing this disturbing trend ;s

I'm sorry but all I see is assumption after assumption. Romance in the game is a very small fraction of the rest of it. If people like that part of game, doesn't make em any less of a person. Hell, do you know these "19000 repliers"? I can tell you that I do enjoy the tali romance because it's well written, while not expressing as some people on the forums do. And my girlfriend enjoys...jacob....but so what? It's a damn game, meant for entertainment. If enjoying part of the game is wrong, then hey...keep it to yourself. Nobody needs to hear how you ASSUME everyone masterbates to some pixels. Oh yeah, and we're all supposedly 15, cool story bro.

And before you going giving bioware **** about sex scenes & whatnot they have the tamest of just about any game with them in it. If thats the art direction they decided to choose, I have no problem with it. If you want to see some naked pixels, God of war & Heavy Rain this way >>>>>>>>>>>>>

Should think before you talk, I'm not flaming you because anything in the game, just annoyed that you drop all these assumptions, when in reality you know very little about the people on the forums. Bioware isn't stupid, just like both mass effects, romance will be playing a small part in the next. Just because fans enjoy it alot doesnt mean they are going to just drop everything & turn this into some kind of love sim.
